‘Balaraw: Blood Island’ season 1 ends with the protagonist safe and sound but carrying a heavy weight of unanswered questions. Sabina’s quest to find her mother inadvertently leads her to an island in the mysterious Babang Yawa, where she uncovers unimaginable secrets about herself. In the process, she and her friends also end up dismantling the hold of the Cardomas’ brothers over the people of the island, allowing them to take charge of their own fates.
Yet, their departure from the island is nothing like what anyone expected. Sabina and her girlfriend, Bulak, along with a random sailor, are the only ones who successfully escape the island. In turn, Rebecca and her brother, Vedasto, stay behind to both appease and confront the Balaraw. Additionally, when the two women return home from the island, they unwittingly bring an unnatural horror with them. As such, there’s much left to explore in the story. Still, Netflix hasn’t renewed the series for a second season, leaving its future up in the air. If a renewal is announced soon enough, the show could return for another season in 2028.
Balaraw: Blood Island Can Explore the Relationship Between Rebecca and the Island in Season 2
One of the most shocking discoveries that happens in season 1 of ‘Balaraw: Blood Island’ stems from the relationship between the protagonist and the titular island. Although it is never confirmed, there is a strong implication that Sabina was actually born out of the special connection between Rebecca and the mystical island. Throughout the island, the two women have inexplicable experiences in the forests of Balaraw, where they experience visual and auditory hallucinations centered on the mysteries surrounding them. Repeatedly, the conclusion these women draw from these instances remains the same: the island is alive and has a will of its own. In the end, it’s this same otherworldly will that prevents Rebecca from returning home with her daughter.

Following a hallucinatory episode in the forest, Sabina believes that the island will only allow her mother to leave if she stays behind. Essentially, one must make the sacrifice in order for the other to gain her freedom. In the end, it’s Rebecca who chooses to make the sacrifice, allowing her daughter to return to her old life. The season ends with the mother and her brother, Vedasto, confronting the island by venturing into its center, where they find a beating heart encased within roots. A gunshot is fired, but no other development is depicted. If the show decides to venture into season 2, the aftermath of this exact confrontation will likely become a driving force in the storyline. Thus, the inner workings of the mysterious island, its powers, and its influence on the main characters can be explored more in depth.
Balaraw: Blood Island Might Introduce New Antagonists
Season 1 of ‘Balaraw: Blood Island’ witnesses massive bloodshed and the deaths of numerous major characters. Still, the surviving characters can be expected to remain a part of the series and return for a potential season 2. This will include the central mother-daughter duo, Sabina (Janine Gutierrez) and Rebecca (Agot Isidro). Furthermore, characters with close ties to the protagonists can also be expected to make a comeback. Thus, Charlie Dizon, who portrays the role of Bulak, Sabina’s girlfriend, is also likely to reprise her role. Similarly, the character of Vedasto will also continue playing a major role in the show’s future.

Notably, season 1 clears most of the antagonistic characters off the board. The Cardomas brothers, all four of them, die over the course of the story one after the other. This leaves the island back in the hands of its native inhabitants, who are now free to run their society as they deem fit. Although this development resolves one major conflict in the series, it will only be a matter of time before another source of friction emerges. Therefore, in the absence of the old villains, the series can be expected to introduce some new faces who will fulfill an antagonistic role against Sabina and Rebecca.
Balaraw: Blood Island Season 2 Can Follow the Story of the Runaway Creature
At the end of season 1, as Sabina and Bulak are sailing away from the island, a winged creature is shown to be silently following them from the skies. Later, the same creature is shown attacking a group of men in the city who are exchanging gossip and tales about the mysterious island in the Babang Yawa. Thus, the story introduces a strange new element in which the dangers of the Balaraw island have escaped its confines and contaminated the outside world. This creates a stark juxtaposition to what happened on the island itself, as it was taken over by the Cardomas brothers and their foreign ideas of leadership and exploitation.

However, while the creature’s horrors are center stage, its identity and intentions remain shrouded in mystery. Although season 1 establishes that these creatures are transformations of dead inhabitants of the island, a potential season 2 can delve further into the lore behind them. Moreover, the significance of this specific creature, which escapes from the island, can also be explored. Does it have a direct connection to Sabina? Is it working in compliance with the island’s wishes or against it? Why haven’t other creatures been able to escape the island before? In addition to potentially answering these questions, a continuation can also focus on the more immediate consequences of the creature’s presence on the mainland. It’s likely that this will have an impact on Sabina’s life and maybe even work towards bringing her back to the island.
