David Hoshaw: Where is Vonda and Angel Goyena’s Killer Now?

In ABC’s ’20/20: House of Cards’ and the special edition of ’20/20′ titled ‘Bad Romance: Betrayed,’ the focus is on the 2007 double homicide of an excited future bride named Angelique Goyena and her mother, Vonda Goyena, in Norfolk, Virginia. While the tragedy shook the entire community to its core, grief took over the loved ones of the deceased, except for Angelique’s fiancé, David Hoshaw. Harboring an extramarital affair and a violent side, he managed to escape justice for a few years, until he was finally apprehended and brought to justice. Through interviews with the people connected to the case, the documentary provides an insightful account of the murders and the investigation that ensued.

David Hoshaw Had a History of Violence Against His Partners Before Meeting Angelique Goyena

David Wayne Hoshaw Jr. was reportedly romantically involved with at least six different women and had been married thrice prior to his meeting with Angelique “Angel” Elaine Goyena. When he was married to his first wife, Naomi, with whom he shared a couple of children, he served in the US Air Force. According to her, he had not only strangled her while she was pregnant, but he was also allegedly grooming a 12-year-old friend of the family. Right after the incident, Naomi complained about his domestic violent tendencies to the US Air Force, who ultimately discharged him but did not take any further action against him.

The couple divorced, but David followed his ex-wife, Naomi, and their children to Virginia, where he entered the world of online dating. Through an online dating website, he met Alison Ashcroft in 2001. However, by then, he had divorced his second wife, with whom he shared a short marriage stint. Eventually, he tied the knot with Alison, only to suddenly part ways from her in 2005. The following year, David, who was an electrical designer and a scout leader, crossed paths with Angelique Goyena. After building a romantic bond for six months, the two got engaged on December 18, 2006, with plans to get married in September 2007.

Police Gathered a Mountain of Circumstantial Evidence Against David Hoshaw

Unfortunately, in the early hours of June 30, 2007, a couple of months before Angelique’s dream wedding, David Hoshaw attacked the 35-year-old woman and her 74-year-old mother, Vonda Goyena, in the Goyena residence in the 8400 block of Friden Street in Norfolk, Virginia. Soon after the attack, the police arrived at the crime scene and found the daughter dead from multiple stab wounds. As for her mother, she was pronounced dead at the hospital later. Following the murders, the investigators questioned David, who told them that he was at a Boy Scouts weeklong campout with his 12-year-old son, about 80 miles away from the crime scene.

Despite having a concrete alibi, the detectives suspected him of being involved in the crime, given his dark past and an affair with a woman named Amanda Knuth. In order to keep the police off his back and distract them, he delivered a couple of letters to them as the killer but weaved a totally different narrative. Not long after the killings, David relocated to Michigan to move in with Amanda, with whom he got engaged too. In the following years, he became the prime suspect when the detectives found a link between him and the two letters by digging deep into his cell phone records and credit card receipts. The records placed him near the post offices on the dates when the letters were mailed.

Moreover, the investigators realized that it was not impossible for him to drive down to the Goyena household on the fateful night, commit the murders, and return to the campsite by the morning without raising any suspicions. Thus, in light of all the circumstantial evidence against him, the police managed to obtain an arrest warrant for him after the grand jury indicted him on murder charges. Finally, after two long years, 37-year-old David Hoshaw was arrested on June 18, 2009, at his mobile home in Menominee, Michigan, which he shared with Amanda, who was pregnant with their second child. He was charged with the second-degree murder of Angelique and her mother, Vonda, and held behind bars on a $500,000 bond.

After the arrest, David Wayne Hoshaw was interrogated by the detectives. The killer kept denying his involvement in the murders and writing the two letters mailed to the authorities. When he was allowed to speak to Amanda alone in the interrogation room, he confessed to his crimes. He claimed that he went to the Goyenas that night to break up with Angelique, but things took a turn for the worse, and “I got crazy,” he said. He even admitted to sending the letters to the police to get them off his back. Little did they know, the entire confession was recorded on a concealed camera.

On October 5, 2010, David pleaded guilty to capital murder and first-degree murder. In his statement, he apologized to the family of the deceased and stated, “For the sake of my family, I am pleading guilty to this crime.” That same day, the 38-year-old killer was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole. Currently, he is incarcerated at River North Correctional Center in Independence, Virginia.
