Nicky, a pastor, and his public school teacher sister, Morgan, find themselves backed into unfavorable corners in ‘Big Mistakes.’ The siblings’ descent into chaos begins with their dying grandmother’s upcoming birthday. After a store owner, Yusuf, refuses to sell a necklace on display to Morgan, she decides to swipe the jewelry from the store. However, it’s only after the jewels have been put on the woman, after her passing, that she realizes she’s made a big mistake. As it turns out, Yusuf is working for a highly dangerous local criminal, Ivan, who wants the necklace back at any cost. Soon enough, one posthumous jewelry retrieval mission turns into a full-fledged, inadvertent dive into organized crime for Nicky and Morgan. Given the necklace’s inciting role in this misadventure, one can’t help but wonder what exactly was so special about those diamonds? SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Necklace is Connected to a High-Profile Crime Ring
Initially, when Morgan sees the necklace at Yusuf’s store, she assumes it’s part of the merchandise. Therefore, the store owner’s unwillingness to part with it comes across as a rude gesture more than anything. Furthermore, the school teacher is already feeling sore about her spot in the family as a designated disappointment. For the same reason, she decides to snag the necklace to ensure that she can bring a gift for Nonna that her own mother would appreciate. However, this proves to be hers, and by association, Nicky’s undoing. The necklace and Yusuf are both parts of an organized crime ring, which adds new gravity to Morgan’s theft. She doesn’t just need to worry about possible shoplifting charges, but the actual literal mob.

However, for Ivan, Yusuf’s boss, the necklace ends up bringing a different kind of opportunity. In order to make things right, Morgan and Nicky secretly exhume their grandmother from the cemetery in the middle of the night to return the necklace to the crime boss. Inadvertently, in doing so, they end up proving themselves as valuable assets to Ivan. The latter realizes that he can use intimidation and blackmail on the pair to make them do his bidding for the future to come. After all, their upstanding roles in the town’s map, as a pastor and a teacher, give them a certain presumed innocuousness. As such, the necklace ends up becoming the catalyst for the siblings’ foray into the criminal underworld.
The Necklace’s Owner is Revealed to be Someone Close to Morgan and Nicky
After Morgan and Nicky manage to retrieve the necklace for Ivan, the element ends up disappearing from the narrative briefly. Nonetheless, it eventually makes a comeback for a startling reveal. On the night of their mother’s celebration for her mayoral election, Morgan has a chat with Annette in the privacy of her walk-in closet. Annette is closely associated with the protagonists as Linda’s close friend and eventual donor and supporter of her political campaign. Additionally, she’s also the mother of Morgan’s fiancé, Max. Yet, as it turns out, despite being a close family friend, the wealthy woman has also been keeping many secrets from the pair of siblings.

Annette is actually Ivan’s boss, who has been the head of the organized crime operations all this time. The necklace, which brought Morgan and Nicky to their fates, belongs to her. Thus, it becomes clear that while the siblings had been leading their double lives, at least Annette has been aware of their illicit activities thanks to her own presence in criminal circles. Furthermore, she is also the one behind the massacre in Miami, which had miraculously left Morgan and Nicky alive. However, it wasn’t a miracle and instead an intentional choice Annette had made to keep her future daughter-in-law safe. Ultimately, she uses this information as a power play, instilling a new complicated layer to the protagonists’ lives.
