Directed by Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos, Netflix’s ‘A Father’s Miracle’ or ‘La celda de los milagros’ is the story of a man named Héctor who has developmental and speech difficulties that make it difficult for him to process information quickly. He deeply loves his daughter Alma, who is his only real source of strength in a difficult world. The Mexican drama focuses on the unexpected turn of events in Héctor and Alma’s lives when the father is arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. Alma eyes a pair of sneakers while they stand outside a store, but the sneakers are taken by the daughter of a police captain.
Following that, the captain’s daughter accidentally falls from a high platform and dies as Héctor follows her. This leads to his imprisonment, and the police captain vows to teach him a lesson. The innocent Héctor struggles in prison, even as his fellow inmates begin to realize that he may be innocent. As Alma hopes to save her father, both of them face unexpected challenges. A Father’s Miracle Reflects the Spirit of the Korean Movie Miracle in Cell No. 7
‘A Father’s Miracle’ is a fictional story based on the South Korean film ‘7-beon-bang-ui seon-mul’ or ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7,’ helmed by Lee Hwan-kyung. Written by Patricio Saiz, it adds a Mexican flavor to the Korean film’s storyline. The original film is a commentary on human nature. It delves into a world where both empathy and apathy coexist. The Turkish movie also represents this duality through its intense story of good and evil. The characters are grounded in both films and don’t appear to be caricaturish representations of poverty or power.
The medical condition of Héctor in the Mexican film adds to the development of the character, as it does for Yong-go, who is the father in the Korean movie. Héctor’s journey reflects the injustice that many falsely incarcerated people in the world face on a daily basis. In an interview with Animal MX, Omar Chaparro, who essays the role of Héctor in the film, said that the film’s story is necessary in a world devoid of empathy.
He added that love is the only thing that matters and that there are wonderful stories everywhere. He opined that the film adds a Mexican flavor to the story that has already been captured in the South Korean film and its Turkish remake of the same name. Héctor’s neurological issues make it even more difficult for him to survive the prison environment. His struggle for justice stems from his deep love for his daughter and the happiness he experiences with her. Speaking to El Informador, Omar Chaparro described Héctor as a childlike man. Though his medical conditions affect his ability to reason, they do not interfere with his capacity for love. Due to his ability to feel love and empathy, Héctor is able to fight for justice and redemption with the support of his daughter.
Although the film is imaginary, it is rooted in complex social realities that many individuals in the world can possibly relate to. It highlights class differences, systematic issues, corruption, and injustice. The film is also a relevant commentary on familial values and the ways in which they influence decisions. On one hand, the police captain uses his power to take revenge for his daughter’s death and plots against Héctor, who is also driven by his love for his daughter.
