Dan Da Dan is a tale of aliens, monsters, the occult, the supernatural, and friendship. Following the journey of Momo and Okarun, it deals with their trials and tribulations as they explore the mysteries of the world, while also navigating their feelings for each other. The previous episode ended with Momo finding out that there is an entity called the “apartment complex ghost,” and deducing that it could probably be Okarun’s lost “Kintama.” As Evil Eye struggles to adjust to his new reality, Momo starts to think that Okarun could regain what he lost. These events set things up perfectly for “The Secret Art of Being Attractive,” the tenth episode of the second season. SPOILERS AHEAD.
A Stranger Talks to Okarun
The episode starts with a strange boy following his morning routine and getting ready for school. He sings on the way to school and even keeps hair combs ready to adjust his style on the go. Okarun spots Momo waiting for him by the school’s entrance, and hesitates to speak to her, while the strange boy observes them. In the classroom, the new boy keeps staring at Okarun, while pretending to read. During the lunch break, Okarun and Momo try to find each other, but somehow end up going in the opposite direction. The stranger stalks the two of them in a rather dangerous manner, while the protagonists start to wonder if they are avoiding each other.
In a pivotal moment, the main characters bump into each other while thinking about themselves, leading to an accidental kiss between them. This takes the people around by surprise, especially the unknown boy. Back in the classroom, the new boy begins to act weirdly to get Okarun’s attention, but finally starts talking when he realizes that Okarun is lost in his studies. The stranger asks the protagonist about the secret behind his closeness with Momo and his popularity with other girls in the school, while referring to him as his “enemy.” He wonders how an ordinary-looking boy could be so close to someone as attractive as Momo.
The Kintama Makes an Appearance
As the stranger continues to question Ken Takakura, he is interrupted by Momo, who starts asking the protagonist about his lost testicle (Kintama). This causes the stranger to hyperventilate and chaotically walk around the class, as he mistakes Momo’s words for seductive talk. When he looks at Okarun being courted by another girl in the classroom, it irks him further, but he fails to get anyone’s attention. Momo and Okarun walk towards an apartment complex and talk about Ken’s newfound popularity. Okarun is shocked to hear Momo calling him “cool.” They talk about the possibilities surrounding the Kintama, while the unnamed boy discreetly stalks them.
The stranger intends to learn the art of “spicy talk” and desperately hopes to kiss Momo. However, he accidentally trips over a bucket, which compromises his secrecy. He appears to float in the air as he reaches for Momo’s lips, but is stopped by Okarun, who transforms into the Turbo Granny form. Suddenly, they spot the Kintama, which seems impossible to get hold of, as it appears to be controlled by an invisible entity or person. The Kintama runs away from them, and they start following it. As the protagonists make their way upstairs, the golden ball strikes Momo, causing her to fall.
The Threat of a Kaiju
The main characters test the limits of their powers to get hold of the golden ball, but find it impossible to do so. Moments later, they hear the voice of the strange boy, screaming. Momo uses her powers to save the “perv” from crashing to the ground, following which the Kintama appears again. Momo and Okarun start to chase it again, while the stranger also tries to help. In a fortuitous moment, Miss Ayase spots a strange entity controlling the Kintama and grabs it using her powers. Okarun goes “all out” as Turbo Granny again and hurls the entity towards the ground.
The unknown boy reveals a science fiction concept and says that the so-called invisible entity became visible due to a phenomenon called “electro-luminescence.” As the protagonists look below, they see that a monster called “Kaiju” is in control of the golden ball, which shocks Okarun. Suddenly, the Kintama becomes invisible, and the Kaiju transforms into a building-sized beast, almost as big as Godzilla, and stares at the three characters. It then starts to move and looks at the city down below, with a possible intention of destroying it. The fates of the protagonists and the others in the city lie in the balance as the Kaiju stands tall.
