Delvin Mitchell Murder: Where is Justin Brewer Now?

When 25-year-old Delvin De’vontae Mitchell was found dead on the 2300 block of Frisse Avenue in Evansville, Indiana, on January 25, 2019, the entire community was left shaken. That’s because it appeared as if he had been heinously killed in the middle of the street for no rhyme or reason, as explored in Investigation Discovery’s ‘The Murder Tapes: The Tipster.’ Thankfully, based on a crucial tip, extensive investigations, and the recovery of the murder weapon from a creek, officials were soon able to bring the case to a satisfactory close.

Delvin Mitchell Was Fatally Shot Inside His Vehicle

Born on December 27, 1993, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Kenya Bryant and Don Mitchell, Delvin De’vontae Mitchell reportedly grew up in a home full of care, laughter, and support. He hails from a large family of 10 siblings, so he was almost always surrounded by unconditional love that shaped him into an individual with a kind soul and a pure heart. He brightened every room he walked into, expressed his feelings of compassion unapologetically, and touched a lot of hearts with his authentic generosity.

It was completely heartbreaking for Delvin’s loved ones when they heard the news of his homicide, especially as there initially seemed to be no motive behind it. Officials had responded to reports of multiple gunshots ringing out in the 2300 block of Frisse Avenue in Evansville, Indiana, around midnight on January 25, 2019. At the scene, they found the 25-year-old in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. They soon declared that he died from multiple gunshots, including twice to the head. He is survived by his parents, his twin sister LaDonna, his siblings Antoine, Cynthia, Crystal, Don Jr., Jasmine, Kelly, Nigel, Salena, and Treshun, as well as his loving long-time girlfriend/wife, Mariah Esters.

Delvin Mitchell’s Assailants Were Arrested in Georgia

The moment first responders arrived at the scene, they were able to ascertain that Delvin’s murder was not the result of a drive-by shooting, as there was no damage to the outside of his car. The fact that several shell casings were recovered from the passenger side further backed this hypothesis, but there were no signs of the weapon anywhere nearby. What followed was extensive inquiries into the victim’s personal life, people he had recently been in contact with, and his loved ones to ensure no stone was left unturned. Investigators even canvassed the area, which ultimately led to a dive team recovering parts of the gun believed to be used in the killing from Pigeon Creek, which runs through the city.

Amber Brewer

A married couple was subsequently named suspects, resulting in local police joining hands with state officials as well as the FBI because they had fled out of state not long after the incident. Amber and Justin Brewer were tracked down to Atlanta, Georgia, where they were taken into custody on February 19, 2019, before being extradited back to Evansville for a preliminary hearing. The initial charges against them both were federal, with her being accused of providing a firearm to a convicted felon and him being accused of having a weapon in his possession as a felon.

Amber and Justin were charged with one count each of murder later on, with it coming to light that the latter had pulled a gun on the 25-year-old and shot him while making an active drug deal. According to records, she was the one who took her husband to meet Delvin to buy marijuana, and was right there in the car under the impression they were just going to do the transaction. She thus reportedly fled the moment she saw her husband point a gun at the youngster, running to the cab she had driven them in as the gunshots rang out, and Justin rushed to join her.

Justin Brewer is Currently Serving a Lengthy Term in State Prison

As per court records, Amber and Justin left the scene together, following which she disposed of the gun parts in Pigeon Creek before they decided to flee Indiana altogether. Officials believe they chose to do so not only to avoid prosecution but also because the triggerman was a habitual offender, meaning he could be sentenced to a longer term if arrested and deemed a threat to society. It was around a year later, in early 2020, that they faced justice for the first time, with both of them pleading guilty to the weapon-providing/possession federal charges against them.

While Amber was consequently sentenced to time served, she remained in custody owing to the pending state charge of murder. On the other hand, Justin was handed down 37 months in prison for his plea to the two counts of gun possession as a prohibited person. Later on, his wife ended up signing an immunity agreement with the state in exchange for testifying against him with brutal honesty. There was a “serious risk” that she would “obstruct or attempt to obstruct justice” to protect her partner, but that did not happen, as per records.

When Justin stood trial in 2021, prosecutors did present Amber as a star witness, along with evidence from cell phone records placing him near the scene of the murder. Therefore, following five days of testimonies, he was found guilty, for which he was sentenced to 85 years in prison: 60 for murder, 13 for the firearm enhancement, and 12 for the habitual offender enhancement. So, today, at the age of 38, he is incarcerated at the maximum-security Pendleton Correctional Facility in Madison County, Indiana, where he is expected to remain until at least he becomes eligible for parole on November 13, 2083.
