The day of August 12, 2023, started normally for Alison Davis, but it turned into a nightmare when her husband, Kevin Ray Davis, tragically passed away. Although she insisted it was an accident, she suddenly found herself in the spotlight as she was accused of being the killer. CBS’ ’48 Hours: A Death in the Stairwell’ explores the circumstances surrounding the death of Kevin and the legal proceedings that eventually found her not guilty. It also features interviews with Alison’s father, Steve Krause, her close friends, and the officials who worked on the case.
Alison Davis Was Accused of Killing Kevin Based on Conflicting Accounts
Alison K. Davis was seemingly leading a happy life with her husband, Kevin Ray Davis, at their residence in 1728 Douglas Lane in New Haven, Indiana. According to her father, Steve Krause, she and Kevin welcomed a furry pup, Willow, into their lives since they had no children. Moreover, her best friend, Kasey Klemm, described Alison and Kevin as a “happy couple.” However, their life turned upside down on August 12, 2023. Around 4:30 am, Alison called 911 to report that Kevin had fallen from the stairs and was unresponsive. She also told them in the call that there was a lot of blood. When officials arrived around 4:38 am, they rushed Kevin to the hospital, but unfortunately, he passed away a few hours later. At the scene, Alison claimed that around 1 am, she and Kevin returned home from a local bar after drinking.

In her statements, Alison said that after reaching home, she had an argument with Kevin, and he went to sleep upstairs. She claimed that she was asleep downstairs when she allegedly woke up from a loud sound. According to records, she told the officers that she then discovered Kevin lying unresponsive in a pool of blood, following which she called 911. Alison claimed that she presumed he fell down the stairs because he was drunk. A few days later, the autopsy revealed that Kevin’s cause of death was blunt force injury to the head, indicating that he was attacked with a blunt object. Besides that, his manner of death was reportedly ruled a homicide. Moreover, the experts informed the officials that the lack of oxygen in Kevin’s brain suggested that he had been brain-dead for several hours.
It indicated that Alison might not have called for help immediately. When detectives spoke to Kevin’s mother, they learned that Alison had told her that she and Kevin were sleeping in the bedroom. As per reports, Alison claimed to her mother-in-law that Kevin fell down the stairs when he woke up to drink water. Similarly, they discovered that Alison had reportedly presented a different account to her brother-in-law. She claimed on a call with him that she was in bed with Willow on that fateful morning as Kevin was moving around the house. She continued that she allegedly heard a loud sound but didn’t get up to check on Kevin until a while later. Ultimately, Alison was arrested on December 22, 2023, for the murder of Kevin and was held in Allen County Jail without bail.
Following Her Acquittal, Alison Davis Has Chosen to Lead a Private Life
The jury trial of Alison Davis for the murder of Kevin began on May 6, 2025. During the trial, the prosecution claimed that there were multiple inconsistencies in Alison’s statements to the detectives and Kevin’s family members. They pointed out that the autopsy had revealed that Kevin had been hit with a blunt object, which was contrary to her claims that he had fallen off the stairs. On the other hand, the defense alleged that on August 12, 2023, Kevin was heavily intoxicated. They claimed that he had hit his head on the banister of the stairs. The defense emphasized the fact that the crime scene pictures were taken four days after the incident. They pointed out that by then, Alison’s father, Steve Krause, had reportedly cleaned up the scene after taking permission from the detectives.
According to the defense, the crime scene was “corrupted.” Furthermore, they contended that officials were unable to find any murder weapon or motive, and there was no definitive evidence tying Alison to the crime. After four days of trial, the jury deliberated for six and a half hours. Ultimately, Alison was found not guilty of the murder of Kevin on May 9, 2025. The following day, she was released from custody and walked away a free person. After her release, Alison has chosen to lead a quiet life, far away from the spotlight. However, according to reports, she currently resides with her parents. She has been trying to get back to her everyday life after losing her husband, Kevin. However, Alison is not alone since she still has the companionship of her pup, Willow.
