Cutesie is a dog that plays a pivotal role in the emotional complexities of the relationship between the two. She provides emotional support to Jessica during her time in New York, and the protagonist’s experiences with her four-legged friend lead her to make certain important decisions in her life that have a greater impact on the storyline. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Cutesie Plays a Significant Role in Jessica and Zev’s Relationship

When things are still going well for Jessica and Zev, they visit a park where Jessica spots a pet adoption place. She is immediately drawn to it and drags her boyfriend to take a look at the four-legged beings. Zev hesitates to let her get a pet as he is uncomfortable about the idea. However, Jessica has her heart set on Cutesie and takes her home. She shows commitment towards her new friend, even reading books on how to take care of dogs. In a rather shocking scene, a rude woman at the park accuses Cutesie of harming her dog, despite the fact that it was just a friendly greeting between the two animals. This leads to an argument between Jessica and the strange woman, who uses expletives against the protagonist and calls her pet a violent dog.

Following the verbal conflict, Jessica reassures Zev that she will get trainers to learn how to care for her dog better. The argument makes him very anxious, and he rudely tells Jessica that if she can’t handle a dog, how will she handle a baby if they ever decide to become parents. This remark shakes up Jessica and serves as a starting point for the crumbling of their relationship. Zev starts emotionally distancing himself from her due to his own insecurities. Due to his intolerable insults and psychological bullying, Jessica is forced to give up her friend. The protagonist sacrifices her bond with her four-legged friend just to ensure that her relationship with her boyfriend stays intact.

Because of her insecurities that keep building due to her giving up the dog, Jessica also decides to have an abortion later in a heartbreaking scene. Cutesie provided her a sense of belonging and loyalty, but her absence makes Jessica feel lost and realize how her boyfriend bullied her into emotional isolation. Unfortunately, the dog and Jessica don’t get to form a deeper bond due to the insecurities of a flawed man. It can be assumed that Cutesie probably finds a new home, that’s not toxic, and has a better life compared to what she would’ve experienced if Jessica opted to keep her. The protagonist cared for the dog too much to abandon her randomly, and would have definitely ensured that her new owners or caregivers are decent and caring people.
