Jerrod Carmichael’s Next Directorial Lucky Girl Explores Broken Justice System

Jerrod Carmichael is all set to direct a new feature film titled ‘Lucky Girl.’ The project is scheduled to commence filming in North Carolina in the fall of 2023. The film follows a woman named Gwen, whose husband is put behind bars by a racist judge for a robbery he did not commit.

Gwen sets out on a journey to find the man who actually committed the crime and comes across Orson Hayes, a black man who also faced similar treatment from the broken system and now feels justified to do anything that helps him make ends meet. Instead of reporting Orson to the authorities, Gwen blackmails him into assisting her in a plan to rob a wealthy and dysfunctional family she once worked as a nanny for in a gated community.

Despite having a production plan in place, the filming may only start after the conclusion of the SAG-AFTRA strike despite receiving a waiver from the union to proceed with the casting for the film. North Carolina, where the shoot is planned to begin, has a diverse range of landscapes from beautiful beaches to picturesque mountains, which makes it an ideal location for the production of a variety of projects. The state has earlier hosted the filming of several films and television shows, including ‘Murder on the Orient Express,’ ‘The Hunger Games,’ ‘The Conjuring,’ ‘The Green Mile,’ ‘One Tree Hill,’ and ‘Eastbound & Down.’

Carmichael is helming the project based on a script by Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch. He previously directed the 2021 black comedy film ‘On the Count of Three,’ in which he also stars alongside Christopher Abbott. The comedian and filmmaker also worked in the TV specials ‘Lil Rel Howery: Live in Crenshaw’ and ‘Drew Michael: Red Blue Green.’ Carmichael’s acting credits include the NBC sitcom ‘The Carmichael Show,’ and the films ‘Transformers: The Last Knight,’ ‘Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising,’ and ‘The Meddler.’

Katcher and Welch previously collaborated with Carmichael on ‘On the Count of Three.’ The duo also co-created the Hulu comedy-drama ‘Ramy.’ Katcher created ‘The Carmichael Show’ as well, along with Carmichael, Willie Hunter, and Nicholas Stoller. The casting details of ‘Lucky Girl’ have not been disclosed as of now. The film is produced by Katcher, David Carrico, and Adam Paulsen. Carrico and Paulsen earlier produced the 2021 mystery drama ‘Pig,’ starring Nicolas Cage. They also co-produced ‘On the Count of Three’ and served as executive producers of the 2021 documentary ‘A Glitch in the Matrix.’
