Courtney Coco’s Family Sought the Help of a Podcaster for Her Case
On October 4, 2004, Stephanie Belgard received a call from the police asking her to come and identify the remains found in Winnie, Texas. The authorities suspected it was her youngest daughter, Courtney Coco, but Stephanie found it difficult to accept. Although she hadn’t heard from the 19-year-old in two days, she was convinced nothing terrible could have happened. However, upon arriving at the police station, her worst fears were confirmed. While investigators pursued leads, including the recovery of Courtney’s phone and car, none yielded substantial progress. In the midst of heartbreak, Stephanie, alongside her daughters Lace and Heather Evans, began making arrangements for the funeral.
David Anthony Burns, who had been Lace’s fiancé for six years, supported the family through their grief and even served as a pallbearer at the funeral. Frustrated with the slow progress of the police investigation, the family frequently called in with their own insights and theories. By 2019, Stephanie felt the need to take further action and reached out to Woody Overton, a former law enforcement officer and host of the popular podcast ‘Real Life Real Crime.’ Believing his expertise could provide fresh perspectives, she was hopeful for a breakthrough. When his investigative series ‘Who Killed Courtney Coco’ gained attention, it indeed brought in new leads.
In April 2021, when the police informed the family that Burns had been arrested on charges of second-degree murder, they were in disbelief. Lace was questioned again, and she revealed that she had once suspected him of having an affair with Courtney. However, she said that both Burns and Courtney had denied it at the time. During his trial in October 2021, Lace testified about the promise ring her ex-fiance had given Courtney, which confirmed her suspicions. She also mentioned a missing comforter from Courtney’s room, which she believed was with Burns’ mother. Additionally, she recounted how he had left after their argument on the weekend of Courtney’s death and only returned after her remains were found. Her testimony played a huge role in his conviction.
Lace Evans and Heather Riggs Are Settled and Comfortable in Their Lives
Both Lace Evans and Heather Evans Riggs live in Alexandria, Louisiana, and they like the fact that they are close to their mother and grandmother. Lace previously worked at Dr. Moreau Family Dentistry, the same place where Courtney worked before her passing. While she hasn’t shared much about her current job, it’s evident that she deeply values her family. In September 2024, she visited a museum with her mother and created some fun memories. She takes time out from her schedule to enjoy these precious moments together. A devoted woman of faith, Lace has a beloved dog, Sandy, who is her constant companion and best friend. The LSU Alexandria graduate continues to hold Courtney’s memory close to her heart.
Heather, on the other hand, is more private, focusing much of her attention on her three children — Cameron, Cody, and Brice. She takes immense pride in their accomplishments and has dedicated herself to providing them with the best life possible. She is currently working at Extreme Organizers Housekeeping and is an independent woman who has always provided for her family. The 45-year-old has likely told her children about their late aunt and supports her mother’s efforts to honor Courtney’s legacy.
Stephanie Belgard Continues to Commemorate and Celebrate Her Daughter’s Life
After David Burns’ conviction for Courtney’s murder, Stephanie Belgard spoke emotionally about how she would never forgive him for taking away such a precious part of her life. She continues to honor her daughter’s memory and legacy by organizing various events in Courtney’s name. In fact, she is planning a Victims’ Rights Walk for Courtney in April 2025 and has even created merchandise to support the cause. Stephanie, who previously worked at the front desk of Best Western Hotels & Resorts, now seems to be retired and enjoying a fun-filled life in Alexandria, Louisiana. She remains a compassionate and dedicated advocate for those in need, attending concerts and helping stray animals in her community.
For Stephanie, her family is incredibly important, and she shares a close bond with both her daughters. As a grandmother to three, she takes great joy in celebrating their achievements and supporting them at every opportunity. When her middle grandson graduated from LSU in January 2025, she seized the moment to remind him how loved and special he was. Her unwavering support extends to her daughters, whom she proudly cheers on in all their endeavors. In October 2024, Stephanie underwent hand surgery, but thanks to her strong and supportive circle of friends, she navigated the challenging days with resilience. The love she receives from those around her is a testament to the kindness and generosity she continuously shows to others. Stephanie finds fulfillment in her life with her husband, Bobby, and expresses gratitude for the peace they’ve found.
Nelson LaBorde Passed Away in 2016, While Ina LaBorde Likes to Keep Herself Busy
Courtney Coco’s grandfather, Nelson LaBorde, played a significant role in the investigation when he anonymously called the police, advising them to “follow where the money is.” While this clue didn’t make immediate sense, it became clear after David Burns’ arrest and the conclusion that Courtney was killed during an attempted robbery. Unfortunately, Nelson passed away on January 7, 2016, without witnessing the justice he longed for. He had a successful career as a banker for over 42 years and was actively involved in his church.
Nelson’s wife, Ina LaBorde, did live to see Burns brought to justice for his crimes. She now resides in Pineville, Louisiana, and frequently spends time with her daughter and grandchildren. She remains active and is employed at AFSCME Louisiana Council 17, a union representing public service employees. There, Ina advocates for better working conditions, fair wages, and benefits for its members. She has remained a steadfast advocate for Courtney, standing as one of the strongest voices in the long fight for justice.
