Bethany Funke: Where is Maddie Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves’ Roommate Now?

Amazon Prime’s ‘One Night in Idaho: The College Murders’ and Netflix’s ‘The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare’ delve deep into the brutal and mysterious homicide of four University of Idaho students inside an off-campus house in the town of Moscow, Idaho, in November 2022. At the time of the murders, two other roommates were present at the property, including Bethany Funke. Along with Dylan Mortensen, she survived the night of terror, but questions were raised about her alleged involvement and inaction during the crime.

Bethany Funke Survived the Night of Terror That Took the Lives of Her Roommates

In November 2022, Bethany Funke was one of the roommates of Madison “Maddie” Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Dylan Mortensen, all of whom resided in a rented off-campus property at 1122 King Road in Moscow, Idaho. While Maddie, Kaylee, Xana, and Ethan Hunter were killed inside the residence, Bethany and Dylan managed to survive the gruesome ordeal in the early hours of November 13, 2022. According to reports, the two surviving roommates exchanged a bunch of texts around 4 am that morning about a masked intruder. As they both were freaked out and panic-stricken, Bethany texted Dylan to come to her room.

They locked the room and reported the incident to the authorities after about eight hours, around 11:45 am. After the tragedy, Bethany reportedly relocated to Nevada and got away from the spotlight. Several months later, the authorities zeroed in on a suspect named Bryan Kohberger, a Washington State University student. His legal counsel claimed that Bethany had exculpatory knowledge of the fateful night and should be included in the preliminary hearing. Her team argued that Bryan’s attorneys had no evidence to support their claims. In April 2023, Bethany filed a motion to dismiss the subpoena submitted by the defense team of the accused, but agreed to an interview with them in Nevada. She had relocated there following the massacre for both privacy and safety reasons.

Bethany Funke Has Earned a Public Health Degree From the University of Nevada

After moving to Reno, Nevada, Bethany continued her education at the University of Nevada, where she majored in Public Health. She joined the Alpha Tau Omega (ATO), which made her feel at home. Upon being nominated to be an ATO sweetheart as a senior in December 2024, she elaborated on the same, stating, “Although I’ve only been here for a few years, the men of ATO have always made me feel so welcomed and safe. I’m so, so thankful for making some of my best memories with the men of ATO and always having a good time when I am around them. They never fail to put a smile on my face or make me laugh.”

Apart from being an integral part of Alpha Tau Omega, Bethany also made a name for herself at the university through her soccer skills, earning her a spot on the club soccer team. Throughout her journey at the University of Nevada, she made many friends. Bethany said, “I’m also so thankful for the friendships I have made in this chapter because they are one of a kind and I know that they will be lifelong friendships, which makes it even more special. To my favorite chapter ever, thank you for everything!”

Since then, although Bethany has chosen to remain well away from the limelight so as to protect her privacy, she has also made her voice heard. During killer Bryan Kohberger’s sentencing hearing on June 23, 2025, her emotional impact statement was read aloud for everyone to hear by a friend. She detailed what it was like to live through “the worst day of my life” and how it has impacted her to such an extent that she still has trouble sleeping through the night. She made it clear that his actions took 4 innocent lives and traumatized not only the survivors but also all of their families. Coming to Bethany’s current standing, all we know for certain is that she graduated from university in 2025, so today, she is likely pursuing a career in her chosen field of public health.
