Bet Season 2: What to Expect if it is Renewed?

The inaugural season of Netflix’s ‘Bet‘ dives into the origin of Yumeko’s revenge story, showcasing how hatred, anger, and guilt have been strong driving forces in her life. After losing her parents at a young age, the high school girl developed a thick skin and an even more resilient attitude towards the challenges in her path, using them as motivating factors to embark on a mission of vengeance. However, season 1 ended with the protagonist realizing that the conspiracy that led to her mom and dad’s death is much larger and insidious in nature than she expected. As such, her actual story may just be starting because of how many people she may have to punish to finally complete her thirst for payback. Thus, the entire narrative is likely to expand moving forward if a potential second season were to become a reality. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Bet Season 2 Could Focus on Yumeko Taking Her Revenge to the Next Level

At the end of the first season, Yumeko learns that the death of her parents was not just the work of one person but several. Keiko and Jo were killed by a group of elite individuals who used to be their friends when they attended St. Dominic’s Prep. They were members of the Kakegurui Club, a clandestine group comprising the school’s student council members who carried out their gambling activities within the halls of the prestigious institute. As members of the Club, Keiko and Jo had access to the secrets of the entire student council. However, this later got them into trouble because they were perceived to have stolen their riches, thereby provoking a hit. Initially, the protagonist believes that the murders were only orchestrated by a man named “Ray,” a false assumption that only tells half the story.

The man named Ray, who Yumeko believes to be her parents’ killer, actually turns out to be the father of Michael, her friend. In the final parts of the first installation, she confronts him at a retreat party, where he reveals the truth behind Keiko and Jo’s murder and how each member of the Kakegurui Club was responsible for the crime while Ray was only the instrument of their desire. Although she kills Ray, fulfilling part of her revenge quest, his words make it evident to her that her crusade for vengeance may be far from over. The protagonist leaves the party swiftly with Ryan’s help. During the car ride, she tells him that she is just getting started with the killing, highlighting the depths of her thirst and how far she is willing to go to ensure everyone who played a role in Keiko and Jo’s death gets what they deserve, setting the stage for a bloodbath in season 2.

Bet Season 2 Will Likely Bring Yumeko’s Mother Into the Mix

The final conversation with Ray also reveals another staggering piece of information that may have huge repercussions heading into a potential season 2. While dying, the man tells Yumeko that despite her staunch beliefs, her parents’ murder incident did not play out exactly as she remembers. Instead, Ray states that Yumeko’s mother survived the ordeal and is still alive today. The news shocks the protagonist, who tries to learn more about it. However, Ray passes away before she can make any more headway into the development. Still, it is easy to see that her mother’s survival plays on her mind throughout the final moments. If Ray is to be believed, it could have enormous implications for Yumeko moving forward. It may even provide the answer behind the missing $30 billion of digital currency that Ray states her parents hid away before they died.

Season 1 only teases the possibility of Yumeko’s mother being alive. However, we are yet to learn why the woman has stayed far away from Yumeko in the intervening years or what compelled her to keep the truth a secret. It is likely that following the Kakegurui Club’s attempt to kill her and her husband, the woman may have felt her life was in danger and believed it was better to stay away from home. In many ways, her returning to Yumeko may have only exacerbated the problem and turned the mother and her young daughter into targets for the Club’s elite socialites. Therefore, she may have stayed away to protect the protagonist’s life, even though it came at a considerable cost. The second season could explore the turbulent nature of their relationship and how Yumeko must have felt abandoned in the period after her parents’ passing.

Bet Season 2 Might Depict Michael’s Transformation From Friend to Enemy

Michael’s transformation as a character is another essential development heading into a potential second season. Although he is shown to be a close friend and supporter of Yumeko’s in season 1, their relationship could be the polar opposite in the second installation because of the protagonist’s actions. After seeing Ray’s slain body at the party, Michael immediately blames Yumeko for the death, certain that she was the one behind the ruthless killing. While he did not have a strong relationship with his dad, Ray’s murder might be the catalyst behind Michael turning against his old pal, throwing him down the same path of vengeance as the main character. Tragically, this has been on the cards since the beginning, especially considering how everything connects back to the Kakegurui Club and the student council.

In season 2, we could see Michael becoming a formidable force of nature, driven by the same vengeful instincts that drive Yumeko. He is likely to blame himself for helping her in the first place. Without his valuable input throughout the first season, the protagonist might have never gotten to the bottom of the truth in time. Therefore, there is a sense of irony in Michael helping Yumeko get closer to completing her revenge pact, which only kickstarts his own descent into a cycle of vengeance. As a result, both characters might be stuck in a chicken and egg situation with cause preceding action and action preceding cause. It means that a potential second installation of the Netflix series could be seen as a battle between friend and friend, raising the personal stakes of the narrative.

A Majority of the Main Cast Will Likely Return For Season 2

With so much hinging on Yumeko, ‘Bet’ season 2 is unlikely to happen without Miku Martineau spearheading the project as the enigmatic protagonist. Fans can also expect the return of Ayo Solanke’s Ryan, whose relationship with Yumeko is finally starting to get somewhere meaningful by the end of season 1, albeit still far from the real deal. Other notable players in season 2 could be Eve Edwards as Mary and Anwen O’Driscoll as Riri, two characters who have found themselves strangely drawn to one another. They will likely play a pivotal role in season 2 as Riri, in particular, has been chosen by her father to serve as the student representative of St. Dominic’s. To that end, her sister Kira will also likely return, with Clara Alexandrova leading the charge. She has new challenges on her horizon now that she has set herself against her father.

As mentioned before, Michael will be integral to the story moving forward. So, it is safe to assume that Hunter Cardinal will reprise his part from season 1, adding even more meat to the bones with a new character journey on his horizon for season 2. We may also see the return of Aviva Mongillo’s Dori, who has a huge crush on Michael and may find herself getting even closer moving forward. Outside the circle of main characters, the second season might also include a plethora of new faces who may join the ranks of St. Dominic’s, bringing more drama and intrigue into the mix. We still don’t know what happened to Yumeko’s mother. However, the second installation could see Yumeko reuniting with her mom, which potentially means the return of Emily Shelton as Keiko.
