After the semi-cliffhanger ending to season 2, ‘Bosch: Legacy‘ returns to a gripping tale of personal and professional conflict in the third season, with Harry Bosch finding himself at the center of an investigation that threatens to pull his life apart. The first two episodes, titled ‘Goes Where it Goes’ and ‘Bosching Bosch,’ show the titular lead grappling with some complex cases while also trying to find the right balance with his daughter, Maddie, who has her own hands full. With a new robbery gang on the loose and terrorizing the neighborhoods, Maddie and Vasquez have to combine efforts to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding this masked group. At the same time, Honey tries to weave her way through the intricate politics of Los Angeles, California, while also occasionally running into some unedifying business. SPOILERS AHEAD.
A Familiar Face Threatens Honey’s New Political Campaign
Episode 1 takes place eight months after the events of season 2 as Honey’s new campaign to be DA gets off to the mark. She gives a speech in front of the City Hall, which is spied on by Emmett Archer, her rival, from a distance. Subsequently, the LAPD, alongside Archer and Chief Hughes, sanctions an investigation into Preston Borders’ phone call to Maddie Bosch, insinuating that Harry Bosch had something to do with Dockweiler’s death. The case is led by Detective Jimmy Robertson, a member of the Hollywood Division from the previous series, and his fledgling partner, Perry Lopez. In a quiet neighborhood, Bosch meets with Curtis Dignan, his trusted informer, who tells him nothing has been tied to Kurt Dockweiler’s death yet. Meanwhile, Maddie and Vasquez respond to a 911 call, which turns out to be a robbery at gunpoint.
Following the events of the previous season, Maddie and Bosch are shown to have a strong relationship. We learn that her father’s explanation for Preston’s phone call was something he put down to as the inmate “yanking his chain.” After her City Hall speech, Honey returns to her campaign office, where a mysterious man asks to meet her. It turns out to be Frankie Sheehan, a character from the original ‘Bosch’ whose career was dismantled by Honey. They have a tense meeting, where Honey learns that Frankie may be out to seek revenge against her. She informs Bosch about the meeting. He tries to allay any concerns about the incident. However, Mo digs into digital records and finds that Frankie has been stalking Honey everywhere she goes. Meanwhile, Robertson and Lopez carry on their investigation into Preston’s phone call at the prison, retrieving the call logs.
Back at the campaign office, Honey prepares to rebut Emmett Archer’s dismantling of her campaign through a commercial of her own. The meeting is abruptly cut short when Michelle, her daughter and assistant, informs her that her car alarm has been triggered. They find that a brick has been smashed through the front window of the car. Bosch is brought in as the security consultant. He tells Honey to call the cops and let them deal with the situation. She is hesitant because of her lack of popularity with them, but she agrees nonetheless. Subsequently, Bosch follows up with Frankie Sheehan’s ex-wife to find out more about him and what he has been up to since his prison release. She says he stopped by a few days prior to pick up some sentimental things.
Bosch Comes to Honey’s Rescue as Frankie’s Plan is Put in Motion
After some digging, Bosch tracks down Frankie, and the two run into each other at Callahan’s Hardware. The latter feigns ignorance when Bosch tells him about him stalking Honey. Elsewhere, Honey attends a meeting with a bunch of victims, which helps her gain more of a perspective on the system she is trying to be a part of. Cops at the LAPD scoff at the request by Honey’s security team to lend more cops to their latest charity fundraiser event at Plaza de la Raza. They decide to hand it off to another branch. Meanwhile, Bosch and Mo break into Frankie’s home to see what they can find. Everything is squeaky clean except for some evidence that Frankie is struggling to connect with his son, Liam. They also find a binder on LAPD Mactac – a special unit based around counter-terrorism efforts. Bosch is worried that Frankie is planning to leave his mortal coil and take people with him.
Once more, we follow Frankie as he enters an empty warehouse space with a bag. Elsewhere, Robertson and Lopez present their findings of the call logs to Emmett Archer, stating that Preston was sending calls to a burner phone located in the Hollywood Hills area. The only person they know who lives there is Harry Bosch. Bosch oversees the security efforts at Plaza de la Raza as Honey’s fundraiser gets underway. The cops are more concerned about protecting Mayor Susanna Lopez’s life. As the mayor arrives and the event gets into full swing, Bosch monitors the entire area with Mo, Vasquez, and Maddie helping him out alongside the small contingent of cops. He also has an eye on Frankie Sheehan’s apartment in case the man leaves the house. Unbeknownst to them, Frankie had already left his home via a fire exit knowing that Bosch may be keeping an eye.
We see Frankie break into Plaza de la Raza from another entrance and make his way to the roof. He sets up some empty blanks as a distraction. In the ensuing pandemonium, he slips into the theater building, knowing that it is where the safe room is located and Honey will be brought in. Bosch catches on to Frankie’s plan and tells Maddie to take Honey elsewhere. He then corners him inside the building. The two face off each other at gunpoint, where Bosch tries to talk his former partner out of doing something regrettable. He also urges him to think about reconnecting with his son, Liam. While it seems like the situation is diffused, Frankie surprises Bosch by pointing the gun at his own head and pulling the trigger. Maddie and Vasquez arrive soon after and find Frankie’s unresponsive body and a distraught Bosch keeping him company.
Maddie Faces New Doubts About Her Father
Episode 2 begins with the funeral of one of Bosch’s former army comrades – Josh Brady. Bosch sits down with an old pal from the military for some war stories at the bar. Maddie is stoked to learn more about her dad but also slightly worried. A woman named Siobhan Murphy comes in to ask Bosch’s help. Apparently, her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandkids have disappeared without a trace. She needs Bosch’s help to track them down. Robertson and Perry Lopez continue their investigation into Dockweiler’s murder. They learn from James Rafferty, Dockweiler’s attorney, that Bosch attacked his client in the interrogation room, but there is no camera footage. Maddie visits Honey following a dinner party at the latter’s house for her supporters. Honey’s polls have been steadily climbing since her run-in with Frankie Sheehan in the previous episode.
Worried about her dad, Maddie allays her fears to Honey, especially after hearing the grisly war tale about him from his old pal. Honey tells Maddie not to judge her father too harshly. Meanwhile, a woman eyes a bunch of guests at a high-end restaurant before a car pulls up outside. She gets in and tells the two men inside to start driving. We learn that they are the ones behind the string of robberies. One of them is called Nestor. Robertson and Lopez question Sergeant John Mankiewicz, the watch commander who was responsible for keeping an eye on everything the night Bosch allegedly attacked Dockweiler during interrogation. After some push and pull, Robertson corners Mankiewicz and manages to get his hands on the video tapes from the night. When studying the recording, he sees that Bosch threatened Dockweiler in order to get to his daughter.
Meanwhile, Bosch gets a call from Honey while looking into Siobhan’s missing persons case. Honey wants Bosch to ascertain that the LAPD treated her differently when responding to her claims for increased security at the Plaza de la Raza. He agrees to look into it. Bosch meets up with the detective in charge of the missing persons’ case. According to him, they think Steven Gallagher and his family fled from the grid because of failing business dealings. At the campaign office, Honey is informed about a huge benefactor coming to town named Lisa Brode, who is a big supporter of Archer’s. Because she is a progressive, her counsel suggests that Honey could use her daughter’s “biracial genetics” to win favor for her mom, which is basically a roundabout way of employing racial identity as a political move. Honey is dead set against the idea.
The Robbers Face a Hitch While Robertson and Lopez Bend the Rules
During a patrol round, Vasquez and Maddie flag down a car that matches the description of the one being used by the robbers. The driver turns out to be the same woman from earlier who is the ringleader of the operation. After a tense conversation in Spanish, Vasquez lets her off with a ticket, albeit suspicious of the woman. Detective Robertson and Lopez take some time off at a bar as they go over what to do with the footage they uncovered about Bosch. Robertson states that they need to use Bosch’s tactics against him if they want to actually catch him. Subsequently, they break into his home office to rifle through anything important. Eventually, they find a thank you note from Curtis Dignan. Bosch and Siobhan visit Gallagher’s private residence, where they also run into Mo. The latter greets Siobhan before heading off to check in with the neighbors and if they caught anything.
After some time, Mo returns with some CCTV footage showing the Gallaghers leaving the home together in a van. Siobhan comments that her granddaughter Carrie loves to carry a blanket she wove for her everywhere she goes. Elsewhere, Maddie and Vasquez bring in the victims from the first theft to go over some possible culprits – one of them includes Nestor. They are unable to make any suggestions because the night was a blur for them. The woman who got pulled over by the two cops reaches home and is greeted by Nestor and her boyfriend. She informs them that they can no longer use the same car when pulling their heists. She plans to procure a new car somehow. At the same time, Honey meets up with Lisa Brode at a posh restaurant. The two get down to business quickly, but it seems that Lisa is still set on supporting Archer.
The Investigation Heats Up as Bosch Tries to Find Siobhan’s Grandkids
With Honey struggling to win over Lisa through normal means of charming her guest, Michelle arrives out of nowhere and helps her mother curry more favor. Eventually, Honey is able to win over Lisa. The former tells her daughter that she does not like her being used as a political pawn. However, Michelle is fine with it and considers herself up to the task. Bosch has a meeting with Mankiewicz at a local bar. He asks him about the policing situation in Honey’s event and why there were so few cops provided. Mankiewicz tells Bosch that it was because Thorn stopped the cops from being sent over. He also decides to keep mum about the fact that he gave up the incriminating video footage. Bosch tracks down Thorne and threatens to out him, but the latter is the least bit concerned.
In the meantime, Robertson and Lopez track down Preston’s wife. However, she ignores them and walks away after a few questions. Honey arranges an appointment with Chief Hughes, trying to leverage the fact that adequate security was not provided to her during the Frank Sheehan incident. She asks Hughes to help her raise her popularity among the departments. However, Hughes remains stubborn and tells Honey to go public with her information. Robertson and Lopez visit Maddie to question her regarding Preston’s phone call and why she never reported the possible insinuation of her father’s involvement in Dockweiler’s death to the police. She says she was too traumatized to think of anything else once she heard Dockweiler’s name. The detectives leave, but Maddie is evidently shaken.
At the same time, Bosch and Siobhan visit the second property owned by the Gallaghers, which is in the middle of the woods. They team up with Sheriff Beto Orestes and scour the interior. Bosch recovers Carrie’s so-called favorite blanket in a closet upstairs. However, there is no sign of the family anywhere.
