With each episode, ‘Bosch: Legacy‘ season 3 has been diving into a bigger spiral of chaos, leaving our main characters to play catch-up. Such is the case in episodes 5 and 6, titled ‘F***ing Politics’ and ‘Broken Order,’ where we get the season’s most shocking and jaw-dropping moment. After the mess from the previous episodes, fans might have expected a little respite, especially as Bosch tries to track down the one responsible for the Gallagher disappearance and Sheila Walsh’s murder. However, more complex situations arise out of left field, leaving everyone confused and jarred about what to do. Meanwhile, the follow-home robberies also take on an interesting flavor as an unforeseen connection blurs the lines between right and wrong moving forward. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Bosch Tells Maddie the Whole Truth About Borders’ Call
Episode 5 begins with the cops bagging Sheila Walsh’s body as Bosch talks with the lead investigator outside. The police think that Walsh’s death is separate from the Gallaghers’ disappearance, which frustrates the protagonist. He believes that they should be looking for Finbar McShane, who gets inside a hidden compartment inside a truck and leaves town. The following morning, Bosch investigates his house’s exteriors, eventually locating a burner phone attached to the bottom of his crib. He relays the information to Detective Robertson, who agrees to look into it and clear Bosch’s name from the investigation. Meanwhile, Honey promotes her campaign to a group of diner customers in the town. The owner of the shop, Dennis Williams, alleges that his son Shawn died in an armed robbery incident, which the attorney agrees to look into.
At the police precinct, Maddie attends her IA interview, offering a prepared statement where she honestly speaks about Borders’ phone call to her dad. She is willing to accept any punishment for her decision not to report the incident to the cops. Bosch meets her outside, where he finally tells her how he is involved in the incident. He reveals that he told one of his CIs (Curtis Dignan) to make Kurt Dockweiler as miserable as possible while stuck in prison. Borders used it to his advantage and tried to frame the protagonist for killing Dockweiler instead. Elsewhere, Robertson and Lopez sit down with Emmett Archer and ask his permission to clear Bosch’s name from the investigation. However, Archer wants them to take some time off as he wants Bosch’s reputation sullied to help him with the election campaign.
Office Politics Interfere in Robertson and Lopez’s Investigation
Bosch and Mo believe that Finbar killed the entire Gallagher family close to their home and buried them using a backhoe. In the station, Vasquez tracks down a lead relating to the follow-home robbers, which she imparts to Maddie. A man named Reed Lewis, who runs a music studio named Find Your Grind, could be the group’s fence. They question him regarding the robberies and eventually manage to get a name from his lips – Fortune, the lead woman in charge of the operation, who we know as Victoria. Maddie and Vasquez order him to contact them if Fortune calls him. In the meantime, Bosch visits Bing’s yard, where he tells the latter about Finbar’s potential involvement in the Gallagher case. Bing leads the detective to the backhoe that might have been used in the burial. While it has been scraped clean, the tracker on the device may be of use to Bosch.
Robertson and Lopez use their allocated “vacation time” to investigate the Borders case further. They track down a delivery service, where they manage to recover information that could lead them to Rita Tedesco, the wife of Borders, who was an integral part of the escape plan. Meanwhile, Michelle finds out that Dennis Williams’ son died due to an overdose and not an armed robbery. Honey asks her daughter to keep probing. At the same time, Mo uses the backhoe tracker to find out where it was moved on the night of the Gallaghers’ disappearance while Robertson and Lopez visit the address they found in the delivery service shop. They find a bunch of trailer residences inside. Eventually, Rita steps out of one of them, holding a gun. The two detectives urge her to stand down before taking her into custody.
In the police station, Robertson and Lopez insist on questioning Rita and clearing up Bosch as soon as possible. However, they want Archer out of the way first. After questioning Rita about whether Bosch was involved in Borders’ death, they get a definitive answer – no. Across town, Victoria changes out the plates for the robbery car with the help of her boyfriend, Albert. As he carries out his task, she calls up Reed, expressing her intention to stop by his place soon. Reed immediately informs Maddie and Vasquez about the meeting. In her campaign office, Honey urges her volunteers to push one last time before she heads off to meet Dennis Williams. The shopkeeper tells her that his son was injected with drugs by an influential figure who was never investigated by the cops. Honey recognizes the man as Patrick Currey, a city councilor.
Bosch Confirms the Gallaghers’ Tragic Fate Before a Shocking Death
Bosch and Mo use the tracker data to discover the burial spot for the Gallaghers while Robertson meets up with the Times reporter, Scott Anderson, whom he offers a report on the Bosch-Borders case. Elsewhere, Victoria and Albert realize that the cops have their eyes on them and drive past Reed’s shop. They set up the cops for a fake 911 call while fleeing themselves. She tells Albert that they have to lay low for now. Meanwhile, investigators dig up the bodies of the Gallaghers from the ground. Bosch identifies the bodies before breaking the news to Siobhan Murphy. The case soon becomes public knowledge, and Maddie visits her dad, who is dejected after seeing the Gallaghers’ remains. On election night, an anxious Honey is encouraged by Michelle, who reminds her mother of her strength.
Near the episode’s end, we have two shocking twists as we learn that Albert is Vasquez’s nephew. The boy shows up at a family dinner at the Vasquez household, where she embraces him. In the meantime, Maddie and Chris Downey engage in some light, flirtatious banter at Honey’s election night party. Honey eventually learns from the supervisor that she has been elected as the new DA of Los Angeles. As celebrations ensue, Robertson and Bosch come clean about their reasons for doing what they did. They have a respectful parting as news of Honey’s appointment grows public. The second big twist of the episode surfaces in the final moments as Robertson stops by a fast food stall for some Barbacoa Tacos. A masked robber shows up out of nowhere and shoots Robertson in the head. As his blood pools on the curb, the screen cuts to black.
The City of Los Angeles Reacts to the Passing of Detective Robertson
One month after Detective Robertson’s murder, the police capture a man named Diego Perra, who they believe is the main perpetrator behind the crime. As Honey announces the news in a press conference, the people of LA rejoice at the fact that Robertson’s killer is finally behind bars. Bosch is still upset about his former colleague’s passing. However, he gets on with the Gallagher case. Meanwhile, Honey uses her powers as the DA to sanction an undercover cop to be planted in the same cell as Perra to find out more about Robertson’s murder. During the monitoring exercise, we learn that Perra believes himself to be innocent, even though the groundswell of opinion is well and truly stacked against him. Honey orders her legal team to build an airtight case before Perra is charged – they are led by Corvus Pike and Raquel Bowers.
Elsewhere, Victoria and the home-robbers are laying low as planned. However, Nestor is getting restless and wants more action. Victoria allows them to sell their current haul to new sellers around town. In the meantime, Honey meets with Perra’s lawyer, L. Roman Stallworth, who shows her a video of his client entering the house in a highly inebriated state and leaving it a few minutes later completely sober. Worried about what the evidence means, Honey consults with Bosch, who agrees to have a look into it. At the same time, Mo also tells her more about Patrick Currey, who the DA is looking into after talks with Dennis Williams. Across town, Nestor tries to sell a watch to a shopkeeper who recognizes the device as stolen property. She informs Maddie and Vasquez about it, even providing them with a picture of Nestor.
Bosch Finds Discrepancies While Vasquez Learns Something Startling
Bosch begins constructing a timeline of Robertson’s murder as he goes around questioning people on the ground. After conducting numerous interviews, he realizes that the cops missed out on one key witness – Jason Swift. He tracks down the man and interrogates him about the murder. Bosch learns that Robertson did nothing threatening during the encounter to compel Perra to pull the trigger, especially considering his otherwise clean history of no murders. In the DA’s office, Honey gets into a beef with Corvus and Raquel about Perra’s case and the diligence she wants them to showcase before any charges are filed against the man. Pike accuses her of trying too hard to make a difference now that she has Archer’s post. She informs them that she is willing to increase resources if necessary as long as the right processes are maintained.
Maddie and Vasquez visit Victoria’s parents’ restaurant, where they sit down with the girl to talk to her about her ties with Nestor. Although she maintains her innocence throughout the interrogation, she is spooked by the encounter. It also allows the cops to tap into her phone. Meanwhile, Bosch establishes that the CCTV cameras around Robertson’s murder spot were coincidentally turned off, which makes it hard to corroborate anything the PI learns on the case. He hypothesizes that the cameras were tampered with by the killer. Subsequently, he meets up with Siobhan at the Gallagher residence, where the woman expresses her sadness at the fact that her entire family is now gone. She is planning to leave for Dublin, Ireland, soon. Bosch feels like he has let her down, which she assures him he hasn’t.
Mo promises to break into some federal files to get more information on McShane’s dealings. Bosch leaves it up to his tech guy to figure out the problem. The cops get a notification from Victoria’s wiretapped phone that she is planning on meeting someone at Lemon Grove Park later. Maddie and Vasquez decide to go on a stakeout mission. At the park, they identify Victoria as she speaks with a hooded figure, Albert. Once their conversation is over, Albert takes off the hood, allowing Vasquez to realize that her nephew is caught up in this entire incident. She keeps the information from Maddie as they return to the car. Elsewhere, Bosch tells Honey about what he has learned about Robertson’s death. He believes that the detective’s death was a well-crafted assassination.
