Netflix’s ‘French Lover’ deals with the happenings in the lives of Marion and Abel, two individuals who come from very different worlds. Abel is a film star who faces challenges in his career, and Marion is a humble waitress aspiring to open her own food truck. Fate works in mysterious ways to make them cross paths, which leads to a tale of love, class difference, and loyalty. As the two of them navigate their complex feelings for each other, they find themselves facing unique challenges that test them on a philosophical level.
The charming chemistry and the banter-filled dialogue between the lead characters are the emotional core of the film. Haunted by the paparazzi and their own security, they find it difficult to express complete honesty or show the full extent of their thoughts on each other. As the narrative reaches an end, the relationship between the main characters hangs in the balance. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Abel and Marion Face Difficult Hurdles in Their Relationship
Due to the complications originating from Abel’s shooting of the Renaud Léman film with his former lover Léna, the relationship between the film star and Marion runs into unexpected hurdles. When Marion spots her lover and Léna getting a little too close to each other during the shooting of the film, it makes her uncomfortable. This is followed by an argument between the two, wherein Abel refuses to go on a trip planned by Marion. Earlier in the narrative, Marion’s conversation with Adeline makes her think that Abel is just using her as a means to boost his own image in front of the media. After the argument, the two main characters break up after realizing that their priorities in life are extremely different. Marion is left heartbroken, and Abel pursues a short fling with Léna to get over his sadness.
However, things change for the protagonists as the César Award ceremony approaches. On the way to the ceremony, Abel happens to check Marion’s social media profile and finds out that she is running a food truck, which ignites a doubt in his heart about his decision to leave her. He gets visibly disturbed by the thought of how he could let her go. At the ceremony, while talking to Sami, he suddenly realizes that he is not feeling the vibes of the place, and wishes to rush back to Marion. He suddenly takes off from the venue after realizing that the best moment of his life wouldn’t be winning a César award, but reuniting with the love of his life. He then heads to Marion’s food truck and surprises her. She is taken aback by Abel’s sudden appearance, after which the film star enters the food truck to help her out.
Marion and Abel Reunite in a Heartwarming Moment
Abel makes Marion realize that being with her is more important than materialistic things like awards. The two sit down for a conversation, wherein Abel says that his nomination for the award happened because of Marion, and that he made a mistake by letting her go. He also tells her that he chose to be there with her instead of being there at the ceremony. This makes Marion realize that the two of them have been immature in the past. She urges him to return to the award ceremony immediately, and drives through the hustle and bustle of Paris to get him back to the venue on time. She is able to use her insane driving skills to get him back to the venue, and also promises to watch the proceedings on her phone. Abel rushes back to the ceremony just in time as his name is announced as the winner of the best actor award.
He rushes to the stage and gracefully accepts his award. In his acceptance speech, he expresses gratitude to Marion for making him believe in himself again and also says that she made him a better man than he ever thought he could be. Marion gets emotional in the food truck as she sheds happy tears watching Abel publicly acknowledge her. The two of them run towards each other in true cinematic style and kiss passionately on the red carpet.
Despite the presence of the paparazzi and others watching them, they reveal their truth to the world and continue kissing. This is the first time that the two of them feel comfortable declaring their love for each other in front of the whole world. Both their insecurities and the need for secrecy vanish as they realize that they can experience true happiness only if they stay with each other. Despite the challenges and the emotional hurdles, the two lovers reunite, proving that their love is based on genuine feelings.
