If things weren’t messy before, they certainly are now in episodes 3 and 4 of ‘Bosch: Legacy’ season 3, titled ‘Blankie’ and ‘Whippoorwills.’ Harry Bosch’s reputation hangs by a thread as the investigation led by Robertson and Lopez threatens to tear his relationships apart, including the one he has with his daughter Maddie. An increased interest in Honey’s political campaign also comes to bite her as her association with the titular protagonist leaves her in a difficult spot. However, the problems are only surfacing as Bosch navigates matters in his personal life while also trying to focus on what happened to the Gallaghers and finding answers for Siobhan. The case takes on a new dimension as we get closer to the truth and the responsible party behind the incident. SPOILERS AHEAD.
The Gallagher Case Begins to Show Signs of Serious Foul Play
The episode begins with a one-month-old flashback in which we see Carrie wake up in the middle of the night. A mysterious figure follows her upstairs to the closet and whisks her away, leaving her blanket behind. In the present day, Harry Bosch and Beto Orestes watch over the police scouring out the house for evidence. They suspect something terrible might have happened, especially considering how Carrie never leaves her blanket behind. Bosch relays positive messages to Siobhan at a restaurant later, telling her to hold on to hope. When he calls Maddie up later from his home, he senses that his daughter is keeping something from him. Elsewhere, Detective Robertson and Lopez have got their hands on bank records that show Bosch transferring out the same amount of money that is being put into Borders’ account. A concrete link has yet to be established.
Maddie vaguely tells Vasquez about the investigation into her dad. The latter tells her that she is happy being ignorant of the situation as it makes it easier not to lie later. Bosch, meanwhile, gets acquainted with Steven Gallagher’s business associates – Sheila Walsh and Finbar McShane. He interviews them separately to get their views on Gallagher’s financial problems and their roles in the company. At the same time, Honey gets ready for a debate on the radio while Robertson and Lopez sit down with Borders. They show Borders how much they know about his illicit phone calls with an unknown stranger. He promises to spill his secrets if the detectives arrange a meeting with the DA. They discuss it with Emmett Archer while Bosch rings up Siobhan to talk to her about her putting up missing person fliers. He urges her to come back to LA as her efforts are not needed.
After some light digging, Mo informs Bosch about a former employer at Gallagher’s company named Justin Boatman – he is Walsh’s son. It turns out he has a history of criminal offenses and drug problems. Bosch confronts him and asks him why he was fired. He explains and states that something shady is afoot at the Gallaghers company – implying a bigger conspiracy at play. Elsewhere, we witness our robber girl, Victoria, selling her stolen loot at a store. Bosch shows up at Gallagher’s office once more and confronts Walsh about keeping her son’s identity a secret. He is trying to “shake up the tree” as he plants a bug in the room before leaving. Back in their apartment, Victoria splits the profit from the loot with her partners. However, they only receive half of what she does. They are unhappy about the distribution and talk about upping their game.
Bosch’s Investigation Goes Public as Finbar Makes Contact With a Shady Party
During Archer and Honey’s radio debate, the former gets cornered and desperately reveals the truth about the ongoing investigation into Bosch. The detective hears the news live on air and makes preparations. A subpoena is handed to him right as he steps out the door. He then goes on an excursion trip to Maddie’s house, where he learns she was visited by Robertson and Lopez, and Honey’s residence, where he tells her about the subpoena. Borders calls his wife, Rita, to talk to her about something. We watch her meet up with a couple of strangers afterward. In the midst of his new problems, Bosch receives an audio file from a conversation between Finbar and Walsh. They mention a guy they are dealing with who sounds really dangerous. A meeting has been set up for the following night.
Bosch meets up with Curtis Dignan, telling him to maintain his silence as the authorities will soon come for them. Robertson and Lopez monitor the conversation from far away. Victoria and her gang stake out a high-end restaurant for a job. However, she pings them, stating that the mission is a no-go. Frustrated with their lack of action, the other two decide to hit a woman who gets in a black car. Victoria watches from afar as they drive away. The duo manages to corner the couple and steal their necklaces, but not without gunfire. They eventually escape before things get bad. Maddie and Vasquez pick up the case the next morning, learning that one of the robbers is called Flaco, a common name. Elsewhere, Honey’s poll numbers are dropping while Bosch and Mo stake out Finbar’s meeting with the “dangerous man.” The deal goes smoothly, but something feels off about the whole affair.
Honey gets in touch with her contact inside Archer’s campaign, asking him to find out what he has on Bosch. The episode ends with another flashback to a month prior as the unknown assailant drives the entire Gallagher family, who are tied up in the back, to a secluded spot in the middle of nowhere. He then stops the car and moves to the back to pick up Carrie. The parents scream in desperation, but their daughter is taken away.
The Walls Close in On Bosch as Rifts are Born
With the Bosch case heating up, Detective Robertson and Lopez flag down Curtis Dignan and take him in for questioning. Meanwhile, Mo informs Bosch about the man Finbar was meeting with the other night – his name is Bing, a former gangster who has reinvented himself as some type of businessman. At the same time, Honey faces pressure from her campaign councilors to drop her association with Bosch as it could harm their polls. The walls are closing in on everyone, especially Dignan, who is grilled by Robertson and Lopez in the police interrogation room. They want Dignan to wear a wire as he goes back to talk to Bosch, which he refuses. Worried about the polls, Honey calls up Porter to seek assurances that the Times editorial board won’t stop backing her campaign. Once the call is over, she receives a text from her contact inside Archer’s office.
Honey rings up Bosch, stating that Archer has records of transactions between him and Borders. The detective maintains his innocence, even after Honey asks him if he is hiding something. Subsequently, he calls his daughter, who chooses not to pick up because she is still mad at her father for the secrets he keeps buried in his past. Mo goes on a fishing expedition at Bing’s yard, disguising himself as an internet repair guy and getting information directly from the ex-gangster’s computer, which he reroutes to himself. In the meantime, Borders gets picked up from prison by Robertson and Lopez, who try to get in his head about Dignan spilling the beans on him. However, he sticks to his guns and states that he will only come forward with the truth once he has his meeting with the DA. Honey tries to get more leverage with the editorial board as she arranges another meeting.
Maddie and Vasquez track down a local tattoo artist, who they believe might have some clues about the robbers. Although the woman is initially hesitant, she speaks candidly about their slick operation. As night falls over proceedings, Bosch ambushes Bing in his yard. The protagonist wants to know about Bing’s connection to the Gallaghers’ disappearance. However, he seems to have nothing to do with it. Bosch visits Walsh next, confronting her about her connection to Bing. She states that she would do anything to keep the business afloat while Maddie and Vasquez make a huge discovery in relation to the car being used by the robbers. As Borders is wheeled into the Justice building, his wife Rita greets him as the car passes by. She then turns to the opposite side of the street to signal something to the unknown man from before. Subsequently, Bosch’s court trial kicks off.
A Heart-Racing Showdown Unfolds as Borders Shows His True Colors
Finbar visits Siobhan and asks her what Bosch knows about the Gallaghers thus far. He seems a bit shaken by the fact that the detective has dismissed the idea of the family moving to Mexico. While walking through the station halls, Maddie runs into Chris, the public defender she had her eye on during the Plaza De La Raza incident. They have a flirtatious encounter before she meets up with Mankiewicz, who pulls her aside and informs her that an IA investigation is around the corner and she is the one being investigated. The court brings in Borders for questioning. He remains cryptic as usual about the identity of the mysterious second caller on his burner phone. At the Times editorial board meeting, Honey raises the fact that Archer is trying to be cheap in dismantling her campaign. However, it is hard to convince them with Bosch’s reputation hanging by a thread.
While stepping out of the court, Bosch notices Rita Tedesco walking around the building front. He informs Robertson and Lopez about her presence, stating that they are being played. They remain unfazed as he goes back out. Meanwhile, Walsh digs into Finbar’s accounts by sneaking into his office. She finds some shady transactions, which confirms that he may have something to do with the Gallaghers. She leaves a voice message on Bosch’s phone just as Finbar arrives at the office. During a stakeout mission, Maddie tells Vasquez about the IA investigation. The latter then agrees to hear what got her partner embroiled in such a conspiracy. Maddie tells her about Borders’ phone call to her dad, which leaves Vasquez frustrated. She tells Maddie to stop thinking about her dad and protect her career first, especially if she gets tied into his mess for no reason.
Outside the court, Bosch keeps an eye on Rita as she gets into her car. He observes a set of signals being relayed between her car and the car behind him. As Robertson and Lopez take off from the court with Borders, the two cars start following them while Bosch keeps pace behind. After a while, a vehicle crashes into Robertson and Lopez out of nowhere. It is a staged attempt to get Borders out of prison. He gets out of the car and is taken in by his men. However, Bosch interferes, and a shootout ensues. Eventually, Robertson and Lopez join in to take down the other henchmen. Bosch follows Borders to an abandoned warehouse. The latter corners him and prepares to kill him after stating that the protagonist should be thankful to him. Robertson arrives in time to kill Borders. Subsequently, the two shake hands as they realize they both got played.
Rita waits for her husband to arrive, but she is only left hanging. Elsewhere, Honey brings down Archer’s support as the debacle of the Borders case reaches his office. As Maddie hugs her dad after the intense gun show, Bosch receives the voice message left behind by Walsh. He arrives at the Gallagher store to check on her but senses something off when the whole place is dead still. He heads upstairs with his gun in hand only to find Walsh’s dead body lying on the floor of Finbar’s office. The latter’s guilt is now assured as Bosch sets down to resolve the matter once and for all.
