As a dating show revolving around a diverse group of virgins as they hope to find true love and the person they want to give their first to, Hulu’s ‘Are You My First‘ breaks all bounds of the genre. That’s because while there are definitely productions that place the focus more on emotional connections rather than physical ones, this takes things one step beyond by being even more intentional. Therefore, of course, with the cozy dates, interpersonal drama, revealing challenges, as well as unexpected bombshells, we can’t help but wonder precisely how much of this original is even real – if at all.
Are You My First is As True and Authentic As It Can Be
‘Are You My First?’ has been billed as a reality/unscripted dating experiment from the moment it was first announced as a Hulu project, and there has never been any contradiction of the same. This means that none of the contestants featured are asked to deliver pre-written dialogues or forced to perform concocted plotlines in front of the cameras to ensure constant entertainment for viewers. However, owing to the scope of this production, especially considering the way it is essentially a blend of ‘Love Island’ and ‘Perfect Match’ but for virgins, it’s very likely there is producer involvement.
While these behind-the-scenes personnel definitely play a significant role during the planning as well as pre-production period of the series, they are also involved during filming. This may sometimes just be limited to ensuring the execution of a challenge, perfectly equipping all public places to capture any conversation that may occur, or setting up for dates, but it can broaden too. They do not tell the cast to start any drama or play any role in how things develop between different individuals as time passes, but they may possibly nudge reactions at certain times.
The show made it evident that producers ask participants to step away for their confessionals at any given point during the day, even when they may have just settled into the Love Shack with their potential beau. So, they can utilize such opportunities to get excitable or over-the-top reactions from them through certain prompts or by asking specific questions based on their particular connections. Everything these contestants do at the resort is filmed anyway, thanks to the carefully placed cameras across the proper ty and their rooms, but these additions do provide a good flair.
Nevertheless, we should specify that the producers clearly asked all cast members to use one particular line whenever they are building a new possible relationship to reinforce the show’s vision. After all, while Michael said he could see himself losing his virginity to Rachael, she asserted the same for him, and then Jake stated it for Sara, whereas Madi giddily admitted this about Noah. Katya, Goodwin, Ty, Jade, Andrew, Carissa, Mike, Deya, Layne, Brooklyn, and others also said this at one point or another. Yet, since no part of this is actually manufactured in any way, shape, or form, Hulu’s ‘Are You My First?’ remains as authentic, natural, and true to reality as possible.
All Participants of Are You My First Are Truly Virgins
The fact that all 21 cast members to appear in this original experiment, whether as initial contestants or as bombshells, are actually really virgins is also a significant reason behind its authenticity. The series’ creators and hosts have even confirmed this, with Colton Underwood (‘The Bachelor’ season 23 star, aka Virgin Bachelor) specifying he understood their lack of intimate experience. His co-host, Kaitlyn Bristowe (‘The Bachelorette’ season 11 star), added that while she loved this experience and helping these individuals get out of their comfort zone, sometimes the awkward silences got to her – “Everything in me wants to step in and be like, ‘Somebody say something!’”
We should also mention that although season 2 of this series has not yet been announced or confirmed in any manner, Colton has already started receiving applications from celibate singles over social media. “I have never had so many virgins sliding into my DMs…,” he told the New York Post around mid-August 2025. “But I will say this, if and when Season 2 happens, we will have a wide variety of virgins flocking to the show… I’ve also received a lot of friends nominating people. And then when you click on their profile, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, they would be good.’ I definitely have a list of screenshots and saves for Season 2 for casting.”
