Amber Prater’s continued weight loss journey was featured to the audience in season 9, episode 1 of TLC’s ‘My 600-lb Life: Where Are They Now?’ She appeared on the show with her husband, Nathan. Initially, she felt her marriage was crumbling due to her husband’s obesity. However, when Nathan began Dr. Nowzaradan’s weight loss program, the doctor pointed out that Amber’s 502.3 lbs made her overweight. During her next appointment after becoming a part of the program herself, she gained 3 lbs. This prompted the doctor to send the couple to therapy to work on their toxic home dynamics. Amber then committed to the program, eventually bringing her weight down to 461.4 lbs. Encouraged by her progress, Dr. Nowzaradan performed an endoscopy to determine if she could undergo a revision weight loss surgery.
Amber Prater’s Emotional Hurdles Significantly Stalled Her Progress
By the one-year and two-month mark, Amber Prater was slipping from her progress. She ended up gaining 3 lbs, bringing her weight to 458 lbs. Dr. Nowzaradan informed her to fix her eating habits if she wanted real change. Despite her efforts, when she returned for her next appointment two months later, she had gained another pound. However, she didn’t let this deter her. Two weeks later, Amber joined the gym, determined to get back on track. At the one-year, seven-month mark, she ended up losing only 4 lbs. Dr. Nowzaradan pointed out that, although she was losing weight, the progress was too slow. That was when she opened up about the recent loss of a job, which had thrown her off course. Amber also mentioned how she was trying to regain her emotional footing.
Hence, Dr. Nowzaradan recommended Amber to attend therapy without Nathan. During her session, the therapist gave her a simple assignment to note down her achievements. During those sessions, the therapist also observed that Amber was putting Nathan’s journey first while letting her progress fade in the background. She realized that her stalled weight loss might be linked to sexual trauma from a previous relationship. Eventually, by the one-year and 10-month point, Amber brought her weight down to 448.1 lbs. As she approached the two-year milestone, she continued to exercise regularly with her trainer. Since Amber had already gotten her first weight loss surgery in her teenage years, she then set her sights on getting her revised weight loss surgery.
Amber is Efficiently Juggling Her Master’s Degree and Supervisor Role
Amber was a single mother for 10 years. During that time, she completed her college from home while simultaneously working. In January 2020, she became an Income Tax Preparer at Sycamore 3 Tax Group LLC in Palestine, Texas. Over time, she expanded her professional journey, joining the Tyler Independent School District in June 2022. Just two months later, Amber took on the role of an Educational Diagnostician Clerk at the same establishment. The reality star served in the position until March 2023. By October of the same year, Amber had taken another step forward and landed a job as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional at BrightSpring Health Services.
Amber moved on from this role by April 2024. Soon after, she stepped into a leadership role as a Care Team Supervisor at Elara Caring. Her entrepreneurial spirit also began to shine through in February 2025 as she began taking orders for custom-made superhero beanies and baseball caps. It ultimately turned into an additional income stream. She took another major stride in April 2025. Amber proudly shared her decision to return to college to pursue a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Special Education. In June 2025, the reality star further achieved a long-awaited milestone. On her social media, Amber announced that she and Nathan were finally moving into their new home.
Since Nathan had secured a new job, it prompted Amber to transfer to the Arlington branch of Elara Caring, with June 23, 2025, as the first day of her new chapter. She has also maintained an active presence on social media, particularly Facebook. She uses it as a window into both her professional achievements and her personal life. She uses the platform not only to promote her friend’s chocolate bar business but also to share job openings at her Care facility. Aside from her uplifting messages, Amber’s life is a reflection of resilience, purpose, and growth.
Amber Faces Every Challenge Head On With Her Family by Her Side
In her personal life, Amber has had her fair share of challenges. However, everything took a turn for the better in March 2012 when she married the love of her life, Nathan. He gradually became her source of unwavering support. In March 2025, the couple celebrated 13 years of their marriage. They always stood by one another, especially during the weight loss journey. Amber, in particular, often placed Nathan’s progress above her own, as noted by the therapist. However, it highlighted the depth of her love and commitment.
Even when her own transformation stalled, she never failed to show her delight in her partner’s progress. In May 2025, Amber penned down a heartfelt message for Nathan on Facebook during his birthday. Referring to him as “the love of my life,” Amber wrote, “Today a great Godly man, husband, father and grandfather hits a major milestone in his life. 40 never looked better on you N Duane Prater.” Besides this, she is also close to her son, Mark, and daughter, Hannah. However, her bond with the latter is especially close since both of them regularly post photos and heartwarming tributes for one another.
On Mother’s Day, Hannah expressed gratitude towards “the best mom ever!” After Hannah’s marriage, Amber and Nathan welcomed their son-in-law, Jordan Brown, into the family just like their son. The reality star also maintains a beautiful connection with her mother, Tracie. The latter never misses a chance to express her love and appreciation for her daughter on social media, noting the hurdles Amber faced in her life. The reality star always makes sure to hold her family close to her heart. She has even been planning for a family getaway in 2026. Above all, Amber cherishes her adorable pups greatly and always showers them with her affection.
