Does Enzo Die in Devil May Cry, Explained

The Netflix fantasy animated show ‘Devil May Cry’ creates an engaging world with an entertaining array of characters. The story primarily revolves around Dante, a demon hunter, who might just hold the key to preventing an apocalypse looming on the horizon. Naturally, his exceptional pedigree makes him the prime target of White Rabbit, a being from Hell who wishes to dissolve the barrier between his realm and Earth. For the same reason, Dante comes onto the radar of DarkCom, a private interdimensional security organization that is prepared to put up a fight of a lifetime to foil the Rabbit’s plans. In order to locate the elusive hunter, the organization equips the help of his close friend, Enzo Ferino, a middleman who brokers deals between benefactors and demon hunters. Subsequently, as the man inadvertently becomes a part of Dante’s misadventures, his life remains surrounded by precarious danger all the time. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Enzo Sacrifices Himself For Dante

Enzo’s introduction to the story establishes a connection between DarkCom and Dante. The organization is trying to find the identity of a hunter whom the White Rabbit is targeting to move forward with his grand scheme of opening the Gates of Hell. After interrogating a long line of hunters, they finally hit the jackpot with Enzo. He’s a broker of deals between hunters for hire and their clients. As such, he has managed to establish a long-standing friendship with Dante. However, given his shady line of work, the man isn’t exactly above setting up his friends to make a quick buck and get out of any mortal trouble with demonic beings. Or authoritative organizations that wish to use him as bait to trap Dante.

Thus, Enzo ends up leading DarkCom and its Lieutenant, Mary Arkham, right to Dante’s doorstep. Still, once there, he is at least honest about his betrayal. As such, the rest of his dynamic with the demon hunter is established. Enzo may be untrustworthy, but at least Dante can always rely on him to be unreliable. In the overwhelming, near-fatal incidents that follow the apparent son of Sparda, the skeezy broker remains a reluctant but consistent support by his side. He offers his poor but efficient advice and moral support to the other man, helping him cope with all the abrupt changes in his life—which turns out to include a bloodthirsty Rabbit-man out for his blood.

Eventually, when Dante and Mary arrive at a final showdown against a super-powered Rabbit, Enzo is unfortunate enough to be right there with them. Still, he has the good sense to run and hide before the fight truly begins. However, he can only stay hidden for so long before he’s unable to overlook things as the battle rapidly unfolds in Rabbit’s favor. Previously, he had told Dante that, if not a bullet, he would at least take a blade for him. Therefore, as the hunter’s enemy charges toward him while he is in a helpless state, the broker puts himself in the path of his friend’s demise. Ultimately, the weapon Enzo had brandished against Rabbit is useless since the latter’s blade pierces his human body much more quickly. As such, Enzo dies, having laid down his life for Dante. Yet, his sacrifice doesn’t go in vain, as it fuels the hunter’s rage and helps him defeat the wannabe harbinger of Hell.
