Why is Blood of Zeus Season 4 Not Happening?

The third season of ‘Blood of Zeus‘ concludes the story of Heron, Seraphim, and the Olympian Gods through a bombastic ending to the epic narrative. After unleashing the monstrous Typhon in season 2, our main characters are left with the monumental challenge of defeating the beast before a reign of terror grips the world. To make matters worse, Cronos and his Titan lackeys also enter the fray, determined to enact vengeance against the Gods for their repeated abuse of power and falling into the path of tyranny. With so much at stake, season 3 covers many emotional, character, and plot-related journeys, moving the story towards a natural conclusion. However, it prompts questions regarding its ending and why it wraps up in its third season rather than continuing on a larger quest.

Netflix Chose to End Blood of Zeus With a Third and Final Season

Although originally intended to be a five-season story, ‘Blood of Zeus’ was concluded in its third installment due to Netflix’s decision to cancel the series. According to creators Charley Parlapanides and Vlas Parlapanides, the studio’s choices depend on how many subscribers view a new series over its first month on the platform. It is likely that this became a significant point of discussion when deciding the future of the animated project and the length of its overarching storylines. To that end, the Parlapanides brothers had to focus on tying up their loose ends in a satisfactory manner by the end of season 3. However, this meant that certain ideas that had been put in place from the start had to be taken in a new direction to achieve the goal of a proper conclusion.

In an interview with IndieWire, Charley explained the original five-season arc, stating, “There’s no end-time story in Greek mythology, no Armageddon or Ragnarok, so we thought it would be cool if these five stories build up to what happened to the gods and why they no longer exist. After working on this show all these years, I don’t know if I want to see the end of the world and the gods anymore.” Despite having a much grander concept in store, the brothers had to settle for a shorter story, which they admitted was entirely dependent on “whether we get viewership.” Although the show largely manages to deal with this to a large extent, it does lead to some jarring resolutions to certain storylines. SPOILERS AHEAD.

The Third Season’s Ending Seemingly Runs Into Some Storytelling Issues

For the most part, season 3 ups the ante in almost every aspect as it tries to put Heron and Seraphim at a crossroads in their relationship as half-brothers. Meanwhile, they must also face the wrath of the Titans and Typhon, who are hell-bent on making Olympus pay for their crimes. After a climactic showdown near the end, we learn that both Heron and Seraphim are in the Elysian Fields together. This comes out of nowhere, especially because we never see the latter dying in the final battle. It is likely that the creative team had more plans for Seraphim that went beyond season 3, making his redemptive journey the focus of the latter seasons. However, while they achieve the second part of the journey to a reasonable degree, Seraphim’s death is a mysterious development that arrives out of seemingly nowhere.

The final moments also do not address a number of key characters, such as Alexia, Hades, and Persephone, and how they move on after everything that takes place. The signs of an abrupt ending rears its head in those moments specifically. However, it is also worth noting that, on the whole, season 3 captures the essence of the drama and provides a fitting ending for all the characters involved especially Heron and Seraphim. As the central pieces within the narrative, they are the heart of the drama and its emotional core. As such, a conclusion to their stories is pivotal to the show’s ending and how it leaves things for everyone else. While certain storylines and characters are omitted near the end, the conclusion brings the whole thing together in one final swansong for our beloved characters.
