The residents of Houston, Texas, were left shaken when 59-year-old Dr. Alf Stefan Andersson was brutally killed inside his apartment in June 2013. His untimely death left his loved ones searching for answers as the detectives dug deeper into the tragedy. Oxygen’s ‘Prosecuting Evil with Kelly Siegler: High-Heel Homicide’ offers a closer look at the circumstances surrounding the death and how the killer was arrested. The episode also features interviews with his acquaintances and law enforcement officials who worked on the case.
Stefan Andersson’s Remains Were Found Inside His Home in Texas
Dr. Alf Stefan Andersson arrived as a bundle of joy in his parents’ lives on May 11, 1954. He was born into a tight-knit family in Västerås, Sweden, where he grew up surrounded by the love and support of his parents. Growing up, he had always shared a close bond with his sisters, Marie Andersson Bremberg and Anneli Andersson. Stefan’s outgoing personality had helped him develop multiple meaningful friendships over the years. He was also known for his generosity, brilliant viewpoints, and remarkable sense of humor. After completing his early education, he earned a degree in Pharmacology from Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden. Stefan then completed his PhD in Pharmacology at the same university.

Driven by his aspiration to build an incredible career in medical research, Stefan moved to Dallas, Texas, in the 1990s. There, he eventually joined UT Southwestern Medical Center. After gaining valuable hands-on experience at the institution, he briefly worked at Merck & Co. in New Jersey. In December 2009, Stefan became a Research Professor at the University of Houston’s Center for Nuclear Receptors and Cell Signaling (CNRCS), focusing on research in women’s reproductive health. There, his research also focused on other areas, such as prostate cancer. In Texas, Stefan first crossed paths with Ana Lilia Trujillo, and they soon began dating. However, they were unable to work out their differences, leading to their breakup.
Despite the breakup, Stefan and Ana remained in contact. Around 3:41 am on June 9, 2013, she called 911 and reported that he was bleeding profusely and that she feared he would die. When first responders arrived at Stefan’s apartment in Houston, they found him dead in a pool of blood on the hallway floor. They noticed he had injuries to his head, and the walls had blood spatter. Forensic experts discovered a bloody five-inch blue suede stiletto pump near his remains, and the shoe also had gray hairs on it. The autopsy report revealed that he had at least 25 puncture wounds across his face and head. It also uncovered that he had several defensive wounds on his hands. Stefan’s cause of death was determined to be blunt-force head and facial trauma.
The Killer’s Confession and Forensic Evidence Helped Solve the Case
At the scene, officials found Ana Trujillo covered in blood and learned that she and Stefan had gone to a Houston bar and drank there before taking a cab in the early hours of June 9, 2013, and arriving at his home. According to official reports, when she was questioned at the station, she claimed that he had asked her to get back together with him, but when she refused, he turned violent. In her statements, she alleged that Stefan became aggressive and held her, preventing her from leaving, which was followed by a physical altercation between them.

Further police records suggest that Ana admitted she then struck the 59-year-old multiple times with her suede stiletto pump but insisted it was in self-defense. According to court records, authorities noticed that she had some bruises on her body. However, upon examination, the experts concluded that they had been present for weeks. Reports state that Ana was treated at a hospital for those bruises after she allegedly got into an altercation with a woman and a man at another location. She was ultimately arrested and charged with the murder of Stefan on June 9, and her initial bond was set at $100,000.
As investigators continued digging deeper, they discovered that Ana had been arrested for drunken driving two times in 2008 and 2010. Reports state that although she was convicted of one of those charges, the other was eventually dropped. Official reports indicate that several witnesses came forward claiming that they had witnessed Ana becoming violent toward them whenever she was drinking. Furthermore, detectives learned that Stefan and Ana had been in an on-and-off relationship, which suggested their connection was tumultuous.
Ana Trujillo is Incarcerated at a Texas Correctional Facility Today
The jury trial of Ana commenced in late March 2014, during which the prosecution emphasized that she attacked Stefan during an argument and struck him several times with the pointed heel of her shoe. They presented forensic evidence showing that the shoe caused the injury to his face and head. Moreover, they introduced several witnesses who testified about her alleged violent behavior. On the other hand, the defense claimed that Ana had acted in self-defense because she feared for her safety when Stefan became aggressive toward her that fateful day. They insisted that she didn’t intend to kill the 59-year-old and challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of the medical evidence.

On April 8, 2014, the jury found Ana guilty of the murder of Stefan. She received a life sentence, with the possibility of parole only after serving a mandatory term of 30 years in prison on April 11, 2014. Ana later appealed the judgment on the grounds of alleged denial of legal representation, improper admission of character evidence, and ineffective assistance of counsel. On July 28, 2015, the court rejected all her arguments and affirmed her conviction and sentencing. Although she subsequently sought further discretionary review, her petition was refused in November 2015. As of writing, Ana is serving her sentence at the Patrick O’Daniel Unit, a prison facility in Gatesville, Texas. Her parole eligibility date is scheduled for October 4, 2043.
