In June 2024, Christopher Leshon Oatts Jr. visited New Orleans, Louisiana, to spend quality time with his siblings and cousins. The 39-year-old had never imagined that his life would come to a sudden end when he was walking the streets of the lively city. The heartbreaking homicide comes into focus on Netflix’s ‘Homicide Squad: New Orleans: Wrong Place Wrong Time.’ It provides firsthand accounts, investigative insights from the detectives who worked on the case, and the arrest of three suspects based on CCTV footage and other forms of evidence.
Christopher Oatts Jr. Was on a Sidewalk of Bourbon Street When He Was Shot
Born sometime around 1985, Christopher Leshon Oatts Jr. brought immense joy to the lives of Queen and Christopher Oatts Sr. As the only son and the eldest among his siblings, he took on the role of the protector of his beloved sisters, including Quintella Graham. He grew up alongside them in Deerfield Beach, Florida, surrounded by their parents’ love. From childhood, Christopher had always been a good athlete who loved playing football. He also loved exploring creative pursuits, which led him to sing in the church choir and play drums. After graduating from high school, Christopher eventually moved to Daytona Beach. There, he pursued higher education and earned a degree in Communications at Bethune-Cookman University.

Shortly after, Christopher relocated to Orlando, where he thought that he had met the love of his life. His relationship gradually blossomed, helping him embrace fatherhood with open arms when his son, Keiston, was born. Sadly, Christopher and Keiston’s mother eventually parted ways. He once again found another chance at love, which led him to welcome his second son, Khamir, into the world. No matter what the situation Christopher was in, he always made sure to make lifelong memories with his sons by taking them to theme parks from time to time. In his free time, Christopher enjoyed spending time with his grandfather by going golfing and on fishing trips. By 2024, the 39-year-old had been working as a Warehouse Manager at SeaWorld.
On June 21, 2024, Christopher visited New Orleans, Louisiana, and invited his sisters and cousins to meet them. Around 4 am on June 22, Christopher had come out of his hotel and was on the sidewalk in the 600 block of Bourbon Street when he was suddenly shot. Authorities present near the scene rushed him to the hospital, where he was later declared dead. Detectives soon recovered two shell casings at the scene and found no additional forensic evidence. The autopsy report revealed that Christopher suffered two gunshot wounds to his head, and those fatal wounds were determined to be the cause of his death. Considering the circumstances of his death, the case was ruled a homicide.
Footage From Multiple CCTV Cameras Helped Officials Identify the Suspects
Following the shooting, detectives reportedly learned from Christopher’s family that he had come there to meet his siblings and cousins. After bidding them goodbye on June 21, he returned to the hotel, but none of them could understand why he was out around 4 am the following day. According to reports, officials soon got CCTV footage from Bourbon Street, which captured a group of women and a man having a verbal altercation with another man. It showed someone from the group firing the gun at the man they were fighting with, but it hit Christopher, who was on the sidewalk. Reports state that soon after, two of the group members brought their car, picked up the other three people, and rode off. The discovery of additional footage revealed that the person who shot the gun from the group was actually a woman.

According to court records, the license plate readers soon identified the car when it entered Mississippi around 7:15 am on June 22. As the officials continued their search for the vehicle, they came across another surveillance footage, capturing the woman’s face while shooting. They reportedly noted in the video that after firing two shots, the magazine from the gun fell off, which led the suspect to stop firing. Additionally, another video caught one of the group members calling the shooter Mia. The suspects’ vehicle was finally spotted at an event in Columbia, Mississippi, where they discovered that Mia Lindsey, her brother, Cameron Lindsey, and their friend Mariah Campbell were three of the people from the group who were present at the scene during the time of the shooting.
Officials first questioned Mariah, who told them that their group had gotten into an argument on June 22 during one of their friend’s bachelor parties. In her statements, she denied recalling the shooting. According to court records, another of the women in the group emphasized that she didn’t see who the shooter was. However, she claimed that on that same morning, Mia had apologized to her, which she believed was for the shooting. When Mia was finally questioned, she reportedly claimed that she was directionally challenged and couldn’t remember June 22. Ultimately, Mia, Mariah, and Cameron were arrested on June 23, 2024. Mia was charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. While Cameron was charged with obstruction of justice, Mariah faced the charge of accessory after the fact to second-degree murder.
