In August 2018, officials received a 911 call reporting an odor from a storage unit behind a trailer in Clinton Township, Michigan. It led to the discovery of the remains of 18-year-old Danielle Marzejka and 19-year-old Seren Abner Bryan. The case soon drew widespread attention to the investigation, which prompted a manhunt outside the state. The episode titled ‘The Back of the Shed’ on Investigation Discovery’s ‘The Murder Tapes’ reconstructs the investigation through in-depth interviews with Danielle and Seren’s loved ones and real-time footage. Furthermore, the episode features interviews with the officials who worked diligently to catch the killer.
Danielle Marzejka and Seren Bryan Were Building Their Careers When Tragedy Struck
Robert Marzejka Sr. and his wife were overjoyed when they welcomed their daughter, Danielle Marzejka, into the world sometime around 2000. She grew up alongside her brothers, Kevin and Robert Leo Marzejka Jr. According to reports, the family frequently moved from place to place due to financial hardships. In 2011, they faced a massive heartbreak when Danielle’s mother suddenly passed away. By August 2018, Danielle and her family had settled in a rented mobile home in Clinton Township, Michigan. Her loved ones often described her as someone who always remained optimistic. Kevin stated that Danielle was quite creative and had an interest in bees and spiders. During a bonfire, she crossed paths with the love of her life, Seren Abner Bryan.

Seren and Danielle’s conversations eventually gave way to a deeper connection, and he began staying with her in her family’s trailer. Seren arrived in the world as a bundle of joy on November 15, 1998. From a young age, his mother, Diane Bryan, and his father taught him to be considerate of others’ feelings. The 19-year-old loved to draw as his form of self-expression and maintained a sketch journal. After completing their initial education, Danielle and Seren began their professional trajectory by joining an outlet of the National Coney Island, where they worked on the night shift that began at 9 pm. On August 23, 2018, their work friend, Khriscinda Whaley, dropped the couple off at Danielle’s home around 8 am after finishing their shift since the pair didn’t own a vehicle.
Danielle and Seren’s Remains Were Concealed Inside the Former’s Shed
Following that, Khriscinda made multiple attempts to contact Danielle and Seren, but received no response. When they weren’t found in their home, Khriscinda took Robert Sr. to the police station, where the latter reported his daughter missing on August 25. Things took a turn on August 26, when Kevin and Robert Sr. noticed a foul odor and flies around their back shed. With Khriscinda present, the father and son opened it to find several garbage bags, and upon tearing one of them, they discovered human remains. They promptly called 911 to report the findings. When authorities arrived, they discovered that the two large bags contained the remains of a woman and a man. Reports state that both of their hands and feet were bound, and their mouths were covered with duct tape.

Investigators reportedly identified the remains as Danielle’s and Seren’s. According to records, officials found their laptop, mobile charger, purse, and duffel bag, among other items, in their bedroom. Forensic experts noted that the remains had been covered with multiple plastic bags, and they had begun decomposing. In other garbage bags, they found bloody items like bedsheets, pillows, and duct tape. They reportedly recovered a bloody mallet, which they considered to have been used in the double homicide. The autopsy revealed that both of them suffered fractures to their skulls. According to court records, their cause of death was determined to be a combination of asphyxiation and blunt force trauma.
The Killer Was Apprehended in Ohio Within a Week of the Double Homicide
Initially, officials learned that Khriscinda had helped Robert Sr. search for Danielle and Seren. According to reports, she told detectives that when Kevin and his father went to check the shed, Robert Sr. was unable to find his key on the shelf. It reportedly led Kevin to open the shed with his spare key. When they questioned Danielle’s father, he initially claimed that he opened it with his own keys, as per reports. Police records suggest that when Kevin was interrogated, he revealed that his brother, Robert, was unreachable since the finding and hadn’t been active online. Records mention that during a subsequent interview with the authorities, Robert Sr. clarified to using Kevin’s key to open the shed. Robert Sr. declared that on August 23, 2018, he bid goodbye to Danielle and Seren around 8:15 am to go for a painting job.

According to reports, Robert Sr. claimed that Robert picked him up in their white van and they went together for the painting work. Court records suggest that when forensic experts used Bluestar to find blood traces in Danielle’s room, they detected evidence of a large amount of blood on the walls and floor, which had likely been wiped clean. Inside the closet in Robert’s room, they uncovered bloodstained items like bedsheets, duct tape, towels, and other things that appeared to have been used to clean a crime scene. As the search for him began, investigators discovered that a cab had dropped him off at a nearby Wendy’s on the afternoon of August 23, according to records. Official reports indicate that the CCTV captured Robert riding a bus to the end of the route, which differed from what his father had initially understood.
On August 29, authorities from Toledo, Ohio, discovered Robert’s abandoned van in the parking lot of a local grocery store. Police records indicate that surveillance footage from a nearby store captured him wearing sunglasses and a blonde wig as a disguise and buying a cell phone. He then reportedly returned the phone for a refund. According to reports, as detectives tracked his movements, they discovered he bought a bus ticket to Cincinnati and arrived there around 3:45 am on August 29. As per investigative records, a bus stop worker informed officials that Robert had asked her about the library. Ultimately, undercover officials arrested him at the Cincinnati Public Library on August 29 and extradited him to Michigan. Robert was formally charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder.
Robert Marzejka is Incarcerated at a Michigan Correctional Facility Today
In December 2018, Robert Marzejka was deemed competent to stand trial. His jury trial commenced in November 2019, during which the prosecution presented several pieces of evidence. They believed the defendant struck Danielle and Seren on the head with the hammer before binding and putting them inside the garbage bags, where they died from suffocation. The prosecution also pointed out that his role in the concealment of the remains and fleeing from the state indicated premeditation. On the other hand, the defense didn’t dispute that Robert killed Danielle and Seren. They reportedly contended that the defendant suffered from mental illness.

The defense pointed out that Robert had experienced mental problems following his mother’s death. On November 23, 2019, the jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree premeditated murder. He was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on January 14, 2020. Robert later appealed his convictions on the grounds that his trial counsel was ineffective and that the evidence wasn’t sufficient for the jury to find the crime premeditated. However, on September 16, 2021, the court upheld his judgment. As of writing, Robert is serving his sentence at the Chippewa Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, Michigan.
