Is Beatrix Hasp Dead? Did Rhea Perlman Leave Poker Face?

The second season of Peacock’s ‘Poker Face’ comes to an explosive conclusion, as Charlie comes face to face with her most challenging case yet. The last two episodes focus on her trying to help her friend, Alex, who is falsely accused of murdering Kirby Hasp on the day of his wedding. What made Kirby special was the fact that he was the adopted son of Beatrix Hasp, the mob boss who went into hiding at the beginning of the season. Charlie and Alex go to her because she seems to be the only person who can help them now, but in doing so, danger is brought to her door as well. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Beatrix Hasp Becomes the Target Due to Her Deal with the FBI

Before she crossed paths with Charlie Cale, Beatrix Hasp had been having a good run as a mob boss. She worked in collaboration with other mob bosses, and they collectively became the five crime families that rule the underworld. But then, Charlie happened, and everything fell apart. In the third episode of Season 2, Beatrix finds herself in a position where she has no choice but to make a deal with the FBI to save herself. She agrees to testify against the other mob bosses, which means that the whole system is at risk of being dismantled.

While Charlie is finally allowed to walk free with any threats looming over her, the mob bosses realise that the only way they can save themselves is if they kill Beatrix. The problem is that she is being protected by not one, but three government agencies. She has been placed in a safe house, and the key to finding its location has been split between the three agencies such that none of them can find the witness on their own. Despite their influence, the mob bosses cannot get all three keys, which means that they have to look towards other alternatives.

Considering everything, there seems to be only one person who has known Beatrix enough to figure out where she could be hiding. This person is Charlie, and the criminals send a highly trained assassin called Iguana to get her to find Beatrix and kill her. At the end of the penultimate episode, when Charlie drives Alex to Beatrix’s safe house, Luca figures out what is going on. He doesn’t know who the Iguana is, but he knows that they are using Charlie to get to Beatrix so that they can kill her, and the whole case against the others can be scrapped. At first, Charlie doesn’t pay any mind to him, but then, what he told her comes true, and Beatrix is the one to pay dearly for the lie detector’s mistake.

Rhea Perlman’s Beatrix Has Run Her Course on Poker Face

In the Season 2 finale, Charlie figures out where Beatrix is, and she takes Alex along to the safe house. However, Luca turns out to be right when Charlie enters the house, discovers that all the bodyguards are dead, and finds Beatrix on the couch, with a bullet hole in the middle of her forehead. This confirms that she is dead and gone for good. The Iguana got to her, having followed the exact plan that Luca foretold. With her death, the mysterious assassin continues her murderous streak, the mob bosses breathe a sigh of relief because they are not going to jail anytime soon, and the FBI and other government agencies find themselves back at square one now that their star witness is gone.

While Beatrix Hasp, played by Rhea Perlman, was intimidating when she was after Charlie, the show had to let go of her to break the cycle of repetition. This is why Beatrix is killed, which means that Perlman has said goodbye to the role for good. There is a chance that the actress might return to portray the character in a flashback, but considering the turn that the story takes by the end of Season 2, it seems unlikely that the show will revisit her character anytime soon. The Season 2 finale introduces a new villain in Charlie’s story, and to lean into that, Beatrix had to be removed from the equation, as she has served her purpose to the story.
