Dezra Chambers: Where is Alison Chambers’ Sister Now?

In 1979, Dezra Chambers grew worried when she suddenly stopped hearing from her sister, Alison Chambers. Although the former was still very young at the time, many assumed Alison had simply run away. However, in 1994, during the police excavation at Fred and Rose West’s home on Cromwell Street, Alison’s remains were discovered, confirming the worst. The revelation was devastating for Dezra, who struggled to process the horrific truth. In Netflix’s ‘Fred and Rose West: A British Horror Story,’ she opened up about the heartbreak of losing her sister, the emotional aftermath, and how Alison continues to be a lasting presence in her life and memories.

Dezra Chambers Went to Visit Fred and Rose West’s House After Their Arrest

Dezra Chambers and her older sister Alison spent their early childhood in Hanover, West Germany, where their father was stationed with the RAF. Although their family was originally from Warrington, England, frequent relocations were a part of their life. Eventually, they settled in Swansea, Wales. Dezra remembered Alison as a lively and spirited girl who often found herself in hot water. Branded a “troubled teenager,” Alison was eventually placed in a children’s home in Gloucester. Despite the separation, she kept in regular contact with her family through letters and even told them that she had run away from there.

Alison eventually found shelter at 25 Cromwell Street, the home of Fred and Rose West, and even mentioned it in letters to her family. Dezra recalled that, at the time, reading those letters brought a sense of comfort as her sister seemed to have found a caring environment, almost like a second family. But everything changed in August 1979, when all communication from Alison abruptly stopped. Although their parents did report her missing, the prevailing assumption was that 16-year-old Alison had chosen to run away again. It wasn’t until February 1994, when news reports detailed the grisly discoveries being unearthed at the Wests’ Gloucester home, that Dezra’s fears resurfaced. She immediately thought of her sister.

Days later, those fears were confirmed when police contacted the family to say that one of the sets of remains found at the property belonged to Alison. Dezra shared that it took immense courage to visit the house where her sister had spent her final moments. Standing at the site, trying to grasp the reality of what had happened, she said it still didn’t fully make sense. But when officers told her that Alison’s remains had been found in the garden, Dezra felt an unexpected sense of relief because she felt that in some way her sister had been laid to rest. She attended Rose West’s trial and said that seeing her convicted offered some measure of peace. Though nothing could ever bring Alison back, and the horror of her violent death is a wound that will never fully heal, Dezra believes her sister’s story matters and deserves to be heard.
