Delicious: What Happens to Amber? Is She Dead?

In Netflix’s ‘Delicious,’ an idyllic holiday in the south of France turns into a nightmare for a family after they invite a strange girl into their home. The focus is on a German couple, John and Esther, and their two children, Philipp and Alba. Despite being on vacation, Esther remains occupied with her job and is constantly on call with her partner. Meanwhile, her husband is going through a difficult time in his career, which he reveals to her much later. Esther feels alienated from her family and finds a confidant in Teodora, whom she hires as a maid. With the girl and her group, Esther finds her spark again, but she is not the only one to join them. A woman named Amber also joins them after one night of partying, but the next morning, there is no trace of her. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Amber’s Disappearance Serves as the Prologue for Esther’s Tragic Fate

Esther meets Amber when she and Teodora go for a night out. When Esther talks about wanting to be a bit freer and have some fun, the young maid takes her to a disco, where they drink and dance the night away. Before she is seduced by Lucien, Esther meets Amber, who is also a tourist and has become a part of the group. They don’t get to chat much, but as night gives way to dawn, the entire group goes to the beach to have a swim. While Esther is hesitant to go in the water due to her fear of the ocean, Amber runs into it with enthusiasm and enjoys it. Esther’s attention is taken over by Lucien, who invites her to join him, going into the ocean at a slow pace so that she can swim without any fear. From here, she forgets about everything and is simply focused on enjoying the moment with Lucien, to whom she is very attracted.

Meanwhile, Amber, who had also been enjoying her swim, is pulled into the water by an unseen force. Later, when the whole group gathers by the fire to have breakfast, Esther asks about Amber, and Teodora says that she is gone. What Esther doesn’t know is that Amber was drowned and killed by the group while she was busy romancing Lucien. He kept her occupied while the group took Amber out of the water and cut her up into pieces, which they later roasted over the fire and ate for breakfast. The same meat is offered to Esther, who consumes it without any idea of what it is. By this time, she has no idea what Teodora, Lucien, and the group really are, and she enjoys the breakfast.

It isn’t until a couple of days after Esther leaves her family behind to have some days of freedom for herself that the truth is revealed to her. Having spent some time riding around with Lucien and his group, she starts to get weird vibes from them. Her suspicions are confirmed when she finds another tourist being eaten by one of the girls in the group, and soon after, Esther herself becomes a meal. Considering how fast all this happens, perhaps she doesn’t even get a chance to put two and two together and realize that Amber was also killed and eaten by them. However, the confirmation of the group being cannibals puts the entire thing in perspective, showing the audience that the ground had been laid for Esther’s doom right in front of her eyes, but she was too ignorant to see it.
