In 1993, Edwin Kaprat committed multiple crimes in Florida, including homicides and arson. Also known as the Granny Killer, he was once a family man with two sons before he went on a killing spree between August and September 1993. The episode titled ‘The Granny Killer’ of Investigation Discovery’s ‘Evil Lives Here’ delves deep into the killings he was involved in and how the detectives apprehended him before bringing him to justice.
Edwin Kaprat Got Divorced Due to His Alleged Volatile Behavior Towards His Family
Born on September 21, 1964, in New York City, New York, to Edwin “Skip” Kaprat Jr. and Ruth, Edwin Bernard Kaprat III was raised in Independence Township, New Jersey, where he moved with his parents and a sibling. As per reports, he began drinking alcohol at the tender age of 12, leading to an addiction and admission into juvenile treatment centers. He attended Hackettstown High School, from which he dropped out at 16. Over the next two years, he began dating Nora Niederhaus and married her in November 1982, while she was pregnant with his child. Over the years, the couple welcomed two sons. However, the show mentioned he allegedly continued drinking and smoking marijuana.
By October 1990, Edwin and Nora relocated to Spring Hills, Florida, where they settled into his parents’ home. A few months later, in early March 1991, Edwin was linked to the homicide of 27-year-old Lee Anthony Bugay III, whose remains were found in a mangrove in Tampa, Florida, on February 22, 1991. After the detectives obtained an arrest warrant for him, he reached out to the Hackettstown Police Department and turned himself in on March 9. He was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and forgery. During his trial, Edwin’s confession was found insufficient to convict him of the killing. Thus, he was found guilty of the other charges, including forgery and armed robbery. As a result, he was initially placed under house arrest but incarcerated for violating it until May 7, 1993.
Around the same time, he allegedly exhibited violent and aggressive behavior towards his wife and children, leading to Nora divorcing him. He also eventually dropped out of Hillsborough Community College. After he was released from prison, he made several allegations against his eldest son, claiming that he had tried to kill his other son and had sexually abused his ex-wife, Nora. Soon, Edwin landed a job at the Padgett-Swann Machinery Company, where he worked as a machinist. Between August and September 1993, multiple fire-related homicides took place in Hernando County, including that of 80-year-old Sophia Francis Garrity, 70-year-old Ruth Goldsmith, 79-year-old Lydia Riddell, and 87-year-old Lorraine “Alice” Burnham Dawe.
Edwin Kaprat Confessed to His Involvement in Multiple Killings
When an anonymous tipster suggested that the detectives look into Edwin Kaprat, they surprisingly found his fingerprints in the garage of Lorraine Dawe, who lived close to Edwin’s sister. Due to a lack of evidence, the authorities put him under 24-hour surveillance to connect him to the crimes. With the help of an undercover officer, they gathered sufficient evidence against him and obtained an arrest warrant and search warrants in October 1993. On October 8, he was taken into custody. The following day, Edwin reportedly confessed to raping and killing multiple elderly women.
He told the investigators that he had killed Lorraine after raping her because he thought she had had a heart attack. The killer also admitted to setting fire to his victims’ homes in order to get rid of the evidence. Thus, Edwin was charged with four counts of murder, four counts of sexual battery, six counts of residential burglary involving battery, two counts of attempted murder, five counts of arson, and one count of robbery. Later, in November 1993, he was also charged with the first-degree murder of William Whitney, who died from pneumonia caused by the attack allegedly committed by Edwin.
Edwin Kaprat Passed Away While on Death Row at a Florida Prison Facility
More than a year later, in January 1995, Edwin Kaprat’s homicide trial in connection with Lydia Riddell commenced. The prosecution presented a series of evidence against the defendant, including the tape-recorded interview where he confessed to his crimes. On the other hand, the defense argued that the detectives coerced him into making the confession, referring to the parts where the detectives shouted at him repeatedly and called him a liar. After ten days of testimonies and witness statements, the jury deliberated for about eight hours and found Edwin Kaprat guilty of Lydia’s murder. He was sentenced to death for his crime.
Soon, he also stood trial for the killing of Lorraine Dawe, for which he was convicted too. Again, he received a death sentence for his involvement in the crime. A few months later, while he was on death row at the Florida State Prison in Raiford, Florida, he was stabbed to death by two fellow inmates, alongside another inmate named Charles Street, on April 19, 1995. Consequently, his remaining charges in other homicides were reportedly dropped by the prosecution and officially closed.

Following the divorce, she started a separate life with her two sons and realized that she was lucky that she and her children came out of the marriage alive. Decades after the ordeal, Nora’s sons have grown up and lead independent lives. Being an animal lover, she surrounds herself with several of them, including dogs and roosters.
