Season 2 of Netflix’s ‘Community Squad’ (Originally titled ‘División Palermo’ in Spanish) deals with a hilarious group of misfits in Buenos Aires who are hired by the local police department in the neighborhood of Palermo to be members of the Urban Guard, a civilian unit meant to garner sympathy from the public and improve the reputation of the department. The comedy thriller series delves into themes of minority representation, tokenism, identity politics, inefficiency of public institutions, and love between completely different people.
The first season ended with Julio’s death at the hands of the Korean Mafia boss Chang Cho and Felipe being eyed for a position in the Intelligence Service. As season 2 nears its ending, Felipe finds himself trapped in a dangerous place with individuals motivated to cause him harm to achieve their objectives. Sofia makes the decision to save Felipe, while Miguel and the rest of the Urban Guard choose to rescue their colleagues from danger, risking their own lives. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Community Squad Season 2 Plot Summary
At a Korean Bar, Johanna approaches Chang Cho and Kim to reveal information about the Urban Guard. Meanwhile, Felipe is recovering from the bullet wound he took from Julio in the previous season. The Urban Guard gets bigger with other squads in different neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. Furthermore, Carolina Ponce runs for Mayor with a campaign centered around public safety. Felipe approaches Officer Arellano of the Buenos Aires Intelligence Service and gets hired as an intelligence officer. He takes the codename Florencio Ramos to operate discreetly and later reunites with Sofia, who returns from Rauch.
The Koreans confuse David, a new Urban Guard, for Felipe and shoot him to death. Arellano assigns Felipe a mission to observe the happenings at a café called Cuero Café, especially the actions of the owner named Martin Gauna (also known as Milton). Kim, Chang Cho’s right-hand man, approaches Felipe while he is on his mission in the café and attacks him; however, Milton takes action and shoots Kim and Chang Cho after Felipe cleverly slides him a gun. Milton thanks Felipe for saving both their lives and proceeds to show him a secret room beneath the café.
After the incident at the café, Arellano orders Felipe to infiltrate Milton’s gang by earning his trust. Due to his dangerous new mission, Felipe reluctantly breaks up with Sofia. Milton executes a bomb blast in an area called Dorrego and Cramer with Felipe’s inadvertent help, and later offers his posh apartment to Felipe. Meanwhile, Sofia starts to hook up with a new Urban Guard member called Nacho. Arellano successfully hacks Milton’s phone with Felipe’s help. Claudio Navarro emerges as the main opponent of Carolina Ponce for the Mayoral election, and in a gruesome scene, Milton orders Felipe to help him dispose of the body of Leo, a man whom he suspects has betrayed him.
To help her image, Carolina gives tasers to the Urban Guard, which inadvertently leads to a power outage in the city when one of the weapons misfires, causing a massive dent to Carolina’s campaign and image. Felipe discreetly takes care of Leo’s body with the help of Arellano and her right-hand man, Sosa. When Felipe returns to Cuero Café, he is led to a massive room beneath the establishment, which doubles as a sex dungeon of sorts, where friends of Milton engage in aggressive sexual acts. Due to Esteban reading out a goodbye letter from Felipe before he returned to the café, Sofia has a change of heart and attempts to rescue her former lover from Milton and his schemes.
Community Squad Season 2 Ending: Will Felipe and Sofia Get Married?
Felipe and Sofia are the emotional core of the story, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of a complex relationship. Due to his secretive mission with the intelligence service and to keep Sofia safe, Felipe reluctantly distances himself from his lover, causing her grief. To overcome her melancholy, she ends up sleeping with a fellow Urban Guard named Nacho, while Felipe explores the dark world of Milton, who seeks to dominate the city by helping Claudio Navarro win the Mayoral election. However, as the narrative heads towards a conclusion, Sofia finds herself drawn to Felipe once again, especially after she becomes aware of the letter he wrote before heading off to Cuero Café, where he claims he will always love her and is sacrificing himself for the greater good.
Sofia becomes emotional reading his heartfelt letter and decides to venture out with Esteban to save Felipe from the dangers posed by Milton in Cuero Café. After Felipe and Sofia survive the ordeal at the café, they grow closer to each other again, especially when Sofia finds out that Nacho was secretly working for Milton. At the very end of the season, the lovers shop for mattresses and are seen enjoying each other’s company. They lie down next to each other in the store, very much in love again. In a heartwarming twist, Felipe starts staring at a crib in the store, making his intentions clear that he wants to start a family with Sofia, despite all their complications.
They pick up a mattress and go to Sofia’s van. It is a strong possibility that the duo will get married, as they have overcome multiple hurdles to be in each other’s company again. As they kiss in the van, Felipe tells her that he loves her, before she passionately responds and starts driving. The van is driven off into the sunset, suggesting that the two will take their relationship to the next level and explore the possibility of a marriage.
Why Does Claudio Navarro Win the Election?
Claudio Navarro is the primary opponent of Carolina Ponce in the Mayoral election of Buenos Aires. He secretly colludes with Milton’s gang, who seek to establish his own influence in the city through his hold on Navarro. The politician runs a shady campaign centered around lies and deception. However, his plan with Milton is exposed when Felipe successfully manages to expose him by secretly recording his confession about his partnership with the crime boss, and his promise to help Milton secure certain public building projects in the park and the planetarium. Milton and Navarro both admit to their quid pro quo arrangement, unaware of the fact that Felipe is recording them using a secret wire.
However, Felipe’s wire is exposed, and this leads to a shootout between the Urban Guard and Pound’s men, including Navarro. The Urban Guard manages to expose Navarro’s involvement in the running of an illegal sex dungeon with Milton, as Mario records footage of Navarro wearing an obscene dress at the scene. Despite Mario and the others filming Navarro in his fetish clothes and uploading it on social media, his sexual fetish and involvement in shady activities actually work in his favor, and he wins the election by 70% of the votes. This is a commentary on the way the public sometimes chooses to vote for a criminal, despite being aware of the fact that he has been involved in something as heinous as an illegal sex ring meant to humiliate and dominate people.
Upon winning, Navarro announces a budget allocation thrice as big as earlier, according to what he terms the “real” police of the city. His election is seen as a victory for his business friends, such as Milton, who wish to expand their scope beyond their businesses. Navarro is able to garner enough sympathy from the public, who see him as an honest man who isn’t afraid to hide his true self from the public. This sentiment allows him to capture more than 70% of the votes and become the mayor.
Will the Urban Guard Continue to Function
The Urban Guard is the primary unit of the show, featuring a diverse list of members who try to make sense of their lives by serving the public. The group faces significant challenges throughout the storyline, having to face Milton and Navarro, and is secretly controlled by Pound. At the end of the season, Navarro’s electoral victory puts the Urban Guard at great risk of being shut down due to financial limitations imposed by the corrupt mayor. Navarro intends to shift the money to other departments, especially those that remain loyal to him. This leads to a new and challenging scenario for the Urban Guard, who finally met at the old Cuero Café, which was under renovation after the shootout incident.
Miguel, the main coordinator of the group, makes it clear that he wishes to see all of them work together. The group intends to use the space to start a new cafe called “Discafé,” highlighting the fact that most members have some sort of disability. Miguel also shows interest in using some of the space for his pursuit of drama and theatre. Though it is not clear whether the Urban Guard will start functioning again, it is definitely possible due to the fact that all the members are united and seem to share a passion for public outreach. Despite the issues related to the budget, Miguel will presumably be able to get some help from other places to facilitate the functioning of the group again in a discreet manner, away from the corruption of the police and the politicians, and only for the sake of public service.
Why Was Milton Killed?
Milton is a criminal who seeks to dominate the city through his shady dealings with Navarro and other corrupt officials. In a pivotal scene in the season, he ends up brutally shooting Chang Cho and Kim, the members of the Korean Mafia in Buenos Aires. Unbeknownst to him, Kim’s unnamed assistant happens to be in the shadows, looking at the violent act. Though Milton manages to eliminate the top-level members of the Korean Mafia, he is unable to see that there are those in the background vying for revenge.
Towards the end of the narrative, when it seems that Milton has achieved everything he possibly hoped for after the election victory of Navarro, he is seen atop a large building, which is revealed to be the new branch of Cuero Café, to be unveiled to the public soon. He is seen overlooking the empire that he has built, when he is shockingly faced by the Korean gang member, who shoots him without hesitation as revenge for his family.
