Is Dora the Dog Dead? Does Diego the Dog Survive?

‘Becky’ centers on the titular teenager as she grapples with the loss of her mother, which has strained her relationship with her father, Jeff. This emotional distance intensifies when they visit a lake house, and Jeff introduces his new girlfriend, Kayla, and her son, Ty. Still haunted by her mother’s memory, Becky is overwhelmed by this unexpected new reality. The situation spirals drastically when a group of Neo-Nazi prison escapees lays violent siege to the house. As the criminals, who are after a specific item within the home, threaten her family, Becky is forced to fight back. In the story, Becky has two dogs, named Dora and Diego, who play an important role in the story. Their actions have significant consequences for the characters’ fates. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Dora Becomes the First Victim of the Unfolding Chaos

Becky shares a close bond with both her dogs, Diego, a male, and Dora, a female. While Diego prefers to be more active, Dora is more comfortable with peace. Dora’s presence makes it easier for Becky to handle her sadness. Dora takes an instant liking to Ty, Kayla’s son. Ty also feels the connection and feeds Dora at a later stage. Her ability to connect with people makes Dora a special character in the film. She doesn’t accompany Becky and Diego to the woods, leaving her without proper help when the Neo-Nazis arrive. Dominick reveals that Dora is of the Cane Corso breed, and also makes a remark about the black color of her skin. When Apex tells Kayla and Ty to escape, they run out of the house, and Dora follows them.

However, Cole and Hammond catch up to the mother and son as they run through the woods. As Cole threatens them with a gun, Dora comes running towards them, which becomes her most tragic decision. As Dora comes running, Cole gets agitated and brutally shoots her to death. Dora never wanted to hurt anyone and was simply following her new friends. But she dies at the hands of a merciless criminal who doesn’t value her life. Thus, Dora becomes the first victim of the Neo-Nazi group’s aggression.

Diego is a Brave and Loyal Companion to Becky

Unlike Dora, Diego is a more aggressive and often ruthless companion to Becky. He goes with her to the cabin in the woods, where he plays a major role in protecting her. Cole is not able to enter the cabin because of Diego’s presence. Diego also keeps others at bay as Becky comes up with ways to survive. Becky promises Diego that the attackers will not escape. Later in the story, Diego faces his most significant threat yet. He happens to go out of the cabin when Becky doesn’t return for a long time. Apex notices Becky and sees Diego running toward her. He strikes Diego with a single punch. As Becky rushes to Diego, Apex overpowers her. He then expresses regret for his harshness, mentioning that he had previously harmed children.

Telling Becky to escape, he also states his desire to be no longer controlled by Dominick. Becky reunites with Diego, hugging him in relief that he is safe. Diego almost tastes death due to the big man’s punch, but is lucky enough to survive. He recovers rather quickly and continues to accompany Becky loyally. Diego plays a role in Dominick’s defeat. He walks towards the car to find Becky, but he is greeted by Diego instead, who bites him. Diego is able to strike from within the car. Later, after Becky eliminates all the Neo-Nazis, Diego is liberated by Kayla, who opens the car’s door. Ultimately, Diego reunites with Becky and will continue to be her friend.
