Countdown Episode 10 Recap: The Muzzle Pile

With episode 10, Prime Video’s ‘Countdown’ reaches a conclusion of sorts for its biggest and baddest threat. So far, the audience has been following our band of heroes as they come together in an interdepartmental investigation to put a stop to Belarusian terrorist Volchek and his menacing plans. However, even as this plot point nears its end, many other threads stay unresolved. With the job behind them, Oliveras has a better chance of convincing Meachum to give his treatment and recovery an actual shot. Meanwhile, a previous hitch in the case catches Bell’s attention, compelling him to unravel the identity of the traitor. Still, no one from the team is prepared when Ryan Fitzgerald, a Secret Service agent, uncovers a different plot that could lead to a national emergency. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Volchek Meets His Bitter End

Blythe and his task force’s dogged attempts ultimately bring them to a showdown against their nemesis at the Vine. As per his plan, Volchek has installed multiple trucks full of fissile bombs in the area to conduct a devastating attack on the United States of America. Fortunately, despite the mountain pressure of the situation, Shepherd is able to figure out a way to stop the explosions right before the terrorist can activate the detonation. As a result, in the aftermath, the latter has no choice but to bolt in hopes of escaping Meachum’s grasp. The LAPD cop and his DEA Agent partner stay close on their target’s tail. Nonetheless, an unexpected migraine, caused by Meachum’s brain tumor, causes him to fall short.

Consequently, once Volchek manages to make his way to a high-vantage point roof, he gains another chance at bringing his mission to fruition. He tries to shoot down the fissile trucks from his position to induce an explosion. Worse yet, Meachum, who is the closest agent available to take him down, can’t function properly in the midst of his medical emergency. Still, Bell rises to the occasion and puts his own FBI training to use, aiming his gun at the Belarusian from a distance. In the end, between the two agents, they’re able to land a shot on Volchek. Thus, the threat he poses finally comes to an end, successfully closing the chapter on this investigation.

Meachum Enters an Experimental Medical Treatment

Meachum’s most pressing complication over the course of the investigation has been his terminal cancer. Since his diagnosis, the LAPD detective seems to have accepted his fate, seeing no alternative end for himself. Thus, instead of focusing on treatments, he remains focused on living the rest of his life and going out in a blaze of glory. Nonetheless, while his presence certainly helps out in the task force, it also has its pitfalls. Oliveras, the only one privy to his diagnosis, is the only one who ever gets to see the vulnerable side of the agent. Yet, unlike him, she isn’t ready to blindly accept his diagnosis without even so much as a second opinion.

Luckily, Oliveras happens to be childhood friends with a neurosurgeon, Julio. Even better, the latter has recently begun dabbling in an experimental treatment that targets tumor regression. Once the DEA Agent convinces Meachum to hear Julio out, the duo discovers that he is apparently an optimum patient for the treatment. As such, thanks to Oliveras’ persistent attempts, the other agent gets a fighting chance against his disease. This also marks a crucial point in the progression of their interpersonal relationship. Oliveras and Meachum have had a will-they-won’t-they chemistry for some time now. Nonetheless, the latter’s previously terminal condition prevented anything serious from happening between them. Even now, before the treatment, the duo decides to put off any chances at romance until the LAPD cop’s medical condition becomes clearer. Yet, the fact that both are willing to give their relationship a serious try in the aftermath remains worth noting.

Agent Bell Puts Valwell Behind Bars

With Volchek dead, Blythe’s task force accomplishes its mission. As a result, in the aftermath, the agents disband, returning to their own departments. Shepherd gets a job in Washington, Luke becomes a Sergeant, and Meachum embarks on his treatment journey. However, before picking up his FBI career where he left off, Bell decides to tie up one last loose thread from the Volchek investigation. Previously, the task force led a raid on a security company connected to their enemies’ plans. However, a mole amongst their ranks tipped the terrorists about the mission, ultimately leading to its failure.

In the aftermath of Volchek’s death, Bell goes back to look through all the fine print of the paper trail available to him. As a result, the FBI Agent is able to establish a connection between the Belurisian and the District Attorney. Valwell has been preying on Blythe’s downfall from the very start. Initially, he had wanted to stay in the loop of the highly classified task force to help his own political career. Therefore, when Blythe continuously rejects his offer, the embittered DA stoops to illegal methods. Fortunately, thanks to Bell’s efforts, he’s able to collect enough evidence to arrest the man and seal his fate.

The Task Force Reassembles After Ryan Fitzgerald Uncovers Something Drastic

Ten months down the line, Blythe and his agents continue to work on their respective careers with no collective crossover. During this time, another agent enters the narrative. Ryan Fitzgerald is a Secret Service officer who deals with an incredibly unglamorous part of the job. He has to sift through numerous potential threat alerts to see if they contain any actual potential national threats. Although he usually deals with meaningless letters and emails, he happens upon something dangerously promising after receiving a voice message from a woman named Patricia Perez.

The voice message suggests the civilian has managed to stumble across the cabin of a potential presidential assassin in the woods, and the interaction hadn’t turned out well for her. Once Fitz ventures out to the location on a routine check, he confirms the same after finding Perez’s dead body. The clues on the scene suggest that whoever the killer is might have his sights on a Governor. Still, the possibility of him posing a threat to the President remains. Consequently, in the face of such a sizeable threat, Bylthe reasssembles his task force, this time with the addition of Agent Fitz. Notably, Oliveras remains absent this time around, allegedly due to a high-priority DEA case. Thus, it seems new mysteries have already arisen in the path of the agents.
