‘Angela’ presents a riveting narrative, full of twists and turns across its season 1. The Spanish Netflix show charts the abusive marriage between the titular protagonist and her husband, Gonzalo, who attempts to discredit and destroy his wife by manipulating circumstances. In cahoots with another man, he orchestrates a plot wherein the stranger, Roberto Irigoyen, convinces Angela that her husband wants to kill her and has hired him to complete the task. Nonetheless, once the authorities get involved, the stranger disappears, making the tormented woman appear crazy and paranoid. Still, once Angela retakes control over her reality, she and her friend, Lawyer Esther, manage to untwist Gonzalo’s web of lies, tricking the man into revealing his true self to the world. This conclusive ending, paired with the lack of an official announcement for season 2, casts the series’ future in doubt. Still, if the title’s popularity leads to the greenlighting for another season, fans might be able to expect a continuation by late 2027.
Angela Season 2 Could Explore the Protagonist’s Animosity With Roberto
Season 1 of ‘Angela’ brings the protagonist’s story to a definitive end, where narrative threads of her past relationship with Gonzalo have all been tied up. After the woman tricks her husband into showing his true, abusive colors on camera, it’s only a matter of time before the authorities take him in. Thus, his case against Angela, in which he attempted to declare her an unfit guardian to their daughters, is dismissed, allowing the mother to reunite with her children. In the end, she gets to return to work as an architect and start a new chapter in her family’s life without having to deal with her husband’s violent looming shadow. Yet, while everything else falls into place, Angela and Esther opt for one chaotic resolution to an intense grudge. Even though Gonzalo had been the mastermind behind the entire charade, which sought to paint his wife as clinically insane, he wasn’t alone in the endeavor.
Roberto, who played the role of Eduardo Silva, is as much to blame for the turn that Angela’s life takes. As a result, in the end, the latter and her friend end up setting fire to the man’s bar, exacting revenge on him and shutting his unsafe business in one fell swoop. Therefore, as the season ends, it leaves open the potential for his incident to catch a bigger flame, bringing more trouble to Angela’s door. While it is unlikely that the authorities will figure out her crime, it’s likely that Roberto would know exactly who to suspect. Their relationship, as it remains ripe with betrayal, attraction, guilt, and bitterness in season 1, presents a nuanced layer to the story. Thus, a more complex exploration of their rivalry could be an interesting foundation for a potential season 2.
Angela Season 2 Would Likely Bring Back a Majority of the Original Cast
At its core, ‘Angela’ is a character-driven show that relies on engrossing interpersonal dynamics in order to explore its central themes. As a result, there’s a high chance that most of the characters, depending on their fates at the end of season 1, will make a comeback if the series gets picked up for another season. This means in a potential continuation, Verónica Sánchez will likely step back into the role of the titular character, Angela. Likewise, Lucía Jiménez, who plays Esther, and Iván Marcos, who plays Ander, might also reprise their roles as two important pillars of the main character’s emotional and judicial support systems.
However, whether or not Jaime Zatarain’s Roberto makes a similar return will depend on the direction the series takes in terms of the narrative’s central conflict. Alternatively, Daniel Grao, who plays the central antagonist role of Gonzalo, will likely remain absent from a continuation given the finalistic end to his character’s storyline. On the other hand, the future of child actresses Sua Díez (Irati) and Maia Zaitegi (Maia) similarly remains ambiguous since there’s always a chance a continuation could age up their characters, introducing new challenges to Angela’s narrative as a mother. In the same vein, if the show returns for a season 2, fans can expect to see some new faces who will likely bring new additions to the tale, enhancing the overall storyline.
The Future of Angela Season 2 Remains Uncertain
Even though there’s some potential for ‘Angela’ to expand into a multi-season story, there’s a possibility that the series might choose to end with its first season. The Spanish show is a remake of the 2021 British show ‘Angela Black.’ For the most part, the two titles remain noticeably similar, even sporting an identical number of episodes in their first season. Notably, the latter had a singular season run with the story ending on a similar note as the latter show’s season finale. Therefore, there’s a high probability that ‘Angela’ will follow in the same footsteps and refrain from adding a continuation to the story. Instead, there’s a chance the same story might find another remake in a different language, allowing a new lens to delve into the exciting themes of the tale.
