In the episode titled ‘Heartless’ of A&E’s ‘The First 48,’ the primary focus is on the tragic killings of three members of the George family, including Christine, Trisa, and Leonard George, in their New Orleans home in September 2013. The entire community was left shell-shocked while the detectives worked to get to the bottom of the case. Witness statements and security footage led them to the perpetrator responsible for the triple homicide.
Christine, Trisa, and Leonard George Were Found Dead in Their Garage

On December 30, 1973, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Christine Marie George was welcomed into the world by Oliver George Sr. and Evelyn Gabriel Ellis. Growing up alongside her siblings, Patrick Preston, Dennis George, Alexander Preston III, Leonard Preston, Oliver George Jr., and Trisa Yvette George, Christine got into a relationship with Shelton Dennis, with whom she gave birth to Trisa Jonea George on August 11, 1993, in New Orleans itself. She was also a doting mother to three other kids, including Dewitt W. George, Jaron O. George, and Leonard S. George. On the professional front, Christine was employed at the New Orleans Police Department as a 911 operator and dispatcher.

Residing in the 4400 block of Jeanne Marie Place, she and her children led a fulfilling life in each other’s company. However, Christine’s hopes of witnessing them succeed in their lives were shattered on the fateful night of September 11, 2013. While returning home from her workplace that night, along with Trisa and Leonard, the 39-year-old mother of four was ambushed in her home’s garage. At the time, 20-year-old Trisa was in college studying to become a pharmacist, while 18-year-old Leonard, born on June 16, 1995, was a high school senior. When her other son, Jaron, heard loud noises, he went to the garage and made a gruesome discovery after 11 pm.

Jaron called 911 and reported a triple homicide. When the authorities arrived at the scene of the crime, they found Christine in the driver’s seat with three gunshot wounds on the face and one in the leg. Meanwhile, Leonard was in the passenger seat with two gunshot wounds. As for Trisa, she had sustained two gunshot wounds and was found outside the car. All three of them were pronounced dead on the scene, with the cause of death being multiple gunshot wounds. The detectives discovered five spent 9 mm bullets and six casings inside the car and the garage. Immediately, they launched a triple homicide investigation.
Christine, Trisa, and Leonard George’s Killer Maintained His Innocence
Since Jaron called 911, the authorities interviewed him to learn his version of the events that led to the deaths of his mother, Christine, and siblings, Trisa and Leonard. He claimed that around 10 pm, Trisa and Leonard went to the NOPD Dispatch Center to pick up Christine and bring her home. According to him, at about 11 pm, he heard gunshots from the garage, after which he learned about the murders. During the interview, he told the detectives that he believed Christine’s ex-boyfriend, Shawn Peterson, who had moved out of the house five days earlier, was responsible for the crime. They learned that Shawn was also the father of Leonard and had an unstable relationship with Christine.

Upon digging deeper into Shawn’s past, the investigators learned that he had served three prison terms, including a decade for attempted second-degree murder of a former girlfriend. He had also been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2008. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) named Shawn a person of interest, after which he came forward for an interview himself. He told the detectives that he had left Christine’s home of his own accord and had been in touch with her ever since then. When asked what he was up to on the night of the murders, he claimed to be with another woman at a local motel. He also alleged that Christine had called him that night around 10:45 pm.
As per his account, he learned about the tragedy through his mother, who called him and informed him that he was considered a person of interest. While maintaining his innocence, Shawn tried to blame it on Leonard, alleging that the murders could be the consequences of Leonard’s activities. When the detectives delved into his phone records, his story was deemed inconsistent as the call log didn’t show any calls from Christine around 11 pm. However, her cell phone showed that Shawn had called her quite a few times around 11 pm on the fateful night. After seven hours of questioning, he was allowed to go due to a lack of evidence.
The Killer Was Captured Near Christine George’s Home in Surveillance Footage
The investigators got a huge break in the case when they interviewed a friend of Shawn’s, with whom he claimed to be at a motel on the night of the murders. During the questioning, she claimed he had asked her to buy some 9mm bullets for him. She alleged that she drove him to his cousin’s house, which was six miles from the crime scene. She denied being at a hotel with him on September 11, 2013. In order to gather more evidence against Shawn, the detectives canvassed the area around the crime scene, hoping to find surveillance footage that captured him near Christine’s home.
Fortunately, they found a house with a camera one block away from the crime scene. The video showed a man resembling Shawn walking away from the George residence after the murders. Jaron was called to take a look at the footage and see if he could identify the man in it. He identified the man as Shawn from his gait and walk. Armed with an arrest warrant against Shawn, the detectives lured him into the police headquarters to help them recognize the killer from a picture. After he arrived, they arrested and charged him with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of Christine, Trisa, and Leonard George.
Shawn Peterson is Currently Incarcerated at a Louisiana Prison

More than two years later, on December 11, 2015, Shawn Peterson pleaded guilty to a manslaughter count. While the three murder counts were dropped, it was made clear that he admitted guilt to the killings of Christine, Leonard, and Trisa George. As part of the guilty plea, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison for his gruesome crimes. According to reports, the killer didn’t offer any sort of apology to the family members of the deceased in court. As of today, 54-year-old Shawn Peterson is serving his sentence at the Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
