In March 2015, Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins were fast asleep in the former’s home in Vallejo, California, when their life changed forever. They soon became the center of a kidnapping case that later came to be known as the “real-life ‘Gone Girl’ kidnapping.” The episode, ‘Denise and Aaron Quinn Get the Last Word’ of CBS’ ’48 Hours’ delves deeper into their baffling home invasion and kidnapping, which quickly spiraled into a controversial investigation, placing Aaron and Denise under public scrutiny. It also features interviews with them, another survivor, and the law enforcement official involved in the case.
Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins Faced Suspicions Until the Kidnapper Was Arrested
Around 3 am on March 23, 2015, Aaron Quinn and his then-29-year-old girlfriend, Denise Huskins, were sleeping in his home in Vallejo, California, when an intruder broke into the house. According to Aaron, the intruder then asked Denise to bind him with zip ties before the perpetrator bound her. He recalled that the intruder then put on headphones and blacked-out goggles. Shortly after, the man threatened Aaron and Denise into ingesting a sedative before kidnapping Denise and instructing him not to contact the authorities, as per reports. While reports on the exact figure varied, court documents show a demand totaling $17,000 was made to Aaron via emails and texts. When Aaron finally contacted the officials, the suspicions first fell on him because it had been several hours after the abduction.

On March 25, 2015, Denise was released near her family’s home in Huntington Beach, California. According to court records, she later told the authorities that her captor had raped her twice after kidnapping her and threatened to release the video of the acts if she told the police about it. Investigators initially claimed that Aaron and Denise had orchestrated the fake kidnapping, even leading to a press conference about the same. Things changed in June 2015 when another similar home invasion led detectives to connect the crime to Denise’s kidnapping. It revealed crucial digital evidence, such as a mobile phone and forensic links, revealing the kidnapper to be a disbarred attorney and former Marine, Matthew Muller. He was arrested on June 8, 2015, for the June 2015 home invasion.

On July 13, 2015, authorities officially announced federal kidnapping charges. In September 2016, Matthew pleaded guilty to one count of federal kidnapping of Denise and confessed to the crime. He was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison in March 2017. By 2018, Matthew was also charged with kidnapping, burglary, robbery, and two counts of rape by force, but in November 2020, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial for these charges. In March 2022, he was deemed competent and pleaded no contest to all the charges. Matthew was sentenced to 31 years in prison, to run concurrently with his 40-year term. He later faced additional charges related to cold cases and received two concurrent life sentences in March 2025. Matthew is currently incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.
Aaron Has Transformed the Ordeal Into a Fight for Reform Alongside Denise
Following the ordeal, Aaron and Denise filed a lawsuit against the city of Vallejo for charges like defamation, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false arrest. Court records suggest that they reportedly spoke out about the hurdles they had to go through because the law enforcement officials initially claimed that they had lied about the kidnapping. Ultimately, in 2018, the city settled the suit by paying $2.5 million to Aaron and Denise. Although the authorities later apologized to them, it is essential to note that officials didn’t admit to any wrongdoing. Aaron and Denise have collectively turned their dreadful experience into a platform for change, particularly in how law enforcement interacts with victims of violent crimes.
Aaron and Denise have begun working with law enforcement agencies and investigators to improve training surrounding trauma-informed interviewing. The couple has also been supporting broader conversations about victims’ rights and protection. On June 8, 2021, Aaron co-authored the book ‘Victim F: From Crime Victims to Suspects to Survivors,’ which is a memoir offering a deeply personal account of what he and Denise endured during the kidnapping and in the aftermath. His and Denise’s advocacy led to their involvement in supporting a proposed Senate Bill 1056, which aims to make the court issue protective orders over evidence that is sexually explicit and involves victims.
It further limits how that evidence can be accessed, copied, or shared. In March 2026, the bill moved forward after receiving a unanimous 6-0 vote from the California Senate Public Safety Committee. Aaron and Denise’s story also came into focus on ‘American Nightmare’ in 2024. In August 2025, the pair won the CDAA Witness of the Year Award. By the following month, they attended the California DA Investigators’ Conference, where they spoke about their journey. In March 2026, they announced a speaking tour in June drawn from accounts of some notable Netflix documentaries. As of writing, Aaron is serving as a Physical Therapist and Trainer. He is also currently associated with the channel Crime Unfiltered and the venture Apiros.
Aaron Quinn’s Life Today Centers on Family, Fatherhood, and Healing
Beyond his professional endeavors and advocacy, Aaron has built a personal life rich in love and laughter. When he and Denise faced the ordeal, they had been dating for less than a year. Eventually, through every hurdle and challenge, they stood by each other as pillars of support, strengthening their connection. On September 29, 2018, Aaron and Denise finally tied the knot in the presence of their loved ones. Their lives were further lit up with joy when they welcomed their two beautiful daughters, Olivia and Naomi, in March 2020 and November 2022, respectively. While expressing his affection for his daughters, Aaron said, “More than anything, I just hope that they grow up to be like their mom. And if they do that, they’ll be OK.”
Aaron and Denise often go on romantic dates together, whether it’s a day out on the weekend or spending holidays on a boat. They celebrated their 11 years of togetherness in July 2025 and their 7 years of marriage in September 2025. On December 25, 2025, Aaron faced a massive heartbreak when his father, Joseph Quinn, unexpectedly passed away. The profound loss left a gaping hole in Aaron’s heart that can never be filled. Amid the pain, Aaron always seeks solace in his mother’s presence, who is also a steady source of strength in his life. In his free time, Aaron dedicates himself to maintaining a strict fitness routine.
