The filming of DailyWire+’s upcoming series ‘The Pendragon Cycle’ has wrapped in Hungary and Italy. The fantasy series is a re-imagination of the legend of King Arthur, set in Roman-occupied Britain where savage invaders pose a threat to lay claim to the island. “Merlin, the son of an Atlantean princess and the bard, Taliesen, pursues his father’s vision of a Kingdom of Summer — a British nation unified in peace. But to achieve this dream, Merlin has to overcome ancient evils and navigate both the fall of the Roman occupation and the rise of Christianity in search of a king who can unite the Island of the Mighty,” reads the official logline.
The show is based on Stephen R. Lawhead’s six-part book series of the same name. The first season is an adaptation of the first two books: ‘Taliesin’ and ‘Merlin.’ The seven-episode series is directed by Jeremy Boreing (‘The Arroyo‘) and Ryan Whitaker (‘After’). Notably, Boreing is the co-CEO of The Daily Wire, who is temporarily stepping down from his duties to focus on helming the show.
“I have dreamt of bringing Stephen R. Lawhead’s books to the screen for twenty-five years. Based on perhaps the most impactful myth in Western tradition, the Legend of King Arthur, this series helped shape my worldview since reading it as a teenager. Yet it is bittersweet, as to bring this project to screen means to leave the country and temporarily step down from my role as co-CEO of The Daily Wire,” Boreing said in a statement.
‘The Pendragon Cycle’ stars Tom Sharp in the lead as Merlin. The actor previously worked in several short films and appears in a small role in the 2017 comedy ‘Nobody’s Perfect!’ Speaking about Sharp’s association with the project, director Boreing stated, “Pendragon is the most ambitious project we’ve ever taken on, and we are thrilled to have a true talent in Tom Sharp as our lead. His depth as an actor makes him the perfect choice to bring the legendary hero to life. Merlin is one of the most iconic characters of all time, and I have no doubt this will prove to be a breakout role for Tom.”
The show also stars YouTuber Brett Cooper as Ganieda, James Arden as Taliesin, and Rose Reid, who also serves as a writer of the series, as Charis, the female lead character. The rest of the cast includes Myles Clohessy, Finnian Cassidy, Alex Laurence Phillips, Flo Thompstone, and Emree Franklin. The ensemble is rounded up by Duran Fulton Brown, Daniel Considine, Bertie Newman, George Prentice, and Alex Arco.
The series is produced by Travis Mills, Ari Novak, Amanda Presmyk, Jonathan Halperyn, Augusto Pellicca, and Jules Nasso. The executive producers include Boreing, Whitaker, Caleb Robinson, Ben Shapiro, Dallas Sonnier, Danielle Cox, and Daniel Kresmery. The show is scheduled to premiere on DailyWire+ in 2024. However, the exact release date is yet to be announced.
Hungary, known for its diverse and picturesque landscapes, has also served as a filming location for several other shows and films, including ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick,’ ‘Homeland,’ ‘Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,’ ‘A Good Day to Die Hard,’ ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ and ‘Black Widow.’ Italy, on the other hand, is renowned for its historical sites and architectural beauty and has previously hosted the production of ‘The Little Mermaid,’ ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ and ‘Murder on the Orient Express.’
