When Robert “Bob” Joseph Dorotik was found dead on the side of a road several miles from his Valley Center home in San Diego, California, the entire nation was left baffled to the core. What’s more is that his wife of around 30 years was actually arrested for his murder not long after, following which she spent over 2 decades fighting for her freedom – the charges against her were dismissed in 2022. However, as explored in CBS’ ’48 Hours: The Troubled Case Against Jane Dorotik,’ the couple’s three kids suffered a lot too, especially as they couldn’t rely on one another owing to differing views over what transpired.
Alex Dorotik Currently Prefers to Lead a Quiet Life
Alex Dorotik was reportedly born to Jane and Bob Dorotik when they were in their mid-20s as the eldest of their three children, meaning he saw almost all the ups and downs of their lives. Therefore, when his mother was accused of killing his father shortly after he was found on the basis of circumstantial evidence as well as the bloodstains in their bedroom, he came to believe she really was responsible. In fact, he testified against her during her 2001 trial, stating she wasn’t one to settle things logically before adding that he remembers several fights and threats of divorce between his parents while he was growing up.
Since then, Alex has understandably chosen to remain well away from the limelight for privacy reasons, but from what we can positively ascertain, he is currently based in Arvada, Colorado. He actually graduated from the University of Denver – Sturm College of Law in 2002 with his Juris Doctorate, following which he kickstarted his career at the Adams County District Attorney’s Office. Then, in 2017, he evolved into an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Englewood and then moved on to serve as the Deputy City Attorney for the City of Lakewood in 2021 for another 3+ years. Now, though, he proudly holds the title of Managing Attorney at a full-service law firm called Ingenuity Law Colorado.
Claire Dorotik Has Found Her Calling as an Athlete, Family Therapist, and Writer
When Bob was killed in February 2000, 24-year-old Claire was still residing at the family ranch alongside her parents, considering she was an equestrian and preferred to be around her horses. However, on the fateful Valentine’s weekend, the marathon runner, personal trainer, and sports enthusiast had been visiting her aunt miles away, so she returned home to a complex situation. She quickly realized something terrible had happened, but even as the circumstantial evidence started coming to light, she never once thought of her mother as anything but completely innocent. Later on, during Jane’s trial, her defense attorney actually accused Claire of being the killer herself, but it truly led nowhere.
According to reports, Jane never believed in this claim, but she went along with her attorney’s advice, and it fortunately didn’t really affect the close relationship she shared with Claire. The latter once penned, “How could I be angry at my mother (for agreeing to this defense strategy for her trial), when all I did was worry about her,” which is a sentiment she still maintains. In terms of other aspects of her personal standing, it appears as if she currently resides in Tavares, Florida, with her husband, Andrei Nana, whom she has been with since at least the fall of 2013. He is a proud Attorney, Minister, K9 service entrepreneur, Manager of the US Spartathlon Team, Founder of Nana Endurance Training, and Administrator/Ground Trainer at Nana Equestrian Training.
Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Claire and her husband often spend a lot of quality time together riding horses, running marathons, or caring for their two dogs: Athos and Portos. The now 50-year-old herself has run over 40 marathons, a handful of 50-mile races, and around ten 100-mile races since 2001, all of which were in honor of her father to keep his memories alive. On a more professional level, as a 2002 Kinesiology graduate from San Diego State University and a 2005 Marriage and Family Therapy graduate from San Diego University of Integrative Studies, she currently primarily serves as a therapist as well as a writer.
In fact, after years as a biomechanics and wellness consultant who created different programs for the US International University, Nokia Corporation, and Bally Total Fitness, Claire Nana is now a staff psychotherapist. She works at Live In Fitness, where she specializes in body image issues as well as post-traumatic growth. With years of experience with clients struggling with addictions, weight loss, mood disorders, and sports adjustment issues, she also continues to develop courses for the International Sport Science Association and accredited personal trainers. As for her standing as a writer, this outdoorswoman is the author of ‘On the Back of a Horse: Harnessing the Healing Power of the Human-Equine Bond’ (2011) and ‘Leverage: The Science of Turning Setbacks into Springboards.’ She also writes for the Zur Institute and Professional Development Resources.
Nick Dorotik Sadly Passed Away in 2023
Born on July 30, 1977, as the youngest of Jane and Bob Dorotik, Nicholas “Nick” Phillip Dorotik actually shared the same sentiments as his brother when his father was found murdered. Like Alex, he also testified against their mother during her 2001 trial, whereas Claire pleaded the fifth, which resulted in Jane being convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. She was released on parole in 2020 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, only for her conviction to be overturned as well as the charges against her to be dismissed without prejudice in May 2022. By this point, though, Nick had moved forward in life while keeping the memories of his father alive in his heart – he had settled in Aurora, Colorado, as a happily married father of 1 and an entrepreneur.
As a graduate of San Diego Mesa College, by the spring of 2022, Nick was a proud employee of the Mangotime Resort and the co-owner of Blue Sky Solar and Roofing. But alas, the rug was pulled from under him and his family on May 7, 2023, as the 45-year-old was found dead in his home – he had died as a result of a mixed drug overdose, including fentanyl and meth. His wife, Kathy, had administered a dose of Narcan upon finding him unconscious before first responders arrived, and the South Metro Fire Rescue also administered CPR later, but to no avail. He was pronounced dead at the scene, but he is survived by his mother, his siblings, his wife, and their son Ryan, who are moving forward by keeping his memories alive in their hearts.
We should mention that in November 2024, Max Arsenault and Julia Weishaar were arrested in connection with Nick’s death. They have been charged with: manslaughter, conspiracy to distribute fentanyl causing death, distribution of a controlled substance (fentanyl) resulting in death, distribution of a controlled substance (meth), conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance (meth), distribution of a controlled substance (fentanyl), conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance (fentanyl), 2 counts of distribution of a schedule 3 and 4 controlled substance, and 2 counts of conspiracy to distribute a schedule 3 and 4 controlled substance. Max and Julia are currently awaiting trial.
