The first season of Paramount+’s Western series ‘1923’ ends with Spencer and Alexandra “Alex” Dutton’s efforts to remain together as a couple. With the latter’s family and ex-fiancé after them, they rely on several ways to stay united, leading them to a ghost ship and physical attacks. Meanwhile, Alex grows ill, which makes her throw up during this period. Even though it can be easily explained as the result of seasickness, the couple has been highly intimate without any precaution, even when their lives are on the line. The second season premiere touches upon the reason behind Alex’s unexpected seasickness and what it means for the two lovebirds! SPOILERS AHEAD.
Alexandra “Alex” Dutton is Pregnant With Spencer’s Baby
The first episode of the second season of ‘1923’ clarifies the mystery behind Alex’s seasickness and deteriorating health. The Englishwoman reveals to her best friend, Jennifer, that she is indeed pregnant with Spencer’s child, which creates a sense of urgency as far as their potential reunion is concerned. Since she cannot be with her family when her belly reveals her secret to the whole world, she decides to leave for Montana, even if it means traveling with a second-class ticket with thieves and scoundrels. Alex relies on Jennifer to sell her jewelry and boards a ship to the United States to reconnect with the father of her unborn child.
Even though the revelation concerning Alex’s pregnancy is one of the major highlights of the second season premiere, it may not be a surprise for all the viewers. Julia Schlaepfer, who plays the Englishwoman, has previously teased the pregnancy to TVLine by stating that she “even found out what [Alex’s] sickness [was] from.” Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer, also joined the actress to explain what Alex’s potential pregnancy means to his character.
Sklenar said that such a development would be a “hopeful moment” amid several life-threatening challenges. “[Alex’s pregnancy] would motivate him [Spencer], you know? He’s really on a path of wanting to have a life with her and have her at the ranch, and he definitely has to have children one day—because he has [a] purpose, and he has something to live for, and he’s just really hooked into that purpose, you know?” the actor said in the same TVLine interview. “So, anything that would further fuel that, I think he’d be fully accepting and embracing of it,” Sklenar added.
While Alex is pregnant, the development is outrightly a plot point created to aid Spencer and his wife’s storyline. The pregnancy was not integrated into the narrative of the Western drama because of any connection with reality. As of now, Schlaepfer has not said anything at all about being pregnant in real life. Furthermore, Alex’s pregnancy can be seen as a much-needed plot development to unravel a mystery in the Dutton family tree.
Alexandra “Alex” Dutton’s Pregnancy May Explain the Mystery Behind John Dutton II’s Parents
John Dutton II is the father of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III, the protagonist of the mothership series ‘Yellowstone.’ Ever since the premiere of ‘1923,’ the ardent admirers of the franchise have had difficulty explaining how the celebrated character is connected to his ancestors. When the prequel series began airing, Jack and Elizabeth Dutton were initially considered to be John Dutton II’s parents. However, following a miscarriage, the series hints that Elizabeth may not be able to give birth to a baby. Since the only other surviving couple who can conceive the next generation of the Duttons are Spencer and Alex, they can be John Dutton II’s actual father and mother.
Even if Spencer and Alex are John Dutton II’s biological parents, the couple who looks after him can be Jack and Elizabeth, just like how Jacob and Cara Dutton care for the children of James Dillard Dutton and Margaret Dutton. Since the war veteran is expected to lead the war against Donald Whitfield to save the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, his life is concerningly on the line. When he is facing the enemy, his fierce better half may not be able to stop herself from joining the love of her life. Therefore, they necessarily may not be the ones who ensure the well-being of their child.
