David Shannon Murder: Where Are Elizabeth and Joan Shannon Now?

When a soldier named David Shannon was found dead in his house in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in the summer of 2002, the entire community was left shaken to its core. As the detectives investigated the murder, they uncovered a web of dark secrets, full of sex and manipulation. Unexpected tips and witness statements allowed the authorities to apprehend the perpetrator/s within a few days of the tragedy. All the intricate details of the case and the investigation that ensued are covered in Investigation Discovery’s ‘Mother, May I Murder?: A Soldier’s Secrets,’ which also features insightful interviews with David’s loved ones and the officials linked to the case.

David Shannon Was Fatally Shot in His Sleep at His Fayetteville Home

Born on June 1, 1962, in Hallock, Minnesota, to James G. Shannon and Shirley Martineson, David Ray Shannon joined the Army in 1987 and stayed in the military, achieving the rank of Major. Owing to his successful military record, he was also assigned to the US Army Special Operations Command. At some point, he crossed paths with Joan, a single mother to a daughter named Elizabeth from a previous relationship, in Rochester, New York. After falling in love, they eventually tied the knot and made their relationship official in the eyes of the law. He also officially adopted her daughter, Elizabeth.

Throughout their marriage, the couple welcomed two sons. After being stationed in Minnesota for a while, David was transferred to Fort Bragg. Thus, he relocated to a house off-base on Galloway Drive in Fayetteville with his wife and kids. Meanwhile, Joan worked as a Loan receptionist at the Fort Bragg Credit Union. The Shannons’ lives turned upside down in the early hours of July 23, 2002. Around 3:07 am, the police received a frantic call from Joan, who told them that her husband had been shot while sleeping. When the authorities rushed to the scene of the crime, they noticed that the 40-year-old Major had been shot twice, once in his head and once in his chest, resulting in his demise. Although the detectives found no signs of forced entry, they discovered two rounds of a .9 mm handgun near the remains.

David Shannon’s Wife Was Involved in an Affair With Jeffrey Wilson

As part of the investigation, the authorities interviewed all the people present in the house at the time of David Shannon’s murder, including his wife, Joan Shannon, her daughter, Elizabeth, and Elizabeth’s friend, Vera. Joan told the police that she awoke to the sound of gunshots around 3 am and saw the killer flee the scene through the hallway. Both Elizabeth and Vera claimed that they didn’t witness anything as they were sleeping in the former’s bedroom while loud music was playing. During their search for evidence, the detectives found some pornographic materials in the master bedroom, which they alleged indicated that David and Joan were involved in sexual activity with other couples. As per the show, when they confronted Joan with the pornographic videos, she reportedly divulged that they were swingers.

Joan Shannon and Jeffrey Wilson

Joan reportedly told investigators about falling in love with another man named Jeffrey Wilson, who was married and a father to four children. Upon interviewing him, the investigators learned that he was a member of a swinging group called the Fayetteville Gang Bangers, through which he met Joan. According to investigators, he admitted to having an affair with her while keeping their respective partners in the dark. As they dug deeper into the affair, they learned that merely five days before the fateful night, David had allegedly found out about the affair and told Joan not to see him anymore. Moreover, Jeffrey reportedly chatted with David online just a couple of hours before the murder. However, the detectives couldn’t confirm their suspicions as he had a solid alibi. He claimed to be working a night shift at Womack Army Medical Hospital, which was verified.

David Shannon’s Killers Were Taken Into Custody Within a Few Days of the Murder

Although Joan was quite cooperative with the authorities initially, her attitude changed in the days that followed. Soon, they were contacted by Vera’s mother, who told them that she had heard about Joan wanting her husband dead. Thus, the investigators brought Vera in for questioning again. This time, she told them that Elizabeth killed David. Vera claimed that the two had practiced shooting together at a construction site with the murder weapon just a couple of days before the killing. Within a week of the incident, both Joan Shannon and her daughter, Elizabeth, were charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Joan and Elizabeth Shannon

Joan Shannon was staying at a Fort Bragg-based bed and breakfast place called the Fisher House when she was taken into custody. On the other hand, on August 2, 2002, they located Elizabeth at a trailer, where she was arrested. Upon being questioned, Elizabeth alleged that her mother, Joan, orchestrated the murder of David Shannon. She told them that Joan wanted him dead so as to receive the life insurance money and start a fresh life with Jeffrey. Elizabeth claimed that she didn’t agree to commit murder at first and that she was pressured into doing it. However, Joan maintained her innocence and managed to make bail soon after.

Elizabeth and Joan Are Serving Their Sentences at Separate North Carolina Prisons

Elizabeth Shannon

Less than a couple of years later, on June 7, 2004, Elizabeth Shannon pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and second-degree murder, avoiding a potential life sentence. In exchange, she also agreed to testify against her mother during her trial. She was sentenced to not less than 25 years and not more than 31 and a half years in prison for her involvement in the murder of her stepfather, David Shannon. More than two years later, on August 15, 2005, Joan’s trial began. As per her plea deal, Elizabeth took the stand and testified against her mother. However, the defense argued that Elizabeth had a history of violence as she was allegedly involved with gangs and was solely responsible for David’s murder.

Joan Shannon

The prosecution emphasized Joan’s affair with Jeffrey and implied that her motive was to collect the insurance money after her husband’s death and run away with her lover. In the end, the jury found Joan guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and sentenced her to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As of today, 58-year-old Joan is serving her sentence at Anson Correctional Institution in Polkton, North Carolina, while 38-year-old Elizabeth is incarcerated at North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh, North Carolina. The latter’s parole eligibility date is scheduled for November 2027.
