Barbara Hunt: What Happened to David Sconce’s Ex-Wife?

HBO’s ‘The Mortician’ explores the life and crimes of David Sconce, offering additional insight into the business of death, creating a documentary series unlike any other. It incorporates not just archival footage but also exclusive interviews with those close to the matter to really underscore the gravity of the former’s offenses. Among those featured in this three-part original production is none other than David’s ex-wife, Barbara Hunt, the mother of his children before their eventual separation.

Barbara Hunt Loved David Sconce Too Much to See the Truth

Barbara Hunt was a young woman working in retail at a local mall in Los Angeles County, California, when she first met David Sconce. There was an immediate spark between them. According to their own accounts, she was really attracted to his charm and overall athletic physique, whereas he gravitated towards her sheer beauty and bright smile. In fact, he asserted on the show that he knew the second he saw her that he would spend the rest of his life with her, so he pulled out all the stops. David used his black card to impress Barbara on that fateful day, and because she was already interested, she quickly gave him her number. Gradually, things between them progressed, and they swiftly tied the knot in a beautiful, intimate ceremony surrounded by their loved ones.

However, on their wedding day, Barbara was approached by three members of David’s immediate family, who asked if she was truly ready to marry him and whether she was sure she wanted to go through with it. These family members included both of David’s maternal grandparents and his father, Jerry Sconce, who even told her it wasn’t too late for her to walk away. She was obviously a little shaken by this since she didn’t want her new husband’s family to question their relationship on the day of their wedding, but she carried on. On the show, Barbara said she was so head over heels in love with David and wanted to make their union work so much that she didn’t really clock his family’s concern.

Barbara Hunt Lives a Quiet Life in Arizona Today

While Barbara was not particularly interested in the family mortuary business and visited Lamb Funeral Home just a handful of times during her marriage to David Sconce, she did support him. She was also able to recognize that, although a little grim, it was extremely lucrative because it enabled the family, especially the youngsters, to lead an extremely comfortable life. After all, by the time 1996 rolled around, she and David were proud parents of two, with the latter providing them with everything they could ever desire and then some.

At the time, Barbara had begun realizing that something was seriously amiss because she had once found her husband in the basement, removing gold from the teeth of the dead. She admittedly never said anything out of both loyalty and fear, and even stood by him when he was apprehended, convicted, and sentenced to 5 years in prison for mutilating corpses, holding mass cremations, and hiring hitmen for rival morticians. It was following David’s release from prison that the family, alongside her in-laws, who had also been convicted in relation to these crimes, relocated to Lake Havasu City, Arizona, in the hopes of starting anew. Barbara vividly recalled that while she, David, and their children settled on one property, her in-laws moved in next door, eager to start over.

Yet, despite David subsequently getting a job in the transportation industry, he soon got caught up in legal troubles again for engaging in a bus coupon scam. This pattern of him going in and out of jail continued until he was ultimately sentenced to 25 years to life in prison in 2013 on gun charges, as they violated the lifetime parole he’d received in California. By this point, the couple had separated for good, and they soon even finalized their divorce. Since then, from what we can tell, Barbara Hunt has chosen to remain well away from the limelight so as to protect her and her children’s privacy in the long run. Yet, we do know that she likely continues to reside in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where she appears to have built a good life for herself.
