Is Netflix’s Accused Based on a True Story?

Netflix’s ‘Accused’ is a Hindi-language drama that revolves around the experiences of Dr. Geetika Sen, a renowned gynecologist in the UK. She lives a happy life with her wife, Meera, and the two are on the verge of adopting a baby. This happy life suddenly changes when Geetika is accused of being a sexual predator and abusing her authority as a doctor. In the aftermath of this serious allegation, Meera starts having her own doubts and suspicions. Geetika becomes the subject of social media abuse, and her relationship with Meera descends into chaos, as the line between truth and lies starts fading away.

Meera, who is also a doctor, tries to find out the truth about her wife at any cost. As Geetika and Meera’s relationship is consumed by arguments and tension, they are forced to make difficult choices that may have consequences for their future. Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, the Indian film is an engrossing and unpredictable tale.

Accused Sheds Light on the Convergence of Sexual Misconduct and Power in the Medical Field

Written by Sima Agarwal and Yash Keshwani, ‘Accused’ is primarily a deep dive into the complexities of sexual abuse within the medical field. Geetika is accused by patients and interns at her hospital, which complicates matters for her. When the HR department gets word of this, Geetika is forced to confront the allegations. Although the story and characters are fictional, the narrative realistically deals with the seriousness of such allegations. Other than the sexual misconduct allegations, Geetika is also accused of misusing her power and influence as a renowned gynecologist to allegedly touch patients inappropriately and using her position of power to carry on with alleged behavior without consequences or transparency. The politics and issues of the Me Too Movement find a representation in the narrative, which specifically focuses on how such allegations can affect medical professionals who hold respected jobs and status in society.

Geetika’s professional issues also cause problems in her personal life, as she struggles to maintain a happy relationship with Meera. Through the experiences of Geetika, the story conveys how serious allegations can have a deep impact on mental health and family life as a whole. Geetika is also subjected to disturbing comments on social media due to the accusations against her. In the real world, social media is a powerful tool for spreading information, but it can also become a dangerous platform that allows people to defame those still under investigation. Since Geetika’s profession is one where she has to have extremely personal interactions with her patients, the reports against her make it difficult for her to maintain her credibility.

While the film gives a clear sense of her perspectives, it also highlights the views and experiences of her alleged victims. When the truth remains unknown, it becomes difficult to completely take the side of the alleged victims or the accused. This is a confusing scenario that often leads to negative consequences or strong emotions. Since Geetika is in a position of power, the accusations against her also become more potent. Thus, the movie realistically portrays the dilemma of the responsible authorities who deal with such serious cases where the truth is far from clear.

Accused Intricately Comments on Gender Roles, Sexuality, and Marriage

At the heart of ‘Accused’ is a queer love story that faces multiple threats and challenges. Meera and Geetika’s relationship goes through a turbulent phase as the latter deals with the allegations against her. The movie also highlights how gender plays a major role in determining perspectives. As a woman holding a position of power, Geetika faces social media trolling that also targets her sexuality and race. In this process, Meera also becomes involved in a dangerous case, just because of her association with Geetika. Other than dealing with their own relationship issues, Meera and Geetika are forced to confront offensive views that target their identity at a deeply personal level. The film also attempts to bring queer experiences and stories to the mainstream, while also exploring social issues.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Anubhuti Kashyap, the director of the movie, said that the narrative deliberately avoided the depiction of physical intimacy between Meera and Geetika in the film. She called this a political choice meant to normalize queer relationships for Indian viewers without causing discomfort. She opined, “The idea was: let people first accept queer relationships as normal. Then they’ll be ready for the next step.” The filmmaker also expressed, “We want more and more people to accept queer relationships. That was purely the intention.”

Konkona Sen Sharma, who portrays Geetika in the film, divulged, “How people react to women in power reveals more about them. Many are uncomfortable. Women are often held to higher standards — the same behaviour is called bossy in a woman but not in a man.” The movie sensitively examines how gender alters people’s perspectives and shapes their views on serious matters like sexual abuse. All in all, ‘Accused’ is a deeply relevant and socially sensitive film that depicts complex social realities through diverse characters and a grounded story.
