Lifetime’s ‘Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story’ is inspired by the real-life case of Lisa Stasi and her murder at the hands of John Robinson. After taking Lisa’s 4-month-old daughter, Tiffany Lynn Stasi (later renamed Heather Tiffany Robinson), John created forged adoption documents and arranged for his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Frieda Robinson, to raise her as their own. The film closely follows these events, and while its focus remains on Heather and the Robinsons, it also briefly introduces the character of Dean Stasi, Heather’s biological father. Although his appearance is limited, it opens the door to deeper questions about Dean’s real-life role and his reaction when the truth surfaced in 2000.
The Real-Life Carl Stasi Has Inspired Dean Stasi’s Character
In ‘Kidnapped by a Killer: The Heather Robinson Story,’ Heather’s biological father is portrayed under the fictional name Dean Stasi. However, in reality, her father is Carl Stasi, a man who has largely remained out of the public spotlight. Carl met Lisa Elledge, a young woman from Alabama, in 1983. He was instantly drawn to her and later recalled that he thought she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Their romance quickly blossomed, and by August 1984, the couple tied the knot in Huntsville, Alabama. Just a few weeks later, on September 2, 1984, their daughter Tiffany Lynn Stasi was born. Hoping to build a better life for their new family, the newlyweds made the decision to relocate to Kansas City, Missouri.
Carl had served in the US military, and by late 1984, growing tensions and conflicts between him and Lisa began to take a toll on their young marriage. In December of that year, the couple decided to separate. Carl re-enlisted in the military and relocated to Illinois to resume his service, while Lisa moved into a shelter for women in Kansas City, Missouri. By January 1985, Carl was on active duty, unaware that his family’s life was about to be irreversibly shattered. Unbeknownst to him, Lisa had come into contact with a man named John Robinson under the guise of receiving support for single mothers. In early January 1985, Lisa was murdered by Robinson. Their 4-month-old daughter, Tiffany, was taken by him and handed over to his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Frieda Robinson, under falsified adoption documents. She was renamed Heather Tiffany Robinson. For Carl, it was as if both his wife and daughter had vanished without a trace.
Carl Stasi Wanted to be a Part of Heather Robinson’s Life
It wasn’t until the year 2000, when the FBI conducted DNA testing as part of its investigation into John Edward Robinson, that Carl Stasi learned that his daughter was alive and had been raised under the name Heather Tiffany Robinson. As the full scope of the story came to light, Carl publicly expressed his deep sorrow and his desire to reconnect with his biological daughter. In a public interview that year, he shared that, had he known she was alive, he would have done everything in his power to be a part of her life. He believed he had a right to be in her world and hoped for a chance to build a relationship.
However, at the time, Heather chose not to pursue a connection with Carl. She stated that she already had a father in Don Robinson. In the aftermath, Carl took legal action. He filed a civil suit against Truman Medical Center in Kansas City and a social worker named Karen Gaddis, alleging negligence for releasing confidential information about Lisa Stasi to John Robinson, a man with a dangerous history. The defendants moved to have the case dismissed, and in 2010, Carl filed an appeal against that dismissal. Since then, public details about the progress or outcome of the case have been limited.
According to reports, Carl had remarried and continued to live in Missouri, though he has largely remained out of the public eye. He made a rare appearance in 2018 when the organization Cars 4 Heroes recognized him as a retired veteran and gifted him a car, as he had reportedly been without one since 2011. During the event, he briefly reflected on the hardships he had endured. At the same time, little has been publicly shared about his life since there is hope that he has found a sense of peace and stability in recent years. It has been reported that Heather made efforts to reach out to him, but whether the two were ever able to reconnect remains unclear.
