In Netflix’s ‘FUBAR,’ a team of CIA agents tries to save the world from the nefarious plans of villains who are hell-bent on destroying the world order as we know it. One of the key members of the team is Barry, who has been working for the agency from a very young age. Having spent most of his life working on missions, he hasn’t had time to venture out and have a life outside of espionage. This is why, when he finds love within his team, he tries to hold on to it as much as possible. However, there are some major complications with his love interest, Tina, and things get particularly worse in the second season. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Barry and Tina’s Love Story Tumbles in FUBAR Season 2
Barry’s love for Tina starts with something that he keeps to himself, but progresses rapidly over the course of Season 1, which ends with them entering a relationship. However, a major hitch arrives when Boro sells information about Luke Brunner, his daughter, and the team, which means that all of them, including Barry, are forced to hide out in a safe house. Because their location is supposed to be secret, Tina doesn’t know about it.
While she tries to figure it out, Barry sticks to protocol and doesn’t reveal the location, which turns out to be a smart move, considering that Tina is revealed to be a Russian agent. Halfway through the second season, Tina’s true identity is revealed, and while it is a huge shock to everyone, it is particularly heartbreaking for Barry because now, he questions everything about their relationship. Tina doesn’t make it easy on him either because she acts as if it all really was a ruse and that she seduced him because she had planned to turn him into a spy for her people.
Despite this, Barry holds on to hope that she might give him a sign that there was something real between them. After all, she helped save his life when he went into space. She had also helped and saved the team several times in the past, which makes it difficult for him to accept that she was faking love and friendship for them all this time. Eventually, he turns out to be right, and his excitement about it shows that he can’t wait to reunite with Tina and have her confess her feelings for him as well.
FUBAR Season 2 Ends on a Challenging but Hopeful Note for Barry and Tina
With Tina’s cover blown, the Russians try to get her back by trading for her with the Dane, whom they kidnap while Barry and the team are busy with the threat posed by Dante Cress. At first, they think that this is because they want their agent back, but then, they discover there is more to the story. The Dane reveals that while Tina was supposed to be working for the Russians, she stopped giving them important intel a year or so back. This means that she had many occasions to give up Barry and the team, but she didn’t betray them.
While this confirms for Barry that she did actually love him and the team, it also means that she is not safe with the Russians. The Dane thought that Tina was a villain, so he shared the intel about her deliberately lying to her bosses. In this context, the Russians didn’t really trade for their agent, but for the betrayer whom they will want to punish. As soon as Barry realises that, he immediately reaches out to the team to update them on this development and makes it clear that they need to rescue Tina, or the Russians are going to torture and kill her. This means that the next season is most likely going to focus on Barry and the team entering enemy territory to get Tina out. This does not mean that she has been absolved of being the rat and sabotaging the team’s mission on several occasions.
However, the fact that she didn’t give them up to her employers all those times when she easily could have means that there is hope for her working with the team after all. Moreover, now that the Russians know she has betrayed them, she cannot work for them anyway. And with an agent of her calibre, she could turn into quite an asset for the CIA, especially considering that she could share secrets of her Russian employers with them. Considering all this, it is fair to say that while the road ahead is bumpy, there is still hope for Barry and Tina, particularly because he is clearly still in love with him, and she, too, has feelings for him, no matter how much she tries to hide it.
