Don’t Trust the Couple Upstairs Plot Synopsis

Joe and Maria are a newly married couple who move into the house on Archford Farm, located in an isolated spot with greenery and quiet. To fix the nearly dilapidated house and run the farm, they seek another couple to move in as tenants and help them out. Phil, the owner of a neighboring farmhouse, offers to buy Joe and Maria’s property, but they refuse. After they post an ad on social media inviting tenants, they are soon met by Vicki and Clay, an unmarried couple. Vicki and Clay claim that they are very interested in renovating the house and helping with the farming. Soon, Joe and Maria accept Vicki and Clay as their new tenants.

The first few days go peacefully as both couples spend quality time together, restoring the property to some semblance of normalcy. However, the situation takes a turn when Maria sees Vicki openly flirting with Joe. Maria starts to doubt Joe as well and notices that Clay doesn’t really show any affection towards Vicki. A few days later, when Maria walks to the nearby lakeside, she finds Vicki dead in the lake. The cops, led by Detective Reed, arrive soon and start preliminary investigations into the sudden death. Given that Joe and Maria are the property owners, Reed questions them and says she will solve the case soon.

Forensic reports confirm that Vicki’s death was a murder and not suicide. The situation gets more complicated when Clay moves out of the house without informing anyone. Soon, Clay becomes the prime suspect in Vicki’s murder, even as his intentions remain unclear. In the coming days, Maria feels that someone is stalking her, which worries her. She seeks emotional support from her best friends Brooke and Amber, who assure her that everything will be okay. But Maria then begins to suspect that Joe might be hiding something, which turns everything upside down.

Don’t Trust the Couple Upstairs Ending: Who Killed Vicki? Why?

Multiple suspects emerge after Vicki drowns in the lake, causing Maria to obsessively pursue every lead. The prime suspect is Clay, who is revealed to be a robber on the run from the law. Maria learns that he made a deal with Vicki to shift to the house in Archford Farm so that he can temporarily use it as a hiding spot and later escape. For some strange reasons, Vicki is in on the deal, despite not really being well acquainted with Clay. Maria also views Joe with suspicion, especially after she gets photographs through the mail, which show Joe and Vicki posing romantically in the past. Maria presses Joe for answers, and he denies knowing Vicki beforehand and claims the pictures are fake. With Clay still untraceable, Maria uses the chat section of a chess app to connect with him.

After Joe goes missing, Maria’s worries worsen, and she assumes the worst. She asks Clay to give her Joe’s whereabouts, but he says he needs access to the key he accidentally dropped at the house in Archford Farm. While examining the pictures closely, Maria spots a coffee shop in the background and visits the place with her friends Brooke and Amber. Further leads take them to an art gallery where the manager looks at Vicki’s photographs and confirms that her real name is Emma Spear, and that she is a painter. This makes Vicki’s death and Joe’s disappearance more complicated. When Maria is alone at home, Clay sneaks up on her and attacks her, demanding she hand over the key. He reveals that Vicki just wanted to help him out and didn’t have any other intentions.

The key opens a safe that contains all the cash and jewelry that Clay has stolen, and he needs it desperately to start a new life. When Maria refuses to hand over the key immediately, he attempts to strangle her. However, when he hears cop sirens, he tries to run, only to be apprehended soon after. With Joe still missing and Vicki’s death still unsolved, Maria spots an important clue at the opportune moment. She sees that Vicki signs her sketches with the initials “ES” and remembers that Brooke’s house also has a portrait with the same initials. Maria starts to believe that Brooke definitely knew Vicki and is mostly hiding something.

Maria also knows that Joe used to date Brooke in the past, before marrying Maria. When Maria goes to Brooke’s house and confronts her, she confesses everything. Brooke divulges that she couldn’t get over Joe, despite her best efforts. Seeing Joe marry Maria made Brooke obsess more about him, driving her to break the marriage apart. Brooke reveals she got acquainted with Vicki and convinced her to move into the house at Archford Farm to eventually seduce Joe so that his marriage would fail. However, Joe remains loyal to Maria, which makes Brooke angrier and more frustrated. Brooke meets Vicki by the isolated lake next to Archford Farm and tells her to try harder to achieve the objective. However, Vicki says that Joe and Maria are truly happy and loyal to each other, and that she doesn’t want to break them up.

In a fit of rage, Brooke pushes Vicki to the lake, causing her to hit a rock and drown to death. Brooke runs away from the spot, leaving no other clues behind. Talking to Maria, Brooke then discloses that she was the one who developed the fake photographs and sent them to Maria. However, Joe finds out that Brooke is the one behind the fake photographs and confronts her. This leads to Vicki striking Joe on the head with a wine bottle, incapacitating him, and holding him hostage. Thus, Brooke’s obsession with Joe and her relentless desire to be his girlfriend cause her to kill Vicki and subsequently hold him against his will at her own house.

Is Joe Dead or Alive? What Happens to Brooke?

After Brooke reveals the truth, Maria is shocked beyond belief to learn that one of her best friends has done this to her. The tension between Maria and Brooke intensifies when the former demands to see Joe. What follows is a physical confrontation in which Maria temporarily overpowers Brooke and runs upstairs to the bedroom where Joe is tied up. Maria soon frees him and rushes him downstairs, hoping to escape as soon as possible. However, Maria and Joe are taken aback when they see Brooke waiting for them downstairs with a gun in her hand. Maria begs Brooke to let them go, but Brooke shows no remorse. As Maria and Joe turn around to run towards the door, Brooke shoots Joe, seriously injuring him. Just as she is about to pull the trigger again and take Joe’s life, Brooke hesitates.

Seeing Joe and Maria in such a helpless situation makes Brooke reconsider, and she draws the gun back. Soon, she hears cop sirens, and the screen cuts to black. The movie doesn’t explicitly reveal whether or not Brooke is punished for her crimes. It is highly likely that the cops will immediately take her into custody and later try her in court. With the evidence that Maria has, Brooke’s role in Vicki’s murder could easily be exposed and proven. Ultimately, it is more likely than not that Brooke will spend the majority of her remaining life behind bars.

Does Clay Face Legal Consequences? Do Joe and Maria Become Parents?

Clay is immediately arrested by the cops when he tries to run away from the house at Archford Farm. His fate remains uncertain beyond this point in the story. It is highly likely that his role in the robberies and the assault on Maria will be proven in court. Since he is caught while trying to escape, circumstantial evidence will also be against him. Thus, Clay may serve a sentence on proven charges of robbery and assault, but be acquitted on any charges related to the murder of Vicki.

Six months after surviving Brooke’s attack, Joe and Maria are living happily in the house at Archford Farm. Despite everything that they have gone through, they still find strength in each other’s company. While Joe is painting the walls, Maria pleasantly surprises him by revealing she is pregnant, and he passionately kisses her. Joe and Maria will likely become parents in a few months and spend the rest of their lives happily and in peace.
