Cassy Marie Farrington was a 23-year-old nurse and a loving mother of two, residing at a rented house in Silver City, New Mexico. However, the tight-knit community was left shocked when she was found brutally killed inside the home in March 2014. Her death had also left her family and friends completely heartbroken, which further came under the spotlight through in-depth interviews with her loved ones in the episode.
Cassy Farrington’s Life Revolved Around Her Career and Family
Marc “Chuck” and Darlene Brooks were overjoyed to welcome their daughter, Cassy Marie Brooks, into their lives on December 22, 1990. She grew up in Safford, Arizona, sharing a close bond with her siblings, Eric, CodyBo, and Elizabeth Brooks. Cassy enjoyed going on camping trips with her family, dancing, and reading books. She had always been an excellent student and graduated from a high school in Pima within just 3 years. During her time there, she was a proud member of the National Honor Society and FBLA. Moreover, she actively played sports such as softball, basketball, and volleyball, and was part of the summer swim team.
Besides taking dance classes for 5 years, Cassy also made a name for herself as the winner of the Mini Miss Graham County title. By her freshman year of high school, she had already started studying at college. Eventually, she earned an Associate’s degree in Nursing from Western New Mexico University and became a Registered Nurse (RN). Cassy then began her career as an RN at Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City, New Mexico, while simultaneously pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. At the time, she was residing in a rented home in Silver City. At 16, her personal life changed forever when she learned that she was pregnant with the child of her then-partner, Bradley “Brad” Scott Farrington.
Cassy Was Found Dead Inside the Bathtub of Her Rented Home
One month after giving birth to her first child, Cassy graduated from high school and tied the knot with Bradley. Within the next few years, they welcomed their second child into the world. While working as an RN, she also devoted time to caring for her children, Lila Zoey Marie and Tristan Scott. Unfortunately, cracks began appearing in her marriage, leading to her separation from Bradley in 2013. By the following year, Cassy had already embarked on a new chapter when she found love again in her boyfriend, David Berry. On March 24, 2014, she called her mother to say that after dropping her kids off at school, she planned to take a nap because she had worked the graveyard shift the previous night.
Things took a dark turn when Marc and Darlene learned that Cassy had not picked up her children from school. When her landlady went to check, she found the 23-year-old floating face down in an overflowing bathtub, prompting the former to call 911. When officials rushed to the scene, they declared Cassy dead and noted that she had multiple bruises on her body, particularly on her neck and face. They also found no signs of forced entry but observed a towel bar ripped from the wall in a guest bathroom, and that the house was flooded. Initially, the autopsy report classified her manner of death as homicide and listed her cause of death as homicide by unspecified means. Court records state another medical examiner later concluded it was a homicide by strangulation.
An Alleged History of Domestic Violence Led to the Arrest of the Killer
Initially, detectives at the scene questioned Cassy’s parents about whether she had ever considered dying by suicide, a possibility that her parents completely denied. According to court records, investigators didn’t collect any fingerprints or additional evidence from the crime scene. They followed several leads, but all individuals were ruled out as suspects, including the husband of Cassy’s landlady. A breakthrough arrived when her family informed the officials that she was allegedly abused by Bradley both physically and mentally during their marriage.
In their statements, Cassy’s family alleged that he had threatened the 23-year-old that his position as a police officer would save him if she ever reported him for domestic violence. Police records state that they also claimed that she had told them in different instances that Bradley was abusive towards Lila and Tristan. Furthermore, officials learned that at the time of her death, she was undergoing a contentious custody battle with him. Bradley was also reportedly aware that Cassy’s boyfriend, David, had formed an incredible bond with her kids.
That information led authorities to believe that Bradley might have committed the murder out of anger regarding the situation. Investigative records suggest that in one instance, after Tristan returned from a visit with Bradley, the child allegedly told Cassy that his father had told him about killing her and David. Based on circumstantial evidence, authorities issued an arrest warrant for him in October 2015. Since the state police weren’t aware of his whereabouts at the time, they sought assistance from other law enforcement agencies to track him down. Bradley was ultimately located in Tucson, Arizona, where he was arrested on October 23, 2015, and charged with an open count of murder.
Bradley Farrington is Incarcerated at a New Mexico Prison Today
After Bradley was taken into custody, he was held at the Pima County Jail in Tucson, Arizona, before he was extradited to New Mexico. Following that, he was held at the Grant County Detention Center, awaiting trial. His first jury trial began in February 2018, but it ended in a mistrial shortly after. His retrial commenced in August 2018, during which the prosecution presented witnesses, including Cassy’s coworkers, family members, and friends. They testified about the 23-year-old’s tumultuous relationship with Bradley and their contentious custody battle. The prosecution also claimed that the murder was the culmination of an abusive relationship.
The prosecution emphasized that the experts had deduced from the autopsy report that Cassy was likely killed by someone who was trained in defensive tactics, just like a former police officer. On the other hand, the defense contended that there was no forensic evidence or eyewitnesses connecting Bradley to the crime. Additionally, they questioned the handling of the evidence and the quality of the initial police investigation. On August 16, 2018, the defendant was found guilty of first-degree murder. Bradley was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years on September 7, 2018.
Bradley appealed his conviction and life sentence at the New Mexico Supreme Court, claiming the trial court improperly allowed Cassy’s loved ones and coworkers to testify regarding the alleged domestic abuse and threats. He further argued that there was insufficient evidence to establish that he was the killer. On October 19, 2020, the court unanimously upheld his conviction and sentencing. The court also denied his petition for a rehearing on November 18, 2020. As of writing, Bradley is serving his sentence at the Otero County Prison Facility in Chaparral, New Mexico.
