Affectionately known as Cati, Catherine Ann Blauvelt was a 22-year-old dutiful daughter and a beloved sister. In October 2016, she was living in Simpsonville, South Carolina, when she unexpectedly went missing. Two days later, her remains were discovered, leaving her mother, Patricia Barnett Piver, AKA Patti, and her sisters, including Jennifer Piver and Danielle Piver, completely devastated. In the episode titled ‘Cati Blauvelt: Death of a Soldier’s Wife’ of CBS’ ’48 Hours,’ the focus is on this heartbreaking case, revealing how Cati’s husband, John Blauvelt, and his girlfriend, Hannah Hampton, were responsible for Cati’s murder. Patricia Piver Moves Forward With Strength, Surrounded by Her Loved Ones
Patricia Barnett Piver, AKA Patti, is the mother of Catherine Ann Blauvelt, lovingly known as Cati. Patti still remembers October 26, 2016, when she found out that she had lost her beloved daughter, Cati, forever. While recalling her reaction, she stated, “I was totally empty inside. … She did not deserve to be murdered.” However, Patti didn’t let the grief stop her from bravely seeking justice for her daughter. While speaking about the day John was found guilty, she said, “As soon as the jurors got out, I just started crying.” During John’s sentencing, Patti bravely stepped forward to give a victim impact statement. After suffering the profound loss of her daughter, Patti now dedicates her time to speaking out on domestic violence and raising awareness on the matter.
Patti continues to reside in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and has been quite vocal about her political opinions. In her personal life, she finds unwavering support from her partner, Daniel Piver. The couple often spends time together at restaurants, goes on long drives, and watches sports at the stadium. In June 2025, they celebrated 20 years of their marriage. Aside from that, Patti finds happiness in the time she spends with her beloved daughters, Brandi, Taylor, Jennifer, Danielle, and Brittney, and her sons, John and Brandon. Throughout her life, she has been one of their biggest cheerleaders at every milestone. Her life was further lit up with joy when she welcomed her grandkids into her life. Patti often misses her father, which was highlighted by her birthday wish to him.
Patti wrote, “Happy Heavenly Birthday to the most wonderful Dad ever! Love and Miss you.” In her free time, she tries out different recipes in her kitchen, including peach cobbler. She also seeks solace while appreciating the beauty of nature. Although Patti has been working on healing, she still holds the memories of her dear daughter, Cati, close to her heart. On Cati’s 31st birthday, Patti poured her grief into words, in part, writing, “Happy 31st Heavenly Birthday. I miss you more today than yesterday, but not as much as I will tomorrow. Your eyes, your smile, your laugh, your everything. I just miss you so damn much.” Despite the pain, Patti continues to try to look toward brighter days ahead.
Jennifer Piver Thrives in a Career of Compassion While Honoring Cati’s Memory
To this day, Jennifer Piver tries to cope with the loss of her stepsister, Cati, when the latter was taken away from their family too soon. She often reminisces about the good times she spent with Cati and shares about her sister’s dreams, stating, “She wanted a family. She wanted to have kids.” As Jennifer spoke about the time Cati went missing, she expressed, “It’s terrifying. It’s the worst feeling. You feel helpless.” When she was asked what she would love to tell her sister, she answered, “That I’m sorry. … That I love her. And that I think she was brave.”
Jennifer’s love for Cati further came to the forefront when she didn’t back down from giving a victim impact statement before John’s sentencing, seeking the maximum penalty. Before the heartbreaking loss rocked her life, Jennifer was working towards creating an impressive career. After completing her education, she embarked on a professional trajectory as a mental health helpline operator at Mental Health America of Greenville County in August 1999, offering psychological support to others, and has now risen through the ranks to become Chief Executive Officer.
In December 2025, Jennifer reached another milestone when she was interviewed by Live 5 WCSC News, where she shared her journey from being a 988 caller to becoming the Chief Executive Officer. Beyond that, she raises awareness on domestic violence, as it was one of the reasons she lost Cati. In her personal life, Jennifer maintains a close bond with her nephews and nieces. Although several other little ones surround her, bringing joy to her life, the nature of her relationship with them remains unclear. Aside from everything, Jennifer still carries the grief of losing Cati within her to this day.

Brandi Blackwell Channels Her Grief Into Unwavering Love for Her Family
Brandi Blackwell, another of Cati’s sisters, also came forward during John’s sentencing hearing, taking the stand to deliver a victim impact statement. She revealed that the statement was originally written by her daughter, where the young girl wrote, “The twisted and evil actions of John Blauvelt took so much from many. He took the innocence and youth from so many naive, young adults, in whom he was meant to be a god. He took a daughter from her mother, a sister from living siblings, and an aunt from her young nieces.” Brandi also shared that for the 6 years John was on the run, her family was afraid for their safety.
During that statement, Brandi revealed that she and her husband started a family while simultaneously trying to “heal from the trauma and chaos John caused.” Brandi felt a sense of justice when John was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Beyond the grief, Brandi finds strength in the presence of her husband and their children, including her daughter, Alba Ann. Amid the turmoil of life, Brandi never forgets the support she always receives from her mother, Patti. Another big part of her heart belongs to her kittens, who are also her cuddle partners. To this day, Brandi cherishes all the memories she and Cati shared.
