Things are starting to heat up in ‘Countdown,’ especially for the members of Nathn Blythe’s highly classified task force. Mark Meachum’s previous traverse into a risky undercover mission comes with a heavy price to pay. Nonetheless, even in the face of a tragic loss, the team continues to move forward in their investigation. Consequently, when Evan Shepard finds a lead on Mikhail Durko, a potential contact of their Belarusian terrorist, the Agents quickly move in on his location. Nonetheless, their target, a Borys Volchek who comes from intriguing origins, seems to perpetually remain one step ahead of our heroes. SPOILERS AHEAD!
The Task Force Sets up a Trap For Mikhail Durko
In the aftermath of Meachum’s mission at Timur’s uncle’s restaurant, the team suffers the tragic loss of one of their own: Agent Damon Drew. His death hits hard, especially for the LAPD cop, who can’t help but blame himself and his reckless tactics. Yet, he and the others have to find a way to move past the tragedy to continue working on their incredibly sensitive mission. Meachum’s venture into the restaurant’s basement, which housed a secret lair for Volcheck, gives way to some significant discoveries. Inside the dimly lit room, he was able to make out one seemingly notable name: Gallagher. Yet, while that lead may take some time to unravel, another pans out in promising ways.
Some research into the shootout’s location brings Evan to Mikhail Durko, the Belarusian owner of the restaurant, and Timur’s uncle. As such, it’s only a matter of time before Meachum and the others arrive at their target’s door. Nonetheless, all they find at his address is his abandoned wife. Although she attempts to play the oblivious victim card, Meachum and Oliveras manage to get some useful information from her regarding her husband’s plans to flee the country. Consequently, using the wife as bait, they manage to trick Durko into coming out of hiding. Still, once they take the restaurant owner into custody, it soon becomes obvious that he won’t be talking anytime soon.
Druko Helps the Task Force Set up a Meeting With Volcheck
Off-the-bat, Durko makes it clear that he has no interest in helping the law enforcement officers out in their quest to find their target. He equips plausible deniability to dodge all his suspicious activities and tries to exert his rights to get out of custody. Nonetheless, Meachum and the others never promised to play fair either. Therefore, once threats and the like against the man and his wife fail, they look for alternatives. That is when they stumble across Dmitri, one of Druko’s cousins, who seems to be in on all his plans. Consequently, one short trip later, they have information about Anya, a secret daughter who has been erased from the restaurant owner’s records.
Oliveras gains this information through dubious drug planting methods that raise questions about the heroin stash she pocketed from a previous bust. Yet, more important tasks lay ahead. Namely, an intense interrogation session with Durko, conducted by Evan, who, coincidentally, happens to look much like Anya. Therefore, after an emotionally tense interrogation in which the agent presses Durko about his daughter’s bleak future if he fails to comply with them, the latter agrees to extend his services to the squad. Thus, using the established communication system with Volcheck, he set up a meeting at the Van Nuys airport.
Volcheck Slips Through Their Fingers and Valwell Picks a Fight With Blythe
At first, the trap Blythe’s team sets up for Volcheck seems promising. Durko left a message on their designated spot, letting the other man know he had vital information to share with him. Therefore, as per protocol, a meeting at the airport is in order. Therefore, it comes as a massive surprise when the man who approaches Durko at the location turns out to be a regular pilot rather than his Belarusian contact. Although the team doesn’t know it yet, Volcheck had spied out his colleague’s compromised state when he left a message for him in the public area. For the same reason, he intentionally avoids the meeting, ensuring he remains out of the task force’s reach.
Meanwhile, another threat looms on the horizon for Blythe and his gang of misfits. Earlier, Valwell, the local District Attorney, had expressed an interest in learning more about the investigation and providing support to the Agents. Nonetheless, Blythe had decided to keep his task force under wraps to protect its confidentiality. As a result, Valwell makes his move against the special agent. He uses his influence to compel the LAPD to reach out for Luke and Meachum’s transfer to in-office assignments. Thus, it seems if the DA can’t have his foot in the right doors, he’s prepared to blow the whole place open, if necessary. FBI Agent Keyonte Bell seems to have only nice things to say about the man, who once helped out his father in a case, even at the risk of ruining his entire career. Consequently, despite his currently agonizing presence in Blythe’s mission, his true character and intentions remain ambiguous for now.
