At the end of ‘Criminal Code‘ season 2, Benicio and Suellen’s cat-and-mouse game with Isaac and the Ghost Gang leads to more open-ended questions than answers for the Federal Police team moving forward. Despite going on a journey that redefines their primary objective because of the hurdles conjured up by Isaac, the duo persistently continues their fight for justice, often turning it into a personal quest for redemption. As such, we see them grow and change as individuals throughout the season, pushing their characters and the overall narrative into entirely new territory. However, with challenges mounting every step of the way, our central duo is left with much to do by the look of things by the second season’s conclusion, increasing the likelihood of a season 3, which might hit the streaming shelves sometime around late 2026 or early 2027. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Criminal Code Season 3 Could Center On Capturing Isaac and Cabeca
Despite largely focusing on the battle between the Federal Police and the Ghost Gang, the second season of ‘Criminal Code’ does not provide an adequate resolution to the conflict raging between the two sides. By the end of the story, Isaac manages to escape from the clutches of Suellen and Benicio, finding secret lodging with a new wealthy partner named Italo. Meanwhile, a new player also takes charge of the underworld in the shape of Cabeca, a prison inmate who mounts an escape with help from Soulless. In season 2, Cabeca becomes the unofficial leader of the crime faction previously operated by the Ambassador. To that end, his rise introduces another formidable threat into the equation, one both Suellen and Benicio have to deal with.
It is possible that Isaac’s journey in a potential third season will take him ever closer to crossing paths with Suellen in particular, especially because she is responsible for killing his brother, Gabriel, and his close associate, Lobo. With two significant losses inflicted by the woman, Isaac might be on a revenge mission as much as a quest to reclaim his position as the most notorious thief in the South American continent. To that end, we might see him also team up with Cabeca on a few occasions, mainly because the latter now has access to immense wealth, power, and influence, which could make him a great contact to have. Furthermore, we have yet to see how Italo factors into the whole mix, as we see him take a sponsorship role behind Isaac. It could be a vital game-changer, but to what end, no one knows.
Criminal Code Season 3 Might Explore the New Rift Between Benicio and Suellen
While narratively, a third season could center on the return of Isaac and Cabeca as primary adversaries, the personal storyline that might be of equal importance moving forward is the newfound distrust between Benicio and Suellen. At the end of season 2, we see Benicio abandon Suellen during the showdown at the Sao Paolo port, mainly because he is obsessed with putting Soulless behind bars. This comes as no surprise as we have seen Benicio lose all sense of rationality and logic whenever the topic of Soulless is raised in his vicinity. Ever since losing his partner, Santos, to the hands of Soulless, Benicio treats the latter as his mortal adversary and someone he is deeply invested in making pay for his crimes. We see this in full effect in the second season finale.
One of the major consequences of Benicio’s decision to pursue Soulless is that it leaves Suellen entirely alone and at a disadvantage against Isaac and Lobo. She has to fend for herself while Benicio has a physical altercation with Soulless elsewhere. As such, she feels betrayed by her partner, who is more fixated on revenge and comeuppance rather than her safety. It leads to a sense of awkward silence between them as they realize the fundamental issues in their professional relationship moving forward. Therefore, season 3 could exclusively delve into the fallout of Benicio’s decision and how it affects Suellen’s feelings towards him. The door is even open for a reshuffling of partnerships, as Suellen might ask for a different partner after her loss of trust in Benicio. We will have to wait and see how it plays out in the future.
Criminal Code Season 3 Will Likely Bring Back the Main Cast
As ‘Criminal Code’ has been staunchly led by the presence of our two main characters, Benicio and Suellen, it is hard to imagine the show coming back for a third season without Rômulo Braga and Maeve Jinkings returning as the central duo. They will likely be supported in their journey by Deputy Sheriff Rossi, brought to life by Pedro Caetano, and Letícia Tomazella’s Inspector Delegada Vendramin. Additionally, with Isaac still on the loose and a wanted personality on both sides of the border, we can also expect Alex Nader to reprise his role as the formidable antagonist. Other notable additions could include Miguel Nader as the Federal Police Officer Gomes and Milton Lacerda’s Saldanha, who has a small battle with Suellen due to a tragedy in season 2’s opening.
Although the bulk of the cast is possibly going to remain the same, some big players will undoubtedly be omitted from season 3 because of the second season’s storyline. For instance, it is unlikely that Thomás Aquino’s Soulless will make a return, especially after his death at the hands of Benicio. His family could be a different matter altogether as Soulless’ wife, Monica, and their son could play a pivotal emotional role in the series. Considering Soulless’ final request before dying, it is highly plausible that Benicio will circle back into his rival’s orbit in one way or another, adding more tension and drama into the mix. Another significant character that will likely no longer feature is Nico García Hume’s Ambassador, who meets a grisly death in season 2.
