TLC’s ‘Dangerously Obese’ highlights the conviction of individuals willing to make dramatic shifts in their health and lives by committing to major weight-loss journeys. In the show’s second season, Crystal Johnson appeared with that same determination. Her time on the series not only focused on her efforts to lose weight but also allowed her to open up about deeper personal struggles. Through the process, she confronted the underlying issues that had shaped her life and expressed her desire to rebuild and move forward with intention.
Crystal Johnson Surprised Herself With Her Weight-Loss Success
Crystal Johnson shared that she had been heavy since kindergarten. She explained that in her family, affection was often expressed through food, something she didn’t fully understand as a child. As she grew older, using food for comfort became a lasting habit, and with every stress or setback, her portion size increased. Eventually, she found herself struggling to move freely and feared that if she continued down that path, her life could be at risk. Crystal also opened up about her sexuality and shared that she is gay and had concealed this from her conventional family for years. She even entered a marriage, but it ended shortly afterward because she could no longer maintain the façade.

When she met Dr. Charles Procter, he asked her to step on a scale for the first time in years, and she was stunned to learn she weighed over 500 pounds. He instructed her to lose 30 pounds, but Crystal understood that it would require a bigger personal change. She began confiding in friends about her sexuality, joined an aerial fitness class, and signed up for a dating site, where she met Nicole, whom she began dating. Despite moments of struggle with her diet and routine, Crystal pushed forward. At her next appointment, she feared she had gained weight, but stepping onto the scale revealed she had actually lost 60 pounds and qualified for surgery. A year later, during her big reveal to her family, Crystal proudly shared that she had now lost nearly 300 pounds, weighing 263 pounds, and was determined to continue her progress.
Crystal Johnson is a Reliable Presence For Her Family Today
Crystal Johnson’s life today is grounded in the love and support of her family in Leesville, Louisiana. Her siblings, Christina, Sara, Shanan, and Rolind, have been her biggest cheerleaders, consistently standing by her through every challenge. She shares an especially close bond with her mother, Mary Ann Johnson, and has been deeply involved in her health needs. In June 2024, Crystal even reached out to friends for help in finding a good doctor for her mother. She was also a steadfast source of strength for her brother Shanan during his cancer diagnosis, and helped him sell raffle tickets and raise funds during this tough time.
Crystal’s nieces and nephews continue to celebrate her achievements, and she has taken on the role of the fun, supportive aunt. She also appears to be an animal lover, something shared by many in her family. In their small town, this close-knit lifestyle significantly shapes their everyday world. Crystal hasn’t publicly clarified whether she is still in a relationship with Nicole, but she appears content with where she is in life. For her, that sense of peace and stability is what matters most.
