‘Collision Course’ is a heist film in which the exploration of the interpersonal relationships between the characters takes center stage. The team targeting the multi-million-dollar haul from the bank is made up of four law enforcement officers. Carla is a detective who is sure to take the lead on the investigation into the bank robbery case. Her husband, Tomas, is a forensics analyst who can retroactively erase evidence from the crime scene. The couple is paired up with Raul, a cybersecurity worker who is also currently in the police academy, and his father, Pedro, who has retired from the force after a respectable career. However, unbeknownst to most, there is another strand of connection between this foursome. Carla is actually also seeing Raul behind her husband’s back. As the film goes down winding paths, presenting alternate timelines, it delves further into this dangerous romance and its potential endgame. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Carla and Tomas’ Marriage Has Been on the Rocks For a Long Time
‘Collision Course’ charts a unique path in which it follows the central robbers’ storyline in a linear path until the immediate aftermath of the robbery, before splitting up into different chapters. These chapters explore different timelines of what would happen if one of the four robbers were to die during the post-heist escape. Through these fragmented plotlines, the story offers bits and pieces of the characters’ past that allow the audience to gain a perspective on their personal motivations and relationships with each other. Carla and Tomas’ marriage seems to be on the rocks in every version of the story. The couple is under the pressure of debilitating financial debt, accrued by the husband’s gambling addiction.
It’s the primary reason why the duo is involved in the robbery at all. Another hardship that Carla and Tomas have faced in their past involves complications with their attempts to have a baby. The miscarriage had an impact on their marriage in a way that they have never quite managed to overcome. Although they have remained together through all of this, cracks have started to appear in their relationship. Thus, Raul’s arrival in their lives ended up changing everything. During the preparation for the heist, Carla ended up getting close to the academy student. An initial spark turned into something more, and soon enough, the two were falling for each other. Nonetheless, the heist and their joint partnership with Tomas made things all the more complicated.
Carla is Pregnant During the Heist
Carla’s pregnancy is one of the key details later revealed in the story. In the timeline in which she’s the one who loses her life in the car crash, Tomas learns about it, but only after it’s too late. His immediate suspicion falls on Raul, which leads to a direct confrontation wherein the latter reveals that the baby couldn’t have been his since he’s infertile. Whether or not he makes this claim only because he’s on the wrong end of Tomas’ gun remains unknown. Alternatively, in a different timeline, one with Tomas as the departed one, Carla reveals her pregnancy to Raul on her own. During this time, he makes no claims of infertility. Instead, he simply lets her know that he would embrace the child as his own regardless of who his real father is. This is the timeline where the couple actually stand a fighting chance together.
However, this timeline also ends with both Carla and Raul in handcuffs as they’re linked to the bank robbery two months after the crime had taken place. Ultimately, the film has an unexpected ending. It concludes its storyline at the time of the central car crash, only this time there are no fatalities. All four robbers survive and set out to carry out the rest of their plan, which involves laying low and tinkering with the police investigation until the case goes cold. As a result, Carla and Raul’s relationship has the potential to develop in many different ways. It’s possible that the detective’s pregnancy will push her to finally confront and end her unhappy marriage. Afterward, she can seek out a real romance with Raul. Conversely, there’s also a chance that she might stay with Tomas to give their relationship one last chance, this time with a baby in the mix. Thus, much like the fates of the characters themselves, the future of Carla and Raul’s relationship also remains inconclusive.
