Helmed by Wes Miller, ‘A Day to Die’ builds up to a single, 12-hour window where several characters clash and collide until nothing but chaos remains. Connor Connolly, a parole officer still traumatized by a past incident, gets trapped in a political conspiracy when his actions pit him against a drug kingpin, Tyrone Pettis. The latter goes as far as to abduct Connor’s wife and demand an absurd ransom, which can only be paid off by pulling off a string of heists, each more difficult than the previous. Forced to get his hands dirty, Connor reunites with some of his oldest allies to do the impossible, but soon realizes that the shadowy powers at the top might not be that unfamiliar after all. At the end of this heist thriller movie, Connor and his team reach a crossroads of their own making, where every choice decides whether they live or die. SPOILERS AHEAD.
A Day to Die Plot Synopsis
‘A Day to Die’ begins with the hijacking of a school on Brownsville Road, which brings the entire city under national spotlight. Given that the hijackers are armed to the teeth, the mayor and the sheriff decide to greenlight a special ops team known as the “ghost squad.” This team, led by officers Detective Brice Mason and Officer Connor Connolly, makes it through several layers of barricading and quickly begins neutralizing the assailants one after another. However, an unanticipated explosion throws everything into chaos, triggering civilian casualties. In the process, both Connor and his brother, Tim, are left traumatized, which leads them to quit the force. Years later, Connor, who is now a parole officer, finds himself in fresh trouble after accidentally killing a gang enforcer on duty.
The gang, led by a drug kingpin named Tyrone Pettis, declares Connor an enemy and begins a systematic plan to strip him of all power and dignity. This starts with the death of the prisoner on parole whom Connor was defending, following which he is suspected of foul play and fired from the force. Not long after, Pettis kidnaps Connor’s pregnant wife, Candice, and demands 2 million dollars as ransom. Knowing that Connor doesn’t have that much money at his disposal, Pettis twists the knife by forcing him to conduct a series of heists, all within a 12-hour window. To do this, Connor ends up taking the help of his brother, Tim, who has long since abandoned the force and is battling with drug addiction.
As the team begins pulling off one heist after another, their activity draws the attention of Mason, who is still in the force but has become increasingly suspicious of Sheriff Alston. Before long, Mason’s paths cross with those of Connor and Tim, and they decide to strike a deal. However, this is undercut by Pettis’ revelation that it was Tim who helped the gang pull off Candice’s kidnapping, on the condition that she lives. Though Connor feels betrayed, he has no choice but to put feelings aside, as not long after he reunites with his wife, it is revealed that Alston is indeed the mastermind behind all of these shenanigans. To beat him for good, Pettis suggests an alliance between him, Mason, and Connor’s family, with everything resting on one final heist and a single plane ride that can take them out of the country. However, when Alston learns of these plans, he launches an all-out attack of his own, forcing Pettis and his team into a corner in no time.
A Day to Die Ending: Do Connor and Candice Make Their Escape?
‘A Day to Die’ ends with Connor and Candice joining Pettis on his escape trip to Mexico. While Connor and the drug kingpin start the movie as sworn enemies, by the end their dynamic does a full 180, in no small part due to their common enemy: Alston. When it becomes clear that Alston intends to play both sides and emerge as the sole winner, Pettis decides to abandon their long-term partnership and instead joins hands with Connor. Together, they set out for a plan that simultaneously funnels their money and themselves to a safe location. Ultimately, it is Candice who chips in with the most important revelation about how her cousin is a forgery expert and can get them fake identities with little trouble. This goes in sync with Pettis’ larger heist plan, all to retire early.
Although Pettis’ manipulative tactics throughout the movie make his plans feel suspicious at first, he openly admits to merely playing by the rules of the criminal environment he was born in, one manufactured by the likes of Alston. Instead of serving only himself, however, Pettis dedicates much of his resources to his community, which is something that ties into the ending. By accepting Connor, Candice, Mason, and the others as his teammates, he essentially recognizes them as a part of his larger family, which in turn makes his word bulletproof. The same, however, cannot be said about his plan to steal millions from the bank, as from the get-go, he is intercepted by Alston and his police team.
In a twisted recollection of the movie’s opening scene, Connor’s final fight with Alston results in several casualties on both sides. With Wayne, Puth, and several others meeting their end, in the end, only Pettis, Connor, and Candice manage to board the plane. From there, the scene cuts to a one-year timeskip, which is effectively a confirmation of the trio escaping the police’s radar for good. With millions in their possession, the trio doesn’t exactly rest down, either, as the bulk of that money is then reinvested into the community, as we see in the movie’s final moments. While Connor and Candice may have bid violence goodbye for now, they do not forget who helped them on this path, and how, and that’s precisely what makes them worthy in Pettis’ eye.
Why Does Mason Sacrifice Himself?
Connor, Candice, and Pettis’ escape from Alston is only made possible by the last-minute intervention of Mason, who places himself between the plane and the police with no regard for his life. Though he is a part of Pettis’ escape plan from the very start, his mind changes when it becomes clear that the crew cannot outrun the police. If Alston gets his hands on the cash, not only does Mason’s family have no way of sustaining itself, but the sacrifices of his teammates also lose meaning. In light of that, Mason decides to stay back and hold the police force long enough for Pettis and the remaining teammates to board the plane and escape. Though Mason loses his life relatively quickly in the ensuing gunfire exchange, the plan ultimately works, and Alston is left with nothing.
Mason’s decision to sacrifice himself comes with yet another layer, as it is also about him losing hope in life. In his final moments, he reveals to Connor that his son is in a state of brain death, with doctors confirming that he will never wake up. With this in mind, Mason believes that even if he returns to his family a millionaire, it won’t matter much. Instead, he decides to take the fall and let the others live, especially as they have a lot left in life to look forward to. This also marks a passing-of-the-torch moment, as Connor and Candice are about to become parents themselves. In a way, Mason believes that his death is perhaps the only way he can truly reunite with his son in the afterlife, and that brings him closure in his dying breath.
In the aftermath of Mason’s death, Connor, Candice, and Pettis decide to honor him by sending a chunk of the money to his wife. While the doctors aren’t able to bring his son back to life, the money ensures that Mason’s wife and the rest of his family will have a stable life. As one of the few characters in the story who don’t start out from a place of coercion, Mason functions as a pillar of agency in the narrative, and nothing brings out that quality in him more than the ending, where he sacrifices his life for the greater good. This is also in no small part due to his enemity with Alston, and it is possible that he believes his final act to be his ultimate triumph against the man who has been ruining the system from the inside out.
Is Alston Arrested? Does the Truth About Him Come Out?
Following the escape of Pettis and his team, Alston is forced to suspend his criminal enterprises, but it doesn’t take the police long to figure out his role in all of it. In a twist, we learn that someone filmed him killing his fellow officer, who was almost onto the truth about his involvement in the drug ring. Once the video of that conversation and murder reaches the police, it doesn’t take long for Alston to go behind bars. In an indirect advantage, this is also most likely the final nail in the coffin for the Pettis investigation, as no one seems to be as invested in searching for him as Alston. With the truth now out, everyone understands the power dynamics that were actually in play, which essentially means that the burden originally held by Pettis and Connor is now handed over to Alston.
While we don’t know what happens to Alston following the arrest, it is likely that he is in prison for good, with his entire criminal empire in ruins already. The fact that Pettis manages to heist all of the money and escape is the final, thumping victory in Alston’s face, as he is left with neither the wealth of his exploit nor the respect and power he once commanded as the sheriff. A key detail in the final sequence appears to be the moment when he sees the leaked video for himself. Knowing what’s to come, he takes his gun out of his holster, seemingly to attempt suicide, only for the police officers to step in at that moment. Instead of taking his own life, Alston finds himself on trial and being held accountable for a long list of crimes that he committed, including the Brownsville Road School incident.
From the very start of the movie, where a school hijacking ends up creating waves of tragedy, Alston seems to have a direct hand in every act of evil committed in the city. This is ironic on a symbolic level, as he is the city sheriff and is tasked with maintaining peace and balance. Instead, he abuses his position within the community and brings people like Pettis to redirect the blame instead. In the final moments of ‘A Day to Die,’ the existing structure is dismantled as the leaked video makes it to the news. With the truth coming out to everyone, the city seems ready for a spiritual rebirth, one without nefarious agents like Alston.
