Christopher Allgood: Where is the Killer Now?

In July 2009, authorities in San Antonio, Texas, responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex. Upon arrival, they discovered the bodies of Courtney Gass, her 2-year-old daughter, Anika Gass, and another victim, Kevin Bones. All three had been fatally shot, leaving investigators stunned at the brutality of the crime within a residential community. Not long after, the suspect was apprehended close to the scene. Investigation Discovery’s ‘Signs of a Psychopath: Guess I’m a Bad Dad’ explores the case and sheds light on the killer’s motives and mindset.

Courtney Gass, Anika Gass and Kevin Bones Were Shot in the Head in the Same House

Courtney Sherie Gass, the daughter of Judy Bradley and Dale Gass, was born on January 20, 1983, in Galveston County, Texas, before later settling in Texas City. She and her brother, Cody Gass, did not have much in their childhood, but they enjoyed the love of their parents and extended family. From an early age, she had a passion for music, which grew stronger during her teenage years as she developed a particular love for punk rock. She often attended concerts and embraced the rocker lifestyle, forming close friendships along the way. In 2005, she met Christopher “Chris” Allgood, a rap music producer, and their shared love of music quickly brought them together and they started a serious relationship.

On December 29, 2006, Courtney gave birth to her second daughter, Anika Adahlia Allgood. Her first daughter, Wendy Dreama-Sherie, did not live with her and she wanted to do things right this time. The little girl quickly became the center of her world. By late 2008, Courtney decided to move to San Antonio to live with Chris, and together they settled into an apartment on the city’s North Side. During the 4th of July celebrations, Courtney’s friend John Kevin “Bela Loco” Bones stopped by their place. He had recently gone to a concert with Courtney and wanted to return something she had left behind.

Born on April 2, 1974, in Houston, Texas, Kevin was visiting relatives in the area at the time. He worked as an insurance agent with Spurgeon Insurance Agency and was also a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Texas City. Outside of work, Kevin loved playing guitar and was known by the nickname “Bela Loco.” Friends remembered him for his easy camaraderie and his willingness to go out of his way to help others. In the early hours of July 5, 2009, Courtney’s neighbors heard a series of loud bangs coming from her apartment and quickly alerted the police. When officers arrived, they found that Courtney, her daughter Anika, and her friend Kevin had all been fatally shot in the head. What appeared to be a brutal attack left investigators urgently searching for answers.

Courtney Gass’ Killer Claimed that He Attacked Her in Self-Defense

The investigation quickly gained traction when police discovered Chris Allgood just outside the apartment, armed with an A-15 assault rifle. He was immediately taken into custody. During questioning, Chris initially denied any involvement in the killings, but as detectives pointed out inconsistencies in his story, he slowly began to talk. He alleged that Courtney had shot Kevin and Anika, and that he, in turn, shot Courtney in retaliation for killing their daughter and for self-defense. According to him, his then-girlfriend had displayed violent and aggressive behavior in the past, and he insisted he could no longer tolerate it. However, investigators soon uncovered a very different side to the story.

Since Courtney and Chris began their relationship, police had been called numerous times for domestic disturbances. According to reports, during the first year of Anika’s life, Texas City police responded to their homes on seven occasions for allegations of assault or conflict. In three of those incidents, Courtney was listed as the victim and Chris as the suspect, while in the other four, the roles were reversed. However, when investigators spoke with social workers and Courtney’s family, they firmly stated she would never harm her daughter. In fact, Courtney’s loved ones alleged that Chris killed her because she had finally decided to leave him and live independently. They further alleged he was responsible for Anika’s death. The police suspected that Kevin had been killed because he was in the house on that night.

Chris Allgood is Serving the Sentence For Courtney Gass’ Murder Today

Prosecutors charged Chris Allgood with one count of murder and one count of discharging a firearm in connection with Courtney Gass’s death. They chose not to pursue charges for the deaths of Anika Gass or Kevin Bones, citing insufficient evidence, though they intended to revisit the matter later. At his May 2011 trial, Allgood’s defense claimed he shot Courtney in self-defense after she allegedly killed the other two. However, his ex-wife, Deborah Hagebusch, and ex-girlfriend, Andrea Bremermann, both testified in court, alleging that he had a history of violent behavior.

Ultimately, Allgood was convicted of Courtney’s murder and sentenced to 75 years in prison, with eligibility for parole after 30 years, along with a $10,000 fine. He has not been convicted of Anika’s or Kevin’s deaths. Now 47, he is serving his sentence at the A. M. “Mac” Stringfellow Unit in Rosharon, Texas, with parole eligibility in 2039. He has an active profile on Penacon, a website that helps incarcerated individuals find companionship, and he has expressed a desire to find someone special again.
